Origin Energy Discount (Minimum 12 Month Term) + Bonus $150 Bill Credits on Origin Go Variable Plans (Excludes WA & VIC)

620

Hi ladies and gents, Origin Energy has just released a new friends and family offer (details below) for electricity and gas - I am an employee, hence how I have this information. Hopefully this is of benefit to some during these expensive times.

Edit: This applies to new AND existing customers.

This below rates apply to each fuel. You do not need to accept both to be eligible for the rates. The $150 is only for electricity and doesn't require gas.

Please do not contact me via DM or request any further details. I do not work in sales so cannot answer your questions.

State Elec Gas
VIC 26% 17%
NSW 11% & $150 credit 10%
QLD 10% & $150 credit 9%
SA 11% & $150 credit 9%
ACT 35% & $150 credit 35%
WA N/A 33%

This URL gives you access to the offers above. I do suggest you compare any rates and fees with your existing providers as I do not work in sales, so cannot confirm what other providers currently offer.

*Credit offer: Not available in Victoria or WA. Offer available to residential electricity customers who sign up to an Origin Go Variable plan as part of the Origin Family and Friends offer. Offer starts 22 May and ends 30 June 2023 (Offer Period). One credit per electricity account per Offer Period. Credit applied to customer’s electricity account after 1 July 2023 if the electricity account the customer signed up to is still active.

After 1 July, if you’re still on the same electricity plan we’ll apply $150 credit to your account. You’ll be able to see it on your account balance in My Account, or on your next bill after 1 July.

    hey OP
as a side is there any way you could get me on the origin energy EV plan?

    • +3

Hey mate, I'll see if I can find someone in the department and see what they can do. Bare with me.

      • Any updates on this?

  • Thanks for the info, my personal experience with origin is you can also get a good deal (perhaps even better) from the retentions team, but you have to go through the song and dance of cancelling.
I think my current NSW discount on electricity is 19% by such means but I can’t remember exactly.

    • +1

Yeah, I've no idea how it is now, but I remember back in the day (2016) when leaving just to get a call from the retention team (from any provider) was the best way to save $$$. With how messed up the wholesale prices are now, not sure if that's still the case.

    • Does it work on embedded network?

  • Rates still higher than Sumo in my distribution area (Crows Nest, NSW)

    • +1

Thanks for posting! I encourage everyone else to do similar to save time checking, or help others find the cheapest supplier for their area

    • +1

maybe higher but churn and get the credit and then go back to sumo and get the credit there again

  • Is there a point to switching to a new provider on a Variable rate plan? Aren't they all getting increased July 1?

    • +4

While I don't know what the rates will change to (as I'm no where near the level of having those discussions), it's a free $150 credit in applicable states. I've signed up to this offer myself for that reason alone. It's no lock in so no harm in doing the same imo

  • Can this combine with the 40000 points offer from everyday rewards? Thanks

    • +1

Unfortunately not - Already checked if I could do this too haha (assuming you mean 10k for joining and 30k for internet?)

Edit for clarity: You can still get 30,000 points for the internet plans. You cannot stack this offer with the current 10,000 points offer for signing up however.

      • +1

No I mean the offer as mentioned in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/776359
25000 points for electricity and 15000 points for gas sign-up. Thanks

        • Ah, thanks for that. Nope - Different rates - The ones tied to that offer are higher. This offer cannot be combined with any other elec or gas offers.

          • @BAE: Ok I see. Thank you for clarification!

            • @fornever: Take up that Rewards points offer +$150 credit for min 30d for points & switch to a different provider or rate.
              That's what I'm doing.
Unfortunately this offer ends in 29d. And switching retailer takes 2 weeks (cooling off period). So can't add this offer.

              • +1

@INFIDEL: Just to add, this offer also applies to existing customers - Will edit my post to advise this.

                • @BAE: For those who already joined up with Origin in that Deal, they would be existing customers.

Would qualify for that Deal's benefits by staying 30+d, & then could move over to this Deal before it ends. Not available to those recently or yet to signup.

  • +2

Nah - after Origin charged me a daily solar charge just to have solar panels for 3 years that no other company charged - I'm done with them.

Not to mention having to differentiate between Origin Energy and Origin Gaming in my emails - Too much for me.

    • That would be even worse around State of Origin time

    • I remember hearing a story about a mother calling up furious that we were charging her random payments. No one knew what was going on til a gamer stated "Origin is also a gaming service". Lol'd

  • +3

    Hi BAE,
Have the prices already been adjusted to account for the increases which will occur in NSW from July 1st or are the rates that I'm currently seeing going to increase from July 1st?

