nexus tablet for 229…wheres the special in that? dafuq

this time it will be a failure again with 1 in stock

  • will COTD reveal exactly how much stock they have for each deal? "very limited stock" could really mean 1… or none..

  • An ingenious way to get facebook likes..

  • +3

As you said, "it's a failure with ZERO stock last time" How would you know that it won't be the case this time? (I learnt it in the hard way, wasting a whole day as A) you don’t know when the item you want would be there so at the beginning of every hour you want to log in which is almost impossible and even if you managed to log in, the stock is gone! B) from time to time they squeeze in rubbish products. It’s a huge disgrace and a total shame for COTD to conduct a promotion in this disgusting manner. Needless to say the trick must have generated lots of traffic so they were tempted to do it again. Not this time for me , no way!!

    • -7

Regardless, it was a bargain for some people who were able to purchase.

  • +1

    oh god not this again…

  • +1

This doesn't look like I can buy it. Neg.

  • +2

"The TOP SIX most liked will make it on the sale, then we will pick the other 18 surprise deals."

"….for the WHOLE DAY we feature an amazing deal EVERY 30 Minutes - with each deal lasting for just half an hour!…."

"As you no doubt already know: we are Australia's most VISITED online department store."

"…very limited stock numbers with OVER 300,000 visitors on the day…"

Do I need to comment on these?

  • +1

At least three of the items listed there you can get any day cheaper from overseas (vac, coffee maker, and mixer).
If you are interested in those items, PM me and I will direct you to them.

    • Cheaper KitchenAid mixers from overseas can only be used with step down transformers, and don't have the same warranty as mixers bought in Australia.

I'm skeptical of the mixer that may or may not be sold by COTD tomorrow, because it is below wholesale price, so maybe it's refurbished or something.

      • Why would I need a step down transformer when everything but the plug is the same in Europe/ you are talking about appliances from the US which run on 110V. Your comment does not apply to Europe.

        • Fair enough, but there is still the warranty issue. Where have you found cheap European KAs?

  • +1

It is just a trap, not even a honey one . The only purpose is to get more traffic for its website at the expense of wasting the majority of people’s time. I would be very interested to know, or do a survey , like exactly how many people get what they want to buy at the end of the day?

    • The advertising has worked on me. If I don't get what I was interested in tomorrow, I'm closing my account and removing all evidence from Facebook.

  • the epitome of online marketing, much cheaper than any campaign

  • i love it how it says top 6 will be sold in extrememly low quantities ! LOOOOOOOOOOL

  • +1

I wouldn't mind that dslr.. thinking it's a damn good price to get started in photography.

By all means recommend a better deal if you know of one.

    • +2

i wouldn't call it a deal, it's more akin to buying a raffle ticket and hoping you get a prize. the difference is, if you buy a raffle ticket you don't waste a whole day on the computer

  • I dont have FB, but i do hope the HDD goes on special.

  • dup

  • COTD Flash Sale? Oh you.

  • Took a day off work last time, website was slow and items sold out before I got to it. Expect 1 or 2 stock

  • Nothing to see here.

  • COTD should be imprisoned for this kind of false advertising.

    • +4

Agree, there should be some sort of consumer protection law against this type of thing. They should have to disclose the stock level. It's wasting peoples time on a mass scale. There is a little corner in hell waiting for the people who run COTD.

      • "the advertisement will need to clearly state the limitation. Statements such as “while stocks last” will not generally be sufficient to avoid liability."

any other law students on here with spare time keen to join me in launching an ACL claim in the FMC - The FMC can provide injunctive relief and award damages up to $750,000 concerning Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Schedule 2 Australian Consumer Law).

  • Do you know whats time will it start?

  • +1

Nobody cares what time it starts. You are wasting your time and effort because there will be a minute amount of stock available. It is effectively just a marketing scam. .

  • +2

This week's tatts is $10 million. A real barain for 50 cents. I am going to post it now. And it's only just a little bit harder than getting the above bargains.

    • I think I've got a better chance of winning the million at Lotto than I have getting a rock bottom priced DSLR.

  • Announced on the COTD FB page.

    Latest iPad for $299

    Samsung Galaxy SIII for $399

Canon EOS 1100D SLR twin lens kit $299

    Kindle for $39

    Fifty Shades Trilogy $1

    WD 500GB USB 3.0 HDD for $20

  • +3

How about we lodge a petition to ACCC complaining about COTD? That should make them be more transparent in their advertising. For all i know they could be just having 2 of the units for sales for the whole Australia. They probably be laughing their ass off on their chair knowing us consumers did free advertising for them on FB!

  • +5

How the HELL did fifty shades of garbage get there?….

