beat the cost of living by avoiding ….coles & woolies altogether!

    local european grocers & delis
    local asian & indian grocers
    aldi for 'non-branded' major brands
    food outlets & costco
local green grocers, butchers & bakers

all provide superior quality and can more often be a lot cheaper!

    • +2

ALDI is good but finally applied some price increases too - hasn't done so for ages.

All the junk food on sale, so people just buy that crap.. all non-essental so I'm sure people can tighten up if they had to.

      • So true! Not to mention Uber Eats and the like, who are still thriving as businesses. People got very comfortable when things were good, they don't want to give up their junk food and alcohol. Government, I need more money.

    • +12

I couldn't agree more. Woolies and Coles are playing the game like it's a monopoly. We just need one more big player to come to the game, to make the prices drop. Lot's of the price increases are not inflation related, it's just pure greed .

      • +4

saving so much now that we arent shopping at the grocery mafia…they engage in price gouging and rely on us being lazy, gullible & addicted to convenience

        • +4

I reduced my shopping significantly from Woolies or Coles. I shop around, Aldi, local butcher, Amazon AU and anywhere that prices are reasonable and not money hungry gauging.

      • +1

        Or a duopoly..
Just have to only buy stuff on special.
Amazon isnt cheap for groceries, just went they match woolies and Coles.

        • Yea absolutely amazon is also the same as coles or woolies. Just price match them nothing else

          • @ninohax: Works out well with the s&s.. and saves lugging around bog rolls, paper towels etc

    "½ Price: Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream $6.50"
in WA it's showing up as $7.25 for 1/2 price. WA scammed.

    • …so $29 per 1 litre of ice-cream? …thats nuts!

    • +1

      Same in QLD, $7.25

      Where is getting $6.50?

      • It's $7.25 nationwide @pikeplacemkt

        Mistake by OP.

  • +1

Ben and Jerry's is not a total rip-off at that price.

Greens still is. Every product I've tried has been awful. Their pancake mix was like glue. Terrible cake mixtures. Always much worse quality and taste than the very worst no-name home-brand stuff, while usually being much more expensive, too.

I honestly don't know how they do it.

Is Ben & Jerry's really (at least) twice as good as the Connoisseur 1L tubs ?

They can be had for $6 (half price) every couple of months, and quite often for $9, and quite a few of the flavours are really good. B&J is usually around $10 on special for the 1 pint or whatever it is (about 450ml I think) which is a crazy price - unless it is ridiculously better than the Connoisseur ??

    • -6

you pay a premium for their politics…i suggest trying their 'virtue-signalling' flavour, its deliciously creamy & self gratifying whilst having no real substance!

    • Connoisseur focuses on simpler ice creams with one or two things added whereas B&J's have at least half a dozen things or more typically, so it's not exactly like for like. They're both good quality, it just matters what you are looking for at the time. I think B&J's are overpriced but that type of ingredient-cluttered ice cream is more expensive no matter the brand.

      • +1

I can only assume you have never actually read the epic nightmare that is the Connoisseur ingredient list. You may be be getting it confused with Haagen Dazs

        • +4

I think he meant in terms of simple ice cream with one or two flavours added vs many different flavours e.g. B&j with pieces of unicorn and goblin blood infused into chocolate swirl and pretzels.

Agree with you re: the ingredients list though. Haagen dazs much more simple/ higher quality but you pay the premium for it

    • +1

You've clearly never tried Ben & Jerry's if you need to ask that question… Do yourself a favor

    • -1

      Connoisseur is rubbish

      • Connoisseur is good, especially their cookies and cream.

Sara Lee ice cream is the one that's priced and marketed like a premium ice cream but is worse quality than no-name ice cream.

    • +1

      $7.99 @ Aldi

    • Yes B&J is like super indulgent extremely tasty but packed tightly in a smaller container.

      Superb quality but tiny quantity.

Connosieur is definitely OK but flavour is less compacted and dense.

Anyone that sells literal junk food, that is frozen, and transported from America that claims to care about the environment are green-washing hypocrites regardless of how much money they throw at environmental or political adverts.

  • -5

It’s very important to raise the price of food, because the “average” Australian just doesn’t value it. The imaginary cost-of-living crisis is not backed up by any facts — it’s just a media talking point. Remember that global inequality continues to rise, and there is more disposable income sloshing around than ever before…

It is estimated Australians throw out the equivalent of $36.6 billion worth of food every year. That equates to $2,000 to $3,000 worth from each household.

    • +6

I dont half disagree and most people would waste a lot of food. I'm sure a lot of people could also cut down on junk food and other luxury items as well.

That being said it is a simple fact that a lot of supermarket items I commonly buy have gone up by 20-30% in the last year. It's price gouging and greed, not just the 7% inflation.

    • +1

Agreed - cost of living affects only a small % of people who genuinely need help.
The rest simply don't like having to compromise any discretionary spending that they've become used to.

      • +1

Exactly, and over commit themselves to expensive houses and cars then have a winge.

Though many today who complain can get a job, which are literally everywhere. They choose not to and

And choose not to complete their sentences? (And I’m not talking about getting out early…)

I kind of like this literary flourish, though. Such a bold technique engages one’s imagination
