Thinking about setting this up at Mum & Dad’s to share Netflix using Tailscale or something back to my place to overcome location restrictions for password sharing.
Anybody doing this who can offer tips or tricks?

    • -7

Or just pay for it properly

        Yeah, nah.

The Ethernet port is 10/100 so won’t work for 4K

      • +1

None of us have a 4k TV, so no big issue.
Does that mean you can't get 4k Netflix over NBN that isn't fibre? I assumed it would run fine on circa 50Mbps links.

        • +2

Netflix 4K is like 15 mbps.

There's some wank Sony streaming service that claims it requires >100 mbps; that might be where this misconception has come from.

      • 4K requires 25meg, sometimes less.

      • lol how much do you think 4K pulls.

    • If they moderate internet users to be on a 100/20 plan I cant see this working very well.
To test how well it could work just go to there house and have 3 streams of netflix going at once to give them some overhead.

I set one of these up at a family members house in the UK to be allow me to access UK TV services here.
I set up an OpenVPN server on it that I connect to here using another Mango router running OpenVPN Client. It works quite well although I do get occasional buffering. I'm generally seeing speeds of around 5mbps. They have Full fibre with very fast upload speeds (500mbps for both download and upload), so presumably the limiting factor must be the router or OpenVPN.
I can't see why this wouldn't work for your case, although as others have pointed out, you'd be limited to max 1080 streams.

  • Can you put a sim card there?

    • You can plug a usb modem in there

    • Or you can USB tether your phone

Any similar router which can be used with a Sim card to share internet across multiple devices and also had a good battery life? Please advise. TIA

    • TP-Link TL-MR6400 300Mbps 4G Mobile Wi-Fi Router. Has good reviews but no battery I think.

what is the point of this device?

    • +1

It’s a portable router that can serve as an adblock/vpn and network extender in hotels or/and anywhere you might need an ad hoc private network

    • +2

I got one last year, its really handy for travel especially if you are staying at multiple accommodations/motels

Basically, set it up as a wifi repeater:
1 - set it up with its own wifi name and password
2 - connect all your devices to this wifi network (eg, your phone, wife, kids phones, laptops, ipads, nintendo switch etc)
3 - when arriving to accommodation, enter their random password ONCE into the device portal (no need to for everyone to enter the password individually)
4 - provides internet access to all devices already set up with this wifi router

Now i havent used this on a cruise ship (yet), but i have a feeling that it should work. would anyone like to chime in here?

      • Just bought one today to test it out on my upcoming P&O cruise. Hopefully it works.

        • I'm on the cruise now and I can't get it to work. Any luck?

          • @Jayblesz: Got it. Had to connect on phone/lappy first then do a Mac clone.

  • Could this be used as a home router?

    • It could be but probably a bit low in specs.

      • Thanks.

  • Can this link to another wifi id via wifi network?(wifi extender)

    • +1

      Yes

  • Has anyone here used this to have this to create a VPN for their devices?