    • +1

now now, haven't you heard- don't judge a book by its reviews? Let's break it down:

      • girl has low self-esteem: CHECK

      • insanely hot guy with stalker-ish tendencies: CHECK

      • girl has divorced parents; mum's a drama queen: CHECK

      • boy and siblings- all adopted: CHECK

      • girl makes enemy; boy saves the day: CHECK

      • sex: CHECK, CHECK and CHECK

      • boy is a vampire: CHEC- oh waaait.

      dear God you're right.

  • site down

  • canon is the current product

    • sold out less than 5 minutes

  • +1

Got it into my shopping cart but by the time i'd gotten to payment info it had sold out :(

  • +1

8mins in and the camera i was after has sold out.. f**k!

  • Canon EOS 1100D SLR Twin Lens Kit $299..

LESS THEN ONE MINUTE AND ITS GONE????

    FOUL PLAY!!

  • Thought I'd give this kind of sale another chance after being infuriated with it in the past. This is how it went down: Logged into the site at 10:58, at 10:59:57 I click refresh. It takes about 30 seconds to load, but there it is, the camera.. not sold out. I click buy and wait another 20 seconds, a pop-up appears saying '1 item added to your cart' - I click checkout. After waiting another 30 seconds I am brought to a checkout page that says I have no items in my cart. I have also mysteriously been logged out. I log back in and go to the homepage. What do you know? Sold out! Not bothering with the rest of the sale today.

Oh well, at least this flash sale will give A Current Affair another excuse to shamelessly promote COTD to the uneducated.

  • I still saw some people bought the camera. How comes???my web wass freezze

    • Yep, I saw 27 unique usernames appear in the "just bought" ticker as having bought the SLR kit. So I reckon they had a few more than most people assume.

Still virtually impossible to score one though!

  • Instant Fisherman Portable Fishing Kit!
    No thanks.

What is a reasonable quantity or period?

The definition of reasonable will depend upon the type of product offered for sale, the nature of the advertisement and the nature of the market in which the company operates.
    ….
If a retailer advertises widely, then it would be expected to carry more stock than if it only advertises in its local area. If there is a limited stock issue, and this is disclosed in the advertisement, then there will be no liability. However, the advertisement will need to clearly state the limitation. Statements such as “while stocks last” will not generally be sufficient to avoid liability.
    ….
the nature of the market will be a function of the size of the company, the normal customer base, and the normal area served.
    ……

It's ironic that they engaged in a classic example of bait advertising then switched to a fishing rod?
    • Haha. They are laughing at us.

  • is the mouse decent?

  • +1

I thought this sale was every hour on the hour, instead they have that crappy mouse, not even cheap!!!!

  • If anybody is interested in the mixer, don't worry about missing out. There are better deals around, even on Kitchenaid Artisans.

    • Yes,how do i do?

    • I'm interested in the mixer. Send me the link to better deals so I don't have to waste my time waiting for it here.

      • Yes, I will before I go home. It is a Kitchenaid Artisan.

      • Here you go! Hope it is of use.

  • ready? 113.192.17.199

  • when is SGS3 making the appearance?

    • +1

Right when you decide to go to the bathroom

    • +1

      From Facebook:
"Shubhy Malik - Guys I just called the support desk, mistakenly the lady mentioned Samsung will be at 6pm!"

      She was wrong, it's now.

      • $399 isn't a better deal than what's on eBay anyway…

        • It would be good if they did it at anotehr time too, but it was gone by the time I managed to get into view my cart. I suspect the Ipad is going to be the same…oh COTD, why do I fall for your marketting campaigns everytime!

  • +3

keeps logging me out and making me re-enter my username and password

fair enough if the server crashes to overllogging, but when you can't even keep me logged in, what a sorry system

its too nice a day in melbourne (for a change) to sit infront of my computer and try to 'refresh' and try my luck. better things to do.

good luck to the rest of you.

one less person to compete against :)

  • I think the Samsung Galaxy for $399 is a good deal. It says it includes GST so I should be able to get that back when I leave the country right?

    • -4

      gst is non refundable.

    • correct if you would like to claim trs

  • looks like about 30 samsung phones were on offer

  • it went so fast , it felt like 3 were on offer….

  • +2

Lucky me… my 3GS is soon going to be a GS3. Woo hoo!

I had 5 browsers open. 1 on the phone, 2 in chrome and 2 in IE. For some reason, IE logged me out at exactly half past the hour after a 30 second refresh but chrome kept me logged in (luckily).

Would have preferred to win 10 million at the lottery since the odds for that is only slightly lower than winning the GS3 for $400+ but I'm happy :)

Missed out on the SLR though.

    • Congrats. What colour did you get?

