Looks like Officeworks are clearing out the M1 Mac Mini. If only I had enough money to buy one for myself… I’ll have to live vicariously through all your comments instead

you can get the newer m2 version with the same ssd capacity of 256gb for $795 straight from apple here. they don't check for student id.

  • Is there a SSD issue with M2 Mac mini? So move on and wait for M3.

    • speed is nerfed for the 256gb version yes
not sure if Apple will continue with the NAND packaging in the M3 though

    • It's to do with the newer SSD so M3 won't fix that issue, unless Apple decided to pay for a more expensive 256GB SSD.

The M1 machines had paired 128GB drives, the M2 a single 256GB. The paired drives aren’t faster on their own, but paired they are.
        Real world you can’t tell.

        • Sustained write is the issue which got picked up, and we know youTubers care about that due to video work.

It was cost saving from Apple. More cost effective NAND chips.

However, in heavy I/O test, the new SSD's I/O is inferior. It's cost saving from Apple. Newer NANDs are optimised for higher storage size. That said, if heavy I/O is really important, M1 with 512GB SSD won't be sufficient.

I'd save my pennies and go for 16GB RAM, M1 or M2. I have an M1 8GB MM, and it regally chokes. Just had a quick look ay Activity Monitor, I have 9 apps open with a couple of dozen browser tabs and I'm using 27GB of the 32GB in my MacBook Pro M1 Max.

      Regally chokes?

"You have selected REGICIDE. If you know the name of the King or Queen being murdered, press one."

    • Do any of those apps happen to have "Adobe" in their names? I think most people not using memory hungry apps would be fine with the 8GB. If you do Adobe or other similar apps then yeah you'll ant more memory and storage, though USB storage with the mini is easier than with the MacBooks.

      • No Adobe, VM Ware running a Debian 5.8GB, Safari 4.77GB are top.

        • I sometimes notice Safari using all of my 8GB. I wish Safari had its own task manager so I could see which tab was actually doing it.

    • How are you finding the storage? can you get by with 256GB?

      • I use a NAS, so storage is not an issue. If you get an M2 the storage is slower than the M1 unless you go for a larger drive.

  • This isn’t a deal.
    Try m2 base education discount.

  • guys wait until 06/06/2023 wwdc
should have something new coming out

    • New M3 Mac Studio I'm hoping…