    • Hey mate, I assume no as I've not seen any correspondence about a rate change. I'm trying to double check for you. It's no lock in however, so no stress in getting the credit and leaving after if rates skyrocket. Will update as soon as someone gets back to me :)

  • thanks for the heads up OP, appreciate it! cheers

  • i currently pay peak 25.08c and supply 92.4c with sumo for elec

doing the raw maths i would pay $2 more with origin, plus the $150 bonus, for gas its an increase of $27, so sounds like a no brainer to me with the credit being applied

  • Thanks OP. Good saving for me. Signed up.

  • Amazing deal. Thanks for posting

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks OP!

  • Hi OP, im already on the exact plan but with higher rate. Is it possible to switch to this rate or do i need to change plan and swap back?

    • Hey mate, no issues in using this link to sign up to this F&F offer - Be it new or existing :)

  • Will 150$ credit be applied if you go for only the electricity ?

    • That's correct. Will update my post to note this.

  • weird - when i put address in, it only shows gas when I have electricity and gas with red energy. Any ideas why OP?

  • Since $150 is always nice deal, please don't forget the plan is under 'variable' rates, which means they will definitely go up after 1 July and they may go up again in the future.

  • I'm in an apartment with Origin but on Embedded Network Electricity the link checks my address and allows me to sign up for variable.

Is there going to be any issues for me to be on variable instead of ENE? I've never looked at prices before because I was told it is locked and I cannot change it.

    • Hi there, this is outside my knowledge/scope. From what I know, embedded networks cannot be changed. However, I suggest you do call up and double check.

  • OP, I'm currently with Origin on the Origin Basic Plan. However, I'm on the old 49c feed-in tariff for solar.

If I change to this Origin Go plan, will I still keep the feed-in tariff rate of 49c?

    • Hi there, from my knowledge it should seamlessly carryover as the name tied to the address/supply isn't changing (you're only updating the plan), which is what the Govt. rebate focuses on. However, as I'm not part of sales I cannot confirm if anything has changed recently re regulation/the Govt. rebate

    • +1

Add your address and it will tell you your solar tariff.
It should keep your 49c as it goes by when your system was installed not what plan you are on.

    • Have you tried checking by putting you address in?

  • +1

Hi OP. Please forgive my ignorance, but what are the referral links listed in your post for? Is that an additional credit on top of the $150 bonus?

  • +1

Will this stack with the $100 referral?

    • Looking to hear too

    • No, I signed up and didn't have options to add a referral code. When i went over to the site with the referral link, couldn't see friends and family deal.

      • +1

It seems the referral bonus ended after 1 Apr 2020.

  • Hey ozbargainers ..if I get the $100 referral for joining , will that void this deal ? Cheere

  • -1

I only came here to laugh at "Origin Energy Energy Discount" before its revised (Origin Energy Discount or Origin Energy Electricity / Gas Discount?)
and to laugh at the revision fight

  • I’m thinking of bundling with this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/769652

  • I have signed this family offer, however, origin cannot find my meter and sent me an email to call back.

After I call back, the hotline cannot award this offer with $150 credit and said I signed it via the phone.

  • Hi Rep, is it just the $150 that is not available to VIC & Wa? The discounted rates are available? Thanks

  • Good deal Op. Thanks!

  • 5c feed-in and $0.5549 peak rates makes this a total non-starter, even with the $150 bonus.

    • Yeah + solar meter fee + higher daily charge + poor FIT makes this a no go for me (bris qld). A lot better off with nectr

  • Thanks. I signed up last week for the $150 offer but this is a few cents cheaper for supply and rates so I switched to this one.

  • How long after 1/7 will the $150 be credited?

    • Just did the sign up form online. Says you'll see it in your balance on the app on 1st July or on the next bill that comes after then.

  • +1

What are the rates after 1 July? Having trouble finding them

  • Thanks

  • Thanks Op!

My old contract with 19% discount had finished a couple months back and when I was comparing with other companies on the energy made easy, I was unable find anything much cheaper then the new plan I'm on so have remained on origin.

This deal is a decent saving for me!

    Sydney,
    Endeavour energy with CL1

  • You know you're getting old when you get excited by deals like these :D Thanks OP! Tariffs at my place in QLD slightly cheaper however daily charge is 9c per day more… can't complain about the $150 credit.

  • Will the F&F Electricity rates stay the same after July 1 or will they increase ?

    • I believe this is a variable rate offer, but best to check yourself to make sure.

    • They are going up, as this is a variable offer.
I'm leaving Origin as the new price in my QLD area will now be 28.822kWh and the daily supply charge is going up to 120.593c.

      • Still better then AGL QLD SEQ Plans from 1 July - 32.692kWh and the daily supply charge 132.462c including GST for both
Plus AGL will no long pay a Solar retailer FiT if you’re on the .44c scheme.

“If you are eligible for a government scheme feed-in tariff (FiT), we will continue to pay you that FiT, but you will no longer receive a retailer FiT in addition to the government FiT”

        I’m moving to Origin

        • Wow, that's a big increase with AGL. I've signed up to try Nectr, with locked in prices for 12 months.
          23.98kWh and daily supply 0.99c
I don't have solar, so I didn't look into, what they're offering for that.