      • No idea. Don't think they gave you any options, or maybe I just missed it because I wanted to complete the checkout asap.

    • Congratulations! Even one person benefiting to such an extent is worth the hoohah of these dumb promotions.

  • its like gambling….. 3 mins for the next throw of the dice.!!!!

  • +3

The only time I can get on the site is when there is a crappy item like golf balls or currently, a watch. Fail.

  • Waste of 1 minute.

  • This is almost unacceptable practice! They're like worse than shopping square now! Get hundred thousand of customers to advertise for them, for them to only offer my guess 10 for sale? There must be something we consumers can do about it!

    • ACCC??

      • Well they have "advertised" on their facebook page that there were 57,000 people on their website and from their advertising they expected as many people as they did from their last sale, which would be probably 57,000 at a time as well. Now the question is, is 30 of each item enough to be considered reasonable quantity for 57,000 people…

        • definitely no! at least 10% of the vote!

    • Isn't this something like loss leading? Supermarkets for example sell certain sale items of limited quantity for below cost price in order to bring in customers hoping that the customers will purchase other items as well that would cover the losses. If that's not illegal, I don't see how ACCC can act against COTD for what I think is clever marketing.

  • -1
  • i like how before they let you log in and see the deals, they make you agree not to whinge and complain about COTD to 'your facebook friends'

i somehow dont see that one flying too well….

  • +2

i for once already rung ACCC and they made a record of that..so the more ACCC aware of such practice by COTD, the more likely they will take action against them!

  • That's low… COTD just made me "Like" them in order to see the sunglasses deal. Needless to say, I unliked them straight away.

    • Considering I had already 'liked' them on Facebook this was just a ploy to get people onto their Facebook page for whatever reason. Lame.

  • we are clicking ok for this before going into the site… wonder how many would have actually read it???

By entering CatchOfTheDay.com.au today, I understand that I'll be competing against some 400,000 fast Aussies for a very limited quantity of products and my chances of getting something are quite slim. However, I'd like to give it a shot and promise not to whinge to my friends or CatchOfTheDay.com.au. Let me in already!

I'll be competing against some 400,000
I'd like to give it a shot and promise not to whinge to my friends or CatchOfTheDay.com.au.

    lol…

Edit: if it is considered as competition then shouldn't they be having some licence for it?

    • good point,…

""To run a trade promotion lottery, that is a competition which promotes the sale of your goods or services and which offers a chance to win a prize, you will need to get a permit from NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing. Application fees for permits range in cost from $125 to $2,100 depending on the value of the prize or money you will be giving away.""
      http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/Businesses/Advertising_and…

      • Is it really a competition or lottery though? It's not like people are paying $10 for the chance to win a million $. They are buying a product and products can go out of stock.

  • I just saw Bite me for kindle but not interested.when Ipad will come up?

    • Hopefully not during the commute home from work.

  • why I am getting Kindle again as a new deal ? I thought the deal has expired already from 3.00 to 3.30pm Is it issue only with me ?

    • -1

      I'm getting it too :(

Edit: Now getting free shipping ad for grocery run.

  • +1

I made the most of that free shipping as there was some stuff I wanted on GR but wasn't willing to pay postage on.

  • These sales that last under 60 seconds are totally f'king worthless. This is the second time I've been burned with one of these and I'm not going to bother again.

If you have such limited stock that crap like this happens, let everyone who is keen 'register' for one over your half hour sale (with cc details or paypal or something if you like) and award stock with a ballot system.

If you're feeling fancy, people who have won previous auctions could be weighted with less of a chance in the other ones.

Otherwise all your doing is flogging your webserver and pissing people off.

Edit: If you're listening COTD, you can have my idea, royalty free!

  • +1

Just had an iPad in my cart, hit checkout, told me it had sold out. Screw it. I'm out. Waste of time trying to get anything decent.

    • Exactly the same thing happened to me

    • Same happened to me, on 4:31 I got to the enter your paypal username and password page, when suddenly "server error" occurred and then told me item was sold out.

I suspect there wouldn't have been more than 3 iPads.

    • ditto… ipad loaded, hit bite me, then checkout and cart was empty… wtf

    • EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME WITH SGS3!! FREAKIGN CHEATER! I'LL NEVER BELIEVE THESE DEALS AGAIN! AND PLEASE GUYS JUST GIVE ACCC A CALL TO GIVE THEM A PIECE OF OUR MINDS

      • -1

u first to call accc mate

        • well i hope i wont be the last! happened to me with SGS3 and now IPAD…i mean how can u still sold out when i already got it in checkout!!!

        • +1

Because stock is not reserved until the order is finalised and processed.
