FAQ thanks to BG

Question Answer
1. Is Boost operated by Telstra network? Yes, on the full Telstra network
2. Does Boost support 5G? Yes, for all Boost prepaid customers and it is currently on trial until 3 April 2023
From 4 April 2023, 5G network access will be included as standard on your service and we’ll be introducing capped download speed caps on our 4G and 5G networks
3. Does Boost support e-SIM? Sadly not at this stage. However there are plans to do so
4. Do you have to activate the SIM within 30 days? Every Cashrewards Boost cashback up to and including March 31 has been approved (confirmed by TA) - provided you activated within 30 days of order
5. How long is the SIM expiry? Usually 1 year, but to qualify for cashback the SIM must be activated within 30 days of ordering
6. It is showing “new customer” on Boost website. What does this mean? New customer term is only for the additional Boost data, and nothing to do with the cashback offer
7. Can I receive international text message (aka int. roaming) with this SIM by default? Yes, you can receive SMS while overseas, but can’t send outgoing to Australia
8. How long does it take to receive the SIM? According to the Boost Rep: Once dispatched, you should receive your order within the following business days: Metro Areas – 2-5 business days for capital cities – Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart & Brisbane (order before 4pm). Non Metro or Regional / remote areas – 3-7 business days
9. Is porting in a Telstra number to Boost considered a "new customer"? From Boost Mobile rep via dm: Porting a number from Telstra to Boost is definitely considered a new customer
10. Are you able to purchase multiple plans using different names / ID (or can I purchase 4 x plans for the family using my own details)? From Boost Mobile rep via dm: Received clarification from the team and this is a tricky one since for compliance the terms is showing the customer is only allowed 1 sim per transaction but he can buy multiple SIMs and then activate them all under his name and he will then be able to manage all the numbers when he logs into the App with his Boost ID.
11. Information on what to do when the "please try again later" message comes up List of indicators that can affect how your order is flagged in different financial systems, which can hopefully help you understand what is going wrong
12. Can this be used to recharge? No, this is a starter pack. Using as a "recharge" is being dis-allowed and activating first and moving the number may be allowed but is frowned upon and may not be allowed in future depending on how you ask for it.

Enjoy!

Boost is "full telstra network" however I have noticed I no longer get reception in the toilet at work, where Telstra worked fine

    • +5

Why are you on your phone in the toilet 🤨

    • Did you check if they added extra thickness to the wall?

      • +14

They did not suddenly add lead plates to the Wall the same day I switched to boost, no.

    • +18

I no longer get reception in the toilet at work

That might be because of the crap service.

      • +2

Ok fine you can have this one.

      • jv on fire today

    • +1

nowadays we cant do shit without the phone.

      • Including doing a shit ha

    • +5

I completely agree. I call 100% bullshit on full telstra network. Where I used to easily get reception with Telstra I now do not with Boost. Shopping centres are an example of this.

      • +1

Precisely this. I'm running both telstra and this side by side on two s23s. Telstra is better.

        • Same here. Have got Telstra and Boost and whilst I don't have the same phone models, I have tested by swapping the SIM cards and can say with certainty that I don't receive the same signal strength on the Boost network. It's good though - better than other providers but agree that it's not quite exactly the same.

        • I've seen something about wholesale and retail network, so that may the missing word to distinguish the differences reported between Telstra and Boost

    • ditto. side by side comparison of boost sim and telstra sim (samsung phones 1 gen apart) driving across nullabor and beyond clearly shows a difference in reception. less noticeable in towns.

  • +4

Get this before the price increase next month.

    • +2

But activate within 30 days kills the offer. My renewal is due only in December

      • My renewal is also in December.

Seems like the $170 is the new $140 for this 12-month plan.

However, if enough people boycott the $170 plans, they can bring it down further…

        • +1

Price beat in Officeworks will be $161 which is still a great price. That’s what I intend to do, my plan is up in October.

        • Yes the normal price used to be cheaper at Coles with ow pricebeat, no worrying about cashbacks. The last one I got had $40 cashback at least.

  • +7

I'll be ditching Boost next month after there 42% price increase when my 12 month plan ends .

    • +3

who will you switch too that offers better value?

      • +1

Unfortunately coles floptus but I refuse to pay a 42% increase .

        • Unfortunately coles floptus

How much cheaper do they work out to be?

          • +3

@jv: This week coles has 365 plan on sale with all the same inclusions as boost for $119 .

