How Can I Connect a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse to a Docking Station Rather than to a Computer ?

How can I connect a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to a docking station rather than to a computer, so that I can easily switch between computers with the mouse and keyboard connected to the dock?

Hi all,

I have a microsoft surface keyboard (Model# 3YJ-00013) and Microsoft Surface mouse (Model# 3YR-00005) as shown in the picture.
➊ I want to be able to connect the keyboard and mouse to my work laptop and personal laptop. For example, from 8am-4pm i use my work laptop and between 8pm-10pm i want to use my personal laptop.

• The issue with the above is that this Microsoft keyboard only allows me to connect to 1 laptop at a time.
➼ I have to manually disconnect and reconnect via laptop setting each time I want to change between uses.

I have a Dell D3100 Docking Station and I have purchased a Volans bluetooth 5.0 Dongle thinking by plugging into this dongle my docking station would help my situation… but it hasn't helped (unless i'm doing something wrong).

Is it possible to connect the keyboard and mouse to a central device and then connect that device to my docking station, therefore I am able to use the laptops interchangeably based on which laptop the docking station is plugged into.

Please let me know your thoughts.

No. Bluetooth is paired to the computer. You will need to get a keyboard and mouse that uses their own dongle as those are paired dongle to keyboard/mouse.

    • Thanks for your help. So how about if I purchase 2 dongles and connect them both to the docking station (sorry if its a dumb Q)… I just really like the design of the Microsoft Surface keyboard and mouse and want to keep using those.

It won't help to have two bluetooth dongles. The keyboard and mouse remember which computer they are paired with, not the dongle.

twobit was referring to an alternative keyboard/mouse that uses a non-bluetooth wireless connection.

Buy a Logitech mouse/kb that lets you switch between 3 devices.

Or you could use remote desktop from your work pc after 4PM, but that would have the 2 laptops on at the same time.

  • Ya missed out seeing my old deals

I still use both of them, AND BOTH WORK FLAWLESSLY

  • Im using 1 keyboard and 1 mouse for work and personal laptop.

    Logitech mx keyboard
    Logitech lift vertical.
No need dock no need dongle just Bluetooth

    • My current Microsoft Surface Keyboard and Mouse (Model# 3YJ-00013) (Model# 3YR-00005) both connect to the laptops, but i have to manually disconnect them via PC setting after each use.

      • Nope with my setup just follow if you want stress free. Stop worrying and thinking what of what if how this how that but this but that… Just buy and enjoy the long weekends

  • I just thought I can connect my bluetooth keyboard and mouse devices to a single bluetooth device?

    • Again, read above.

You can't use the Surface Keyboard and Mouse to do what you want.

The dongle you've bought allows the laptop to communicate to devices such as your keyboard and mouse via Bluetooth, it doesn't connect to them on it's own.

The dongle is no different to the Bluetooth radio that is built in to your laptop.

You either need to use a keyboard and mouse that comes with a USB (2.4 Ghz) wireless receiver or a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse that works with multiple devices out of the box, such as the one ChiMot has suggested.

  • If you had Logitech kb and mouse, it would be possible using a Logitech Unifying dongle. But not with Microsoft and Bluetooth.

  • Just get a normal wireless keyboard and mouse set (ie. with a wireless dongle rather than using Bluetooth) and plug the dongle into the docking station.
