I use this AX 55 as an Access Point for a VR wireless setup (pico 4) It does this very well.
The Asus app is handy.
I paid about the same price, these go on sale often.
If I have this already, what's the cheapest way to get aimesh? Just buy another?

I had the 59U and returned it. It does work as an AiMesh node but does not support binding (i.e. forcing a device to connect to the node or the master). Phones and PCs should work it out themselves and connect to the stronger signal but I have had little success with getting IoT devices to choose the better signal. It will not work as a master either. There were a couple of other features not supported but the inability to bind was the killer for me.
The AX55 does both those things. Neither of them are supported by Merlin if you want the additional firmware features.

Anyone able to give some guidance on if this would be significantly better than my isp provided modem (Technicolor TG789vac v2)? Have been noticing lag on games, streaming etc and cant tell if its a router issue or just my ISP (aussie BB).
Yes. Used to get really bad cloud gaming when I was solely using my ISP modem. Put this behind the modem and cleared up a lot of my issues.
Yeah I bought one of these a month ago, and the wifi signal is so much stronger than my crappy netcomm modem/router. You'll need to have a modem or fttp to use it though. I might buy another one to setup a mesh node
