Getting Credit Card to Buy iPhone to Avail $250 Cashback Offer?

Hey guys,

I am buying a new iPhone 14 Plus from Jb Hifi $200 off offer.

To make it sweeter for me, I am getting a credit card (this one: https://www.commbank.com.au/credit-cards/low-fee.html?ei=low…) to avail their $250 off offer on purchases more than $1000.

I never had credit card, so not sure if I am correct. They have approved me for $5500 credit card. Am I doing this correct to save $250 on my purchase?

Thanks.

    JB hi gift cards?

    • how?

      • Buy JB Hi-Fi gift cards at a discount (e.g. Reward Gateway @ 5% off) and use them to buy the iPhone. Saves you even more that way.

Shame you didn’t sign up to the card earlier, they were doing $300 cashback on $1500 spend but I think you had to apply by the end of May.

  • not bad arrangement, i'm in the same boat want to upgrade the missus phone as well, just starting to look at prices.

    • same, buying for missus. Asked her to wait for 2 weeks before my card comes lol :P

      • yeah i need to apply for the card

  • But Gerry has a model 13 for you with Optus all under 2k!

I doing this correct to save $250 on my purchase?

NOPE, You you will have to wait for $250 to come to your account in a while. In the mean time you'll have to pay for it all, otherwise if you dont then bank will charge interest. So it likely wont be the case that you simply buy e.g. $1600 of purchase, and then pay only $1350, and assume $250 will come and balance it automatically.
If you get $250 instantly or before your statement due date then yeah sure, but its highly unlikely that way.

More likely that you can use $250 credit on your next month or month after's purchases.

  • Yes, you are doing the right thing. As another user suggested, you will have to wait until the $250 comes in which will be like a credit on the following statement period. So if you have the money but are just trying to double dip to get something extra since you are spending it anyways then this is the way to go. Some people do this on a consistent basis to get freebies from credit cards all the time.

    • perfect, thanks :)
