Tried to call them many times

      Promo code checks out lol

If it’s not because i can’t be bothered rest my modem and re-enter password for numerous devices, I would have changed mate NBN to something else.

For those who consider, please don’t bother…they are slow during peak hour (not particularly quick off peak) and for some odd reason, as soon as it’s raining cats and dogs outside, the internet stopped working (twice already!!)

    • Nice to hear I am was not alone :)

    • I just keep configuring my wifi to use the same SSID each time and had been an NBN slut haha

So really the only change you need is the NBN username and password.

      • +3

lol yes, you didn't really create new SSIDs every time did you?

        • +1

          LOL

        • +1

          Thats the point…

Im using the same SSID since my pre-nbn days so i "dont have to re-enter my passwords on all my devices"

I recently upgraded my router as well and just use the same SSIDs too

    No esim support

Their nbn is the worst I've ever experienced. Was with them for a month then recently churned over the weekend.

They have outages at least weekly, and their speeds are half of what you pay for.
For $1 it's not even worth the hassle.

    • +3

Yep I've had over 10 providers and Mate is by far the worst by such a huge margin its ridiculous. Even the other bad ISPs had some redeeming qualities. Mate did everything wrong. Technically abysmal with too many issues to list. They even charged me without sending bills and then when I left kept sending me bills for $0.

Damn, already signed up with exetels offer

    • +1

Exetel substantially better than this mob.

    • +1

You'll love exetel compared to mate.
      Well worth the money

  • +4

Add mine to the list of poor experiences with them

Pretty rubbish provider. Terrible customer service, slow speeds. Last time I had to escalate to the TIO to get them to apply the coupon they promised.

Not worth the effort. I would stay far away.

    Comments from previous deal here:

  • After theirvso called " upgrade" few months back it turned so bad .
Dropouts during teams meetings and calls became regular.
They went into a halt mode during upgrade.
    Customer servie gone down hill
However never had any issues with mobile service as telstra reseller (not sure about past 4 months)

Will add another voice to confirm they slow down NBN connection considerably during peak hours that it becomes infuriating. Switched to ABB and haven't had any throttling issues whatsoever. Still using same modem/route that Mate provided too.

  • +1

The good: I Initially sign up to the $1 for 3 months deal but forget to apply the code. at that incident they were quite good and quick to cancel my order.

The bad: Try that again a few weeks later. The time got it done correctly and I an actually using that connection now to post this. The speed is terrible. Its partly Telstra's fault as they refuse to put a station on the tower right at the back of our block. Everything else is at least 3KM away. However I has use Boost and Telstra before and they are no way as bad. During the day WFH with this connection is almost impossible and I have to switch back to my Vodafone connection.

I may cancel after this month to say myself $2 🤣🤣

  • +1

Is it really '1 month $1' for mobile when they start billing you on the order date… Thought that was a bit of a jip

Mate used to be amazing but dropped right off a year or two ago. Peak speeds were abysmal (sometimes 15mbps on 100 plan).

The only troubleshooting they did was make me run speedtest.net three times and tell me it was my hardware.

Speedtest.net is dodgy as hell. They tailor their results to give better scores than what you are actually receiving. They were reporting 100mbps when every single other speed test service was reporting 15-20mbps.

I am guessing they knew this because they would not accept any other speed test data from any other site. They insisted my hardware was to blame.

Switched to superloop and my problems vanished immediately. Have not looked back.

    • +3

It could be Mate prioritising speedtest.net data so it doesn't make them look bad.

I was with Mate & thought they were ok until I read some information from other OzBargainers…

Double checked the information & it was all correct…

They informed me the best plan was the 100/40 & to use speedtest.net which I did & it regularly showed around the 100 download… Once I read the information here & tried different speed tests the max I was getting was low 50's… tried speedtest.net again showing almost 100mb download again…

Rang Aussie broadband & they informed me the fastest I could get through my line (FTTN) was around 50mb so I churned over to them…

Will never use mate again after the tactics they used just to get a few extra $$$ … Grrrrrrr

  • +3

Worst NBN ISP I've ever been with. Anything that is non CDN traffic e.g. Everything except YouTube, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Steam, Netflix etc was heavily throttled.

