Stumbled upon this while looking into LED TV backlights.

Not sure if anyone is in the market for mood lighting but I thought this price was fairly decent. Ikea sell a similar thing (1 colour) at $139 and Philips sell a similar thing at $450.

These are sub $40 on eBay and at bargain stores

They tend not to have the IC and the whites are rubbish. Also, most of them are bluetooth only whereas this is wifi so can integrate into smart home set up more easily.

Had to look it up, so there you are:

An RGBIC strip light uses a built-in IC (Integrated Circuit) chip and, like an aurora in the sky, can simultaneously display multiple colors.

    • Agree. Bought a Casa Life for $49 from Aldi. Perfectly good. The color temperature is a bit warm. Seems to be the typical for cheaper ones.

Kmart sells for 65 that works with Wi-Fi and frankly better design
Without Wi-Fi model is like 25, OOS in a lot of places though.
    2 cents worth

Thanks! I think it is these right?

I actually didn't know this lol. For the more budget conscious this may be a better option.

Yep, bought one last week as a gift.
This is a better design in my opinion, The round base in the other one is not as compact as you would like, where as the right angle design one can sit quite close the wall.

        • That looks pretty nice. Do you know if it's rgbic or just rgb? Thanks

          • @daveyyy: the 69 (nice) dollar one would need to be IC style to support pixel control yea - the real question is individual or section control.

            • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: If the Kmart one is RGBIC, they've done a terrible job of marketing that feature.

I'd say it's likely NOT addressable colour customisation - more probably it's just some colour movement presets. Which tbh is good enough for me.

              • @andresampras: It's addressable to an extent. Not as fully customisable as say Govee.
I buy a lot of the Mirabella genio stuff, it's pretty decent.
I bought 2 for the house and another 2 for my son when they came out. They look great.
I can run them all through Smart life.
For other products Mirabella do a great job without breaking the bank like Govee and Philips.
Like I love the Govee aura lamp that never made it to Aus but no way was I looking at paying $150+ to import it
Mirabella make a version just as good that I went and bought 4 when it went on clearance at Bunnings fo $39 each.

Mirabella's pixel stuff is pretty good

  • These are just a smart LED strip in a housing, right?

    • +2

more or less yes, some might have rigid pcb instead of a strip - but the idea is the same

    • I mean so are bulbs really the components are the same, the bulbs have multiple LEDs in them too.

  • Kmart one is more of a comparison rather than Philips so with that in mind the kmart one is great and $69 then this is no deal

    • What makes Kmart a closer comparison to this than Philips to this?

      • Mirabella and Govee both smaller brands in comparison to Philips which may not seem like much for a light but when it comes to app support and general reliability I have found it to be. To be fair i don't have any Philips stuff anymore (had some in my old house)
Mirabella and Govee only have 1 yr warranty, Philips is 2yrs
Mirabella and Govee both max 1000lumens as far as i can tell. Philips is 1800 to 2550 depending on colour / white, this us a HUGE difference.

The 2 things they all share is they are around 1.4m high and are app controlled RGBIC lamps

        • +1

Damn I didn't know there was such a big lumen difference between the two. That alone makes me regret the choice a little….

The app support is definitely going to be worse on the Govee. The philips bridge is amazing and is even better than my LIFX stuff.

I just didn't think it would be worth triple the price…. I'll test out the Govee thing when I get it. Amazon have a pretty good return policy if it ends up being a dud.

          Thanks for the info.

          • @MrMoo: Oh i wouldnt dare pay that for the Philips, they have come down to 300-350 odd before iirc and i think they have a buy one get one half price deal on right now… but yeah! Im also pretty sure i've seen the Govee in person and it wasnt bright enough for what i wanted. The philips is super bright in comparison and the homekit compatibility is also a nice selling point as i've moved away from google.. (not a huge home bridge fan and still freshly returned to the apple eco system) For the money i would buy the Kmart one if i was happy with the brightness i'm just not willing to spend that much on the Philips yet

I bought a lamp similar to this recently.

    • it's dim as hell (even though it's rated at 1000lms). Due to the combination of the diffuser strip and the fact it's pointed towards a wall corner (and usually only a few cms away from it)

    • having a tall, black stick in the corner of the room is actually pretty ugly.

    • having it further out from the wall produces slightly more light but looks even worse

    • the colours are a stupid gimmick

    • the app and/or remote are cheap and nasty

    • I'm guessing you don't like it. :)

      • +3

dim, ugly, stupid, gimmick, cheap, nasty…..

        what gave it away? :)

    • Thanks for this!
