Do You Want to See a Tag for Reposted Deals?

After seeing @PainToad's comment on this deal repost/reminder, I thought it'd be appropriate to create forum/poll where people can vote to decide if they think a [Repost] tag would be a good idea where a long running deal is being reposted.

It'd give those users who dislike these reposts, the ability to block them similar to the way Subscription Service Additions are currently handled.

Yes I know there is a thread for these suggestions, but I wanted to seek a community vote on the idea.

I would've thought that it might be easier to just have the option to block the "Long Running" tag, but then that may cause all deals with that tag to disappear from view even if they are on a store's page.

Interested to see the response here.

Yes, there should be a [Repost] tag (or something similar)

No, leave them how they are with the current Long Running tag

  • What are ‘Subscription Service Additions’? Just the ability to Subscribe to threads of interest?

    I just keep scrolling tbh

Rather than repost, personally I don't think long running post should be posted again — otherwise they are just 6-month-cycle reposted deals. What then is the point of long running deals in the first place, especially when we have to go back to the previous "long running" deal and mark it as expired.

The whole point of allowing repost of long running deals is reminding people who otherwise didn't catch the long running deal in the first place (or have forgotten about it).

What we should do is to automatically bring back some of those long running deals to the front page after 6/12 months (e.g. mods can flag a long running deal as reschedulable for front page). What we don't want to see is people going through old long running deals to pick high voted ones and repost them again to earn easy badges.

Scheduling popular long running deals to hit the front page is a good idea.

Came back to post this exact comment

      Or auto repost the deal

Thats exactly what I want to happen. I only browse recent deals, how else would I see the deal exists?

Yes good thinking. Might stop some salty external commentary.

Talking about salty. People that upvote someone that says Scrooge McRepost when them selfs have posted heaps of re- shares. See example 1 , example 2 , example 3 , Example 4 and many more. Not to mention the other person that upvoted.
        I just don't like saltiness.
        No double standards here.

        • I don’t know what your motives are because first you started doing long running deals and in the comments you say you don’t like them. Are you playing and acting like a good citizen?

          • -2

@HamBoi69: First of all, if you remember, you enlightened me that we are allowed to post long running deals. I started posting those deals first because there are people that are not aware of those deals. And second I started posting those deals (4 in total) because I knew it will create a reaction and to prove a point that this deals shouldn't be allowed to be posted every six months. Would you like to count how many you have posted comparing how many I posted? I posted 4 in total. How many did you post?

    • I think a good exception to your thinking is if a deal drastically changes. Like the GitHub student pack I reposted 3 years later.

      • +1

If a deal has drastically changed then it would be a new deal. Otherwise we'll just have one "Bank's Saving Account Paying Interest" rather than a new post every time RBA updates the interest rate. However we also don't want people running diff on terms and conditions page to claim 2 line trivial changes as drastic.

    • What we should do is to automatically bring back some of those long running deals to the front page after 6/12 months…

Except long running deals (e.g. those that use Türkiye gift cards to pay for subscriptions) would be out of date in 6 months due to currency fluctuations. When someone reposts those types of long running deals, they generally update the post with updated AUD pricing (after FX conversion) so an automated repost wouldn't be accurately priced.

      • out of date in 6 months due to currency fluctuations

They're out of date the moment they're posted.

Simple solution is stop including AUD conversions. It takes 2 seconds to Google the conversion.

Better solution, an actual field for the amount and currency, which gets updated daily based on the conversion.

Having the title of deals just being a string and then complaining when users don't enter the title in "correct" format always felt like a problem that should of been solved long ago.

Make all the components of title seperate fields (product, store, price, discount) and build the title automatically.

        • Simple solution is stop including AUD conversions. It takes 2 seconds to Google the conversion.

We're already doing it in some deals, like my AliExpress coupon deals. Plus there's not enough room anyway.

        • Yes, they're technically "out of date" once posted, but by a negligible amount.