    • +1

Just got the email stating that they are increasing. Daily supply increased 10% and General increased 23%.

  • Then there is a big hike of price from 1 july!

  • What are the rates from 1 July 2023?

  • I'm on the 12c FIT uncapped plan until October
My Origin costs are changing on 1 July to
    General: 32.043
    Supply: 133.991
    Solar meter charge: 8.526
    FIT: 12c uncapped

Even after the huge price rise, the current plan works out better for me than this one.

I have a 10kw solar system and export about 27kw/h per day so the highest FIT works best for me

    I haven't found anything cheaper

OVO EV Plan (assuming there isn't a demand charge like their other plans) works out the same based on my usage, but with a $190 welcome credit. Their prices are changing on 1st August though and not sure what they will be.

Have others found this the same, that even with the massive Origin pricing increase there still isn't a cheaper option for larger solar export usage whether at Origin or anywhere else?

  • I dont know if you switch then they increase the rate since its Variable then not much the point

    • You’re making the assumption that only OE will increase in July.

  • +1

Signed up yesterday and today got the email that the prices will increase by 20% from July 1. I will look at other options after the first month is up but FYI:

    Controlled Load - 19.371 c kwh
    General - 36.806c kwh
    Daily - 95.832c kwh

    • Bait and switch lol

      • Its as expected really though. All prices are going up July 1st. It just sucks that there is no way to find out what those rises will be from July 1st if you arent a current customer and weighing up if its worth switching to them purely for the $150 credit.

        • yeah most providers seem to be shit like that - I have to give credit where it is due though as AGL are one of the only ones i've seen that are advertising their current rates and their new rates post-July-1

    • +1

You need to ask yourself, whether you’re still winning with only 20% increase as compared to 30%-40% increases seen at other retailers. I’m sure you signed up knowing that rates are variable.

Secondly your 20% increase is on a lower rate whereas the 30%-40% increases with other retailers is on higher rate.

Lastly, you also get $150 credit that you wouldn’t have if you hadn’t taken action to change.

  • great. sign

  • So just to confirm, as per the OP text, this is also available to existing customers to sign up/transfer over to? Do you also get to keep your existing gov bonus FIT for solar eg QLD's 44c one?

  • I have just got my origin every day rewards points from the other deal. this looks like better rates so assume the discount will carry across on the new rates.
looks like if i change to this I will lose my $150 i currently will get on the 1st of july but i will also get $150 from this deal and cheaper rates…
sounds like its worth a shot.

Does anyone in sa have this plan already and have the new rates? I have the new rates for the everyday rewards one. is it just the same but with the discount applied?
    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/245090/104729/screensh…

    • Interesting, shoulder rate is cheaper than off-peak rate after 1 July.

  • Can I add a internet for the bundle saving after or it is only offered during sign up?

  • +1

Anyone received their $150 credit yet?

    • +1

No, and probably won't see it until the next bill.

    • No credit yet. Probably won’t see it until September when the next bill is due.

Meanwhile seen cheaper rates elsewhere, not sure if it’s worth the wait for the $150 credit.

      • Exactly same thought here, their rates are quite expensive not sure its worth the gamble 😊

    • +1

      received mine today

    • Received the $150 credit today.

  • +2

Got my credit today. Good deal. One of the best rates I found as well (i'm in SA). Anyone found any better?

    Daily Supply
    95.634 c/day

    Usage charges
    Off-peak 29.722 c/kWh
    Peak 50.226 c/kWh
    Shoulder 24.728 c/kWh
    6c/kWh Feed in

    • I just had a quick look on Energy Made Easy and with time of use Lumo looks cheapest:

      Daily supply charge 92.57 cents/day

      Peak Off-Peak Shoulder
      43.12c/kWh 22.33c/kWh 17.42c/kWh

      Solar feed-in
      3 cents/kWh exported

Ovo were cheapest for me in SA on a single rate, but Lumo comes up cheapest for you. It's possible OVO increase the rates next month anyway.

      • Thanks, not much feedback here or whirlpool about Lumo but i'll give them a go. Just signed up now. Thanks for the free month of power Origin.

        • +1

I've been with Lumo twice before, I didn't have any issues, so can't say how good they are but they are a pretty big company. At the end of the day they are just billing you, so it doesn't really matter unless something goes wrong. You get access to their rewards program as well (same with Origin).

          • @hamza23: Wonder how long before they change their rates, seems they haven't updated it on 1 July like all the others. Lucky changing power companies is relatively pain free and near instant.

            • @1jwoz: Hmm yeah, it does state on the energy fact sheet that the rates are:

              Effective from
              1 Jul 2023

However as you say, the rates are the same as they were in June, so it's possible they do a price increase Aug 1.
