TV Advice: under $500 40"-50"

My old Kogan TV of 16 years has finally died on me, farewell old friend, you went well!.

I'm looking to get a new TV for the bedroom, this isn't the primary TV for the house so not too fussed on all the bells and whistles. I was thinking Kogan again, but I hear the quality nowadays isn't as good as what I lucked out with 16 years ago, especially on the cheaper ones.

Looking for something in the 40"-50" range at up to $500. What do you all recommend in this price bracket?

Prefer 4k, regarding smart Tv functionality I already have a NVIDIA shield which I will be connecting to it, so don't care about what smarts the Tv comes with, so long as I can turn on the TV and get it straight to the nivida shield using only the shield remote I'm happy.

I'v been comparing the Kogan's, TCL's, and FFALCON's of this price range. Who has recently purchased in this range and what are your thoughts?

Treat yourself to a nicer Hisense. Probably the best bang for buck TVs out there.

You'll certainly notice a big improvement coming from trash tier panels.

    • The problem with the Hisense is you get stuck with the terrible Vidaa OS and its limited apps. I have a Hisense Q7 that I have been very happy with (other than having to disable the horrendous motion smoothing) as my main tv and found I had to by a Google TV dongle to make it tolerable. This is why I went TCL for my bedroom tv (C635 43") at the $500 mark, as it has Google TV built in. Have been very happy with it in the month or so I have had.

      • He has a shield so he's covered. Agree the OS is ass.

        • Ah I missed that. Still don't like supporting Hisense and their use of inferior panels and OS for the Australian Market. Also Viida has some weird bugs on my Q7, like having to disable fastboot in order to stop the motion smoothing from re-enabling even though it says it is off.

  • FB marketplace. Get a brand name

    • I was thinking that, but I want warranty

Why? Warranty and returns would be far more important on the cheap TV's than the more expensive ones

Sorry, but don't feel the need to explain why I want warranty, a bit of an obvious one that one

@whitepuma: Yet your old TV lasted 16 years?

            Alrighty then…

@spackbace: Are you using my 1 instance of a tv lasting 16 years as proof that all TV's will last that long?

I'v seen TV's die within their warranty period, and others last for long after it.

In the end of the day it's my personal preference that I get something with warranty, even if it means paying a bit more.

You don't need to agree with it, but you don't have to get snarky.

Try a bit harder to be a good ozbargainer

I am, that's why I made a good suggestion of getting a brand name within budget. The UI and general use of a Sony/LG/Hisense/Samsung etc etc, shits all over the cheap brands. Have an Eko TV here bought new and I'd much prefer the 10yo Sony that's in the other room.

                • @spackbace: i agree, prefer brand name. But i prefer warranty aswell.

Re UI, i'm not too fussed, i have a nvidia shield that i will be connecting up to it. So long as i can turn it on with the shield remote via CEC, and have it auto recognise and go to the shield channel, then that ticks my boxes as far as UI & UX

Out of the three you're looking at, TCL would be your safest choice

  • What was the size of your old Kogan?

I haven't heard that the quality has gone downhill. I thought it was the same quality as before or slightly better.

"I haven't heard that the quality has gone downhill. I thought it was the same quality as before or slightly better."

It's always been shit. Today it's no shittier than before when it was just shit.. so at least it hasn't gone downhill :D

    • 42” full hd lcd.

Back from the days when it was plasma vs lcd, also back when you got to choose between 720p, 1080i & 1080p.

Back then I paid $1500, whilst the Sony equivalent was over $3000

      • Todays Kogan TVs in that size are of the same quality as the FFalcons. I was thinking your old TV was larger than 46".

        • Yeah back when i got mine 42" was about the biggest you could get without getting into commercial or into the ridiculous money figures. I remember at the same time Samsung was selling a 60" screen for $60k at the samsung store in burwood.

I read a few reviews and the 40" units from TCL and Hisense were not positive, but the 43s and 50s were. We had a Bauhn, and am looking at a TV similar to you. This previous post of mine may help. Pay a little extra for a unit with hopefully not many glitches. :)