            • @spock: Think about porting out and porting back in to stay on Boost on a deal like this. I went from boost to coles Optus and I ended my time on that prepaid plan early just because for me, it was quite a noticeable step down in connection speed, reception and stability. That was my experience anyway.

              • +1

@Movember20: Thanks for the heads up I been concerned about Optus looking at comments . I guess if I buy this boost deal & do what your saying it's works out cheaper my plan ends end July so few days doesn't matter activate in 25 day porting etc .

              • +1

@Movember20: Its very much dependent on your particular area. Others will tell you that telstra network was poor and Optus was much better. Best to test your particular circumstances and pick appropriately. In the city metro area I've not seen a significant winner.

                • @sane: Totally agree. I was Belong (telstra) price increases forced me to look elsewhere.
I am pleasantly surprised with Lebara (vodaphone).
As you say "Best to test your particular circumstances and pick appropriately".

        • +3

You couldn't pay me to go back to Optus.

      • +3

        For the cashback

    • +1

You will be able to but you won't get the cashback and inclusions might change from the 4th of July.

  • +1

Really wanted to get this but can't do it without an e-sim support

  • +4

I just buy monthly prepaid sims every month and boost pays me to be on their network.

    • Can you keep your number month to month with this?

    • -1

Imo, this kind of promo isn't gonna last for long. They are only doing this to get new users in. Once they have a good user base those promos will stop and they will focus on retention more.

  • +1

if i already have boost and i want to have this plan, can i just activate it on my existing sim or do i need to faff around with receiving a new sim and activating that one?

This won't for recharging and Boost might not allow you to change your number from your current Boost sim to the new one. In the linked thread people suggest to switch the current number to an Aldi 5 AUD SIM and then get it ported on the new Boost sim.

I have the renew my 12 month plan also soon and not really want to pay 200…

      • +1

My renewal is next week. Received a text from boost with a link to renew at $170.

        • oh that is good info, hope I get it next week as well then.

        • Can you share the link, please? (if it's some generic one. thank you!)

    • +2

I've done it 3 times now. You have to get on boost chat and ask the agent to transfer your number to the new sim.
EDIT: Seems they've cracked down on this method. So will need to port out and in.

      • Yeah, I realise that now. I'll be moving to another carrier. Open to suggestions. Thinking of Amaysim.

        • My experience from about 2 years ago Amaysim was okay as long as you stays in major CBD.

Going on a road trip can be a pain compared to Boost unless they have improved dramatically after I switched back.

      • I've also done it twice now. Boost chat ported me from my old Boost SIM to a new SIM starter pack on 10/05/23 without any drama so you may get lucky.

      • +1

I’ve done it a handful of times, too. On occasion when customer service say it’s not possible, I call back to try again with someone different. Last done a few months back, so things could be different now.

  • Any good deals on 6 months plan?

  • quite costly considering the 1 Year 180 GB Amaysim was available for $100 just a while back. Decent if you are after the Telstra network though. And thank you very much for the FAQ OP.

  • anyone has recently imported from ALDI to Boost?

    • I had monthly boost plan, ported to Aldi $5 prepaid plan and then to boost yearly plan. All within an hour.

  • I’m current on a Boost 365 day plan but nearly used all my data inclusion.

So I can purchase this deal, port out to Aldi $5 SIM, wait a few days, then port back even after 4 July and I will still get the 140GB for the price I paid? And of course need to activate within 30 days of purchase to get the cashback.

    • think u got to wait for a min 1 month before u can join boost again.

      • +1

Nope you do not. I'd give it maybe a day or two to allow their number system to fully recognize you leaving the system to avoid any issues with the service when you port back (calling, data or sms issues which can sometimes occur).

    • I moved from boost to Aldi $5 plan and back to boost all within an hour. You don't have to wait for days. Once you get network reception from a provider then you are registered with them and you can move away from them.

  • +1

What will happen if the $200 SIM is activated after the price rise to $230 on 4 July?

Will new customers still get 140GB? Will they still be able to activate for the price of the SIM? Or will they need to chip in an extra $30?

    • +1

My best guess based on last time they increased the price (unless they do it differently this time) is your Sim pack remains okay as long as you are within the expiry date on it. You can still activate and use for a year but then you will need to recharge at the new rate.
Only thing is you might get 130GB instead of 140GB after that date as 10GB of those would be an activation promotion within certain period.

