Office Chair Mats Recommendations?

I'm moving into a room with carpet and am looking for an office chair mat that doesn't crack and will last a decent period.

I've looked at:
* https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/762284 but seems a bit overpriced for what it is (an MDF board with fabric around it);
* tempered glass options but they seem extremely expensive ($300+; some even in the $1000s) - https://www.amazon.com.au/s?k=tempered+glass+chair+mat&i=off…

What has everyone else used?

  • Wow no chance I'd trust a glass one

I just had the hard plastic ones from Officeworks (I also have similar one from mydeal but don't recommend - cheaper sure but it was significantly thinner, and even started cracking during its first winter)

I got a couple from Officeworks three-odd years ago for myself and the bride. It would have been similar to this one (if not this one). Haven't had any problems.

  • Been using this one 4 days a week since 2020. Still going strong no cracks. Comes rolled up just takes a little work get it flat.
The type of chair matt will depend on if your on carpet or hardwood floors.

$33 now, ripped off I got it for $40.

    • Awesome, I'll have a look. Thanks! I don't mind if it's rolled, it's the cracking that gets me

  • Office chairs in offices are typically sitting on carpet- why would you need a mat for one?

It's hardwood floors that people buy mats for, in order to protect the flooring from hard plastic castor wheels.

Really, have you considered those same wheels can wear tracks into the carpet and also the soil from shoes rubbing up and down in the same place causing track marks on the carpet.

Been using one for years (though doesn't meet the specs the OP wants) and the carpet under it is in good shape, whereas partner didnt use one and its ingrained and worn and cant be restored.

Also office carpet is hard as nails, nothing like house carpet. Thats why top managers have couches in their offices, much softer than office carpet! 🤣

Every office I've worked in with carpet has had protectors and the protectors don't last forever.
I'd imagine they'd have to replace the carpet after 3+ years or at the end of the lease if protectors are not used.

The lifespan of the protector would be longer than the lifespan of the wear on my carpet. I know which is cheaper to replace.

  • I use this one from Ikea - https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/kolon-floor-protector-90176245/

Still going strong after 3 years of use.

    • Great, I'll have a look. So no cracks?

      • I have 2 of these in use and haven't experienced any cracks at all in the 3 years.

      • the ikea one is good

also the costco one is great as well

around $40 though. ive owned 6 different ones (they all lasted on wood)

        • I have the Costco ones and both mine and my sons have cracked! We are on carpet though

          • @GLO: you definitely get more flex on carpet for sure. its literally having the wheels trying to puncture it everytime you sit down

  • @DevlicK what did you end up getting?

Im needing to replace my 2x Costco onces as they have cracked.

    Keen for your reply.

Any anyone elses that for a thick one for plush carpet.

    Thanks

    • Ended up getting the one from Ikea. Pretty good so far and has a decent thickness and weight to it

      • Thanks,

I thought the Ikea ones were a bit small

        how thick is your carpet?

        • Not thick. I don't roll around in my chair a lot so it's sufficient for me.

  • Seeking a chair mat to go on carpet. Only reason I haven't purchase the Ikea is because they are a little small, and Costco I have heard not so great things. My current mat is a square and is 1170mm x 1525mm. Cant remember where I purchased it, but it is thick and has lasted many years.

Looking for something similar if possible, and hopefully not paying a kings ransom. Any suggestions appreciated.