You're definitely overcomplicating things though. It takes less than a second to scroll past something that only gets reposted once every six months, compared to Googling a current FX chart or the effort required to dev up a solution to pull in an up to date currency conversion for that day.

          • @KangaDrew: As a developer, it’s my instinct to identify issues that can be easily fixed with simple code.

            • @PainToad: a fix for you, broken UX for users. Listen to users :)

              • @[Deactivated]:

a fix for you, broken UX for users. Listen to users :)

                ^100% this

As a UI/UX tester, "simple code solutions" by devs often cause a tonne of issues downstream, all because siloed viewpoints were behind the decision making process, rather than taking on board feedback from multiple points of view.

      • currency fluctuations

That's why we always request deals paying foreign currencies to post the monetary amount in their original currency. Some countries are on the verge of hyper-inflation — please just use the comments in the long running deals to discuss these. Long running deals can also be updated.

In that case it wouldn't hurt to add a 'sort comments by new' or something similar? Otherwise it'd be kind of annoying to click through pages of comments that are weeks/months/years old that may or may not be relevant. Unless this is already a feature that I am unaware of…

      • +1

Sort comments by new — you mean showing comments on the deal using reverse chronological order, i.e. new ones at the top?

        • Yes, the oldest comments on the last page, rather than the first. The most relevant/up to date comments being the first ones seen if a user goes to the comments of a deal if that makes sense. Like Reddit's sort by new comments.

If a long-running post was posted years or even months prior and thus has pages and pages of comments (especially if the post is brought to the front page every 6/12 months as you suggested here), it would be a hassle to click through to the last page of comments each time you visit the page (and want to see relevant comments).

    • That’s a great idea proposal scotty! Hope it goes in effect.

Add a poll option for "I don't care" please.

I'd like to see a tag for posts jv has made a comment in and a notification when he is in/out of penalty box

    • -1

Why not just block jv comments if you don’t like them? Bet you don’t but, jv posts give OzBargain its spice.

  • For sure- I think it would be fine and dandy like cotton candy.

I have posted 4 deals of re-share out of 463. People started complaining about the re share suddently.
Btw just found out of this rule of re sharing long running deals not long ago. I started re sharing to inform about the deals to people that missed them and are not aware of them. But also to prove a point that this deals shouldn't be allowed to be reshared. Hotukdeals what they do it's they usually re share the deal on the top when the deal it's getting close to expiring. However I believe that an auto re share of the deal would be ideal.
What I don't understand it's how come people didn't complain previously when they were re sharing deals? Unless they did complain and I missed it?

Personally, it always bugged me. But I ignored it because it was the only thing that really annoyed about the site. But the more I feel this place is heading in the wrong direction, the more I’m inclined to point out things.

I love this site. This will be my 13333 comment so I clearly spend a lot of time here. But the last few years have been rough.

The new hands off approach to moderating.

The allowing of posting deals that aren’t deals.

The mob mentality of attacking anyone who dares to neg a deal.

The fact that I’m scared to neg a deal now because if enough people neg one of my comments in the deal (even if it has nothing to do with my reason for negging), my neg vote gets revoked. If too many of your neg votes get revoked, you loose the ability to neg at all.

It just feels like the site is no longer about sharing bargains. It’s being treated like a Reddit/Forum where so long as someone’s posting and clicking, the ad revenue keeps rolling in.

So the reposting of deals every 6 months just feels like recycling content to get another round of clicks.

Edit: and there you go. I’m already being voted down.

      • Mate don't worry what others do. Like don't care about neg votes or things that are not important. See the whole picture. Do you benefit from the majority of the posts? Have you saved heaps of money by a lot of deals? Then Ozbargain it's doing what it was meant to do. It should also be understandable that the site needs to maintain it's popularity and revenue.
My opinion Ozbargain it's an awesome site. There is nothing like it in Australia. So we should be grateful for this site.

I want the ability to vote on long running deals, especially for the gaming freebies so I can easily identify if I have already claimed them from the freebie page
