Experience with Upgrading from GTX1080 to RX 7900 XTX

Hello everyone,

I've been postponing the upgrade of my reliable old PC, equipped with an i7 6700 and GTX1080, since I built it back in 2016. However, it's not performing too well when it comes to playing the latest games at 3400x1440p resolution (picked up a 34" xiaomi off ozb)

Lately, I've been considering the recent deals on the RX 7900XTX, priced at $1.5k (seriously, what's with these prices when my GTX1080 cost $800 in 2016?). I was wondering if anyone has any experience with upgrading and how badly i would get bottlenecked.

Another question on my mind is whether it would be worth spending an additional $1k or more to squeeze out another 20-30% performance from the RX 7900XTX.

Currently, my focus is on FPS games like Darktide and BF2042, and I'm also looking forward to playing Diablo 4. Additionally, I enjoy simulation games such as Cities Skylines and Transport Fever 2.

If anyone has any thoughts or insights to share, I would greatly appreciate it.

Cheers.

Not really sure about the bottleneck, but you could do a significant upgrade for <$1k

Alternatively, refresh the whole lot next time a good deal pops up at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/techfast.com.au

I agree all the rebuilt deals are mad for the price, though am slightly partial to building my own pc.

      • You'd have to check via ozb message/email, but the last 2 purchases I made from them, I was able to receive the parts loose. No discount but at least I had the piece of mind of no pinched cables etc

  • I've been considering the same, so interested to see what others have experienced.

For what it's worth, I have a GTX1080 with an i5-8500 and have no problems getting 120 FPS on Diablo 4 at 1440p with medium to high settings. I can't speak for the other games you mentioned.

    • are you running at 3440 x 1440 or 2560 x 1440? For the D4 beta, I had FSR on and it looked pretty good to me, so not too worried about D4. My main thing is for FPS's like Darktide and BF - I'm running at low everything with FSR on and get around 40 - 80 fps depending on what's happening on screen. It would be nice to have some eye candy again and solid fps.

      • Ohh I didn't catch that! I am running D4 at 2560 x 1440.

  • Both your cpu and gpu probs gotta go by now. If your budget is limited, spare some for the CPU

:( probs will be relegated to become to the TV movie / game streamer pc at this rate :( Its less of a budget issue and more of a can I be justified spending 2k+ on a pc when interest rates are going up, up and uppity up (so maybe it is a budget issue) - what are you running?

      • Ive got similar to you at this stage - 6600k and gtx1080.

End of the year ill be upgrading to 7900x + 4090

        • Thats like 4-5k though :(

use this as a guide. IMO, if you are not chasing 4k, get a mid tier gpu and spend the rest on upgrading the other stuff. You should get more result than just going all in on a gpu.

    • 46% bottlenecked sigh looks like a new pc might be on the cards after all

  • Dont know if this helps but in D4 (on the highest settings) I get around 100fps with my 2080ti and 9700k@5Ghz on my 3440x1440P monitor. I think the current equivalent of the 2080ti is probably the 4070 so perhaps a 4070 and cpu upgrade would be the best upgrade path……

But for me to get a current gen gpu which is equiv to only 1 gen better than my current, not an amzing upgrade is it haha

  • No need for $1500 GPU (and you will need a PSU upgrade - need 3 x 8 pin connectors)!

For that resolution a 6800/XT, 3070Ti, 4070, etc will work fine for half the price (and only require 2 x 8 pin connectors)

Or less, grab one of these: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/780604

  • I'm running a 4070ti with a old Intel 8400 on an WQHD screen on ultra and it runs 100fps which is what my monitor is no problems. Will upgrade but it's enough for now

  • I'm wondering if the best option is to actually just sell the monitor as it's way too big?

You've basically bought something that requires way more power than you have, and the simplest solution is rather than spending another $1000 to try and match it, you could just sell the monitor and save a lot of cash. If you have no issues with budget though, then just upgrade but it is a bit of a backwards scenario you're going with.

Whaaa!! Sell my 34" ultrawide? Sacrilegious!

I have it also hooked up to my work laptop, makes looking at drawings and excel a breeze.

It looks like i just have to bite the price gouged price and upgrade.

  • Grab the RX 6800 from here for $479

You will go from average 40 to 90 FPS

RX 7900 XTX at $1459 is overpriced - still a number of fundamental issues with the new chiplet design that AMD cannot fix until the 7950 XTX or more likely, the 8000 / RDNA 4 series

    • I think if i wanna upgrade i wanna get top end for a decent price simialr to my 1080 and have it last a good number of yrs.

Do you have the sauce for these "fundamental" issues?

  • What about support for the modern raytracing stuff? Which of the GPUs have good support for that ?

I am in a slightly leaker boat, i4770 + 1080ti and similar monitor

Upgrading CPU+ Motherboard and also moving to NVME storage (Western Digital Black 4TB for under $500 on the way thanks to Oz bargains) + some new hard drive for bulk storage. CPU I think will be Core i9-13900K .. not sure what MB to go for , not into overclocking but want DDR5 and decent number of SATA ports so any suggestions ? In the past if have been a ASUS fanboy but open for suggestions if better value.

Upgrading case and PS as old is nearly 10 years…thinking Fractal Design R5 + 1000 Watt PS for SATA drives & whatever GPU I wind up with

Initially my plan is to stick with 1080ti for a while then upgrade hence interested in suggestions in this post as a cost effective ugrade.

Unit is primarily used to run VMs etc for self education with some gaming on the side for fun.

I have a feeling your in the same boat for me - looks like new pc time :(

In terms of mobo - just put your preferred cpu in pc part picker and sort by cheapest in regards to what features you want it to have. Check whichever chipset gives you the most pcie lanes for the best value in regards to sata /m.2 connections (Or just pick the prettiest one)

  • With the prices being what they are, I'd consider waiting if you could, it's not a good time to build a new PC. Maybe just drop the resolution of your games a notch or reduce the quality of the graphic settings until you can afford a brand PC with more recent parts. The GPU market is so messed up.

  • I have a Ship of Theseus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus) desktop machine that has been through so many changes I've lost count.
Anyway, I had one last bit of kit from the original machine from back in 2006 - the power supply.
What caused me to have to buy a new one was not that the old one was dying/dead, but because it didn't have one of the more modern connectors I needed for my new graphic card.
My point is - you may find you have to buy a new power supply just to be able to have the connections, even if it has the capacity to supply the power.

  • I'm still running a gtx1080 with a 5600x and 1440p monitor.

Currently waiting for the 7800xt to drop and check pricing then.

I'd go for a rtx4070 Ti but unfortunately ( for me ) the NVIDIA VRAM options are too low.