I was getting close to line speed to above popular services, close to 100Mbps, for everything else it was barely 2-3Mbps.

  • Another vote for Mate's $hitty speed and service

  • +1

Lmao i thought everybody was calling eachother "mate" in the comments and was thinking…. maybe they're calling them that to reply to someone's comment. Until i read the title and saw mate lmao!!
    Geez i'm blonde

  • anyone know if the Telstra smart modem works with mate?

    • +3

DON'T!!!! Mate is the worst ISP in Australia. From the slowest average speeds to actually having no speeds during the evening. Constant dropouts and poor customer service, if you can get through… Yes Telstra modem does work but why would you? Why? Please tell me why

    • It does, and it's PPPoE, so you need to enter username and password. I know everyone are mad at Mate, but when I used them they were fine. This is a new promo, so I will consider using them again once my current freebie from iiNet ends.

  • +2

I'm with Mate at the moment from their $20 of per month promo. Speed is fine on the Werribee exchange at least. Had some trouble getting set up, and after giving up on support (they didn't call back) I eventually figured it out. So if anyone else has trouble (I'm using an Asus RT-AC86U with Merlin firmware), and not getting internet after putting in the correct username and password. Under account settings, change PPP Authentication from 'Auto' to 'PAP' :)

  • +1

pathetic speeds and service quality for mobile connection. 4g speeds are 2mbps consistently! network drop is very very common. customer service is lanky. i would say its not worthy even for free.

    • I just got 4MB/s indoors through 4G. If i'm outside i often get 10MB/s or more. No drop outs what so ever.

I would claim that you're in an extremely marginal reception area through the Telstra network with low speeds and the constant network dropping is a big sign of that being the case. Switching to another Telstra wholesale provider or perhaps even to Telstra retail wouldn't change that. That's not the fault of Mate Mobile but the mobile network itself in the area due to too much signal loss.

You may have to switch to an Optus or Vodafone provider.

  • Have 2 SIMS using the previous code of MATE1 for supposedly 3 months of phone/data for $1 per month.

After first month they sent me 2 x $45 bills. As it's a Sunday they have no support available.

Will call on Monday and cancel both accounts. Ripoff merchants.

    • Missed out on that one, was gonna try the current $1 first month deal, the page says it’s postpaid? That means a credit check right?

      Hope your accounts work out.

  • How do you cancel these sims? I used a one time disposable card but I just found out it's postpaid. Do I need to call up?

    • +1

seems here as I also plan to cancel at end of month
      https://www.letsbemates.com.au/mate/faq/what-is-your-cancell…

      • how did you go with the cancellation? Did you ported out first and then call mate to cancel?

I just ported to mate and planning to churn to Catch in few weeks time but after reading comments I'm worried that they won't answer my calls and bill me the full price even after I churn

        • +2

I've done port out a couple of times. Never had problems. Once port out the service in Mate just show closed.

  • Am getting 3mbps speeds on the 100mbps plan. Crazily bad.

  • Well can confirm speeds are unreliable, down to <20Mbps in peak times. Other times random dips as well.

  • Support is so rude and useless. The worst experience with a telco since before COVID. Uses Telstra Wholesale network so VoLTE doesn't work with some phone like Google Pixel 3 or 3 XL and they won't log a fault for Telstra to fix it.

Poor audio quality when making calls and speeds are erratic.

  • Signed up for NBN + 1 sim, for $2. Let's see how it goes.

  • I have to pay a 300$ NBN new development fee. I wonder if this is the best way to get a "discounted fee" ?

Considering the min cost of 1 month plan is at least 60-70$ for a decent 50/20 speed, wonder if its worth doing this to save about 50$ in fee and cancel before the one month is up?

Tangerine is only the other mob discounting the fee to 275$ so a 25$

    • That's actually not a bad idea.