      • You're right. I found this on the plan change website:

From 4 July 2023 most of our activation and recharge prices are increasing and some inclusions changing. If you buy a SIM today, you’ll get the current data and inclusions upon activation, even if you activate after 4 July 2023. However, if you recharge after 4 July, your options will change.

  • +1

Seems boost lost lots of customers to the recent Amaysim deal

    • +1

or gained a lot of customers who never renewed after the first activation ( thanks to profit of buying new SIMs, through cashrewards n shopback)

  • Anyone know if I can renew early?

Current one expires in 60 days but I need to keep Telstra reception for work unfortunately. (profanity) monopoly. Probably won't even use the cashback deal then if I get another month out of it.

    • dont quote me on this

but theoretically if you ported out to a $5 aldi sim, you end your plan right? then port back in using a new starter kit…

      • Yeah that'd definitely work, I was more thinking they might let me do it without needing to port out.

  • Any free eSIM providers that we can quickly port out and then port back in from?
I used to use Felix but it look like their free 1 month offer has elapsed.

  • I ordered a boost mobile sim and am still waiting on its arrival. My tangerine plan ends next week Monday, is there someone I can switch to in between so that I don't have to pay for a month of tangerine before my boost sim arrives?

    • Optus flex. free 7 day 'trial' on 4g plans

      • I need to port my number though and apparently porting doesnt work for esim

        • you have to use live chat

        • Ah yes, when through live chat you cant get the free offer. But you could go on the $1/day option for 1 day. If you 'cancel' the $1/day option you can still receive calls and texts on subsequent days.

  • +2

Kogan is cheaper if you are okay with reception issues. $99 for 120GB 365 Days. https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-prepaid-voucher-co…

    • Yes Kogan has gnerally been excellent value, but the Vodafone network is a letdown. Porting 2 phones from Kogan to Boost now. Telstra coverage plus 5G (even though it's capped at 150mbps) is worth the slightly higher $/GB rate.

  • Noooooo I just bought it for $200 from Coles last week but yet to activate ! Can I get a refund and order another one? Lol

  • Kogan also has $179 for 300gb at 365days plan.

Yeah last boost mobile sim not much working fast.

Or get the Kogan extra large 500gb at $199 at 365days plan.

  • Anyone had luck with just chatting with Boost support to get this applied to an existing number?

    • +1

they specifically told me today that they wouldn't. May be just bad luck or something, but just letting you know in case it helps.

      • +1

        Cheers, appreciate the help

  • From the website:

    12 month expiry
    All for use within Aus

140GB on activation for new customers. 130GB on next recharge. Activate and first recharge by 3 July.

From 4th July, recharge will change to $230 with 160GB. More info.

Makes it a bit unclear if it's not activated by 4th July - is there some extra fee payable?

    • I read that as, if you buy it after 4th July, it's more expensive and they're telling you now so you know. I could be wrong, I just assumed it meant that and didn't question it until you mentioned it.

  • +1

Just recharged online as an existing customer (via the app). $170 for 12 months and 130gb.
That's $30 off and the offer ends 17th of June.

    • Did your unused data roll over? I thought they weren't allowing this to be used as a recharge.

    • +1

How did you get the $170 recharge as I only see it as $200

      • +1

        Same

        • +1

Yeah I was expecting to pay $200. Logged onto the app. Selected recharge, selected pay by credit card, browsed to plan and it was $170 for 130 GB. I had 3 gb remaining, which wasn't rolled over. But when I log on today rather than having 130gb in my account, I have 150gb! (less than 5gb warning is still there from prior to recharge).

          See screenshots.

    • +1

Maybe this is a targeted offer? I am on a Boost 12mo (last day 19 June 2023) and I can only see 12mo 130GB for $200

      • I suspect he is calling a starter kit a recharge.
I'm on my third now, just get on the chat with boost and they can apply the new starter to your same number, no issues. Wouldn't pay over $170 and $20 cashback (~$140-150, still cheap for a year).

        • When did you do this last? Hearing that its trickier to get a rep that will do it for you now?

          • @JoJoker: End of December, activated end of Jan
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/745124

Haven't heard anything, check the previous threads I guess, heaps of people have got them to do it with no issues (and twice myself at least).

            • @G-rig: Good one. I've done it for 4 years in a row now for both my girlfriend and I, let's see how I go with one more!

              • @JoJoker: Yeh they are great, and Telstra 5g is a bonus.
Shouldn't have to go to a 2$ sim in between but always an option, just don't leave it to the last day. Id get on a different chat before that though, but never had an issue in 3y either.
