Some good prices on ASUS networking gear. The star of the show here is the Asus ZenWiFi Hybrid XP4 Wireless-AX1800 System 2 Pack for $200, which normally costs $299 on Computer Alliance and other computer stores.

It has a 64-bit Quad core Processor, 512MB of RAM and USB 3.2 Gen 1X1

ASUS ZenWiFi XD6s Dual Band Mesh WiFi 6 System 2 Pack is also going for $349, and you can probably get an even lower price by price matching it at Officeworks as they sell for $397 there

To compare the specs between the XD6s and the XP4, you can use this link

Update: The deal for XP4 Mesh Router has expired.

    Nice, the AX-53u supports OpenWRT.

  • Just paid $397 for the XD6. It's a great piece of kit though. Unsure of difference with XD6S.

    • The XD6S has 1 LAN port instead of 3 and 128MB flash instead of 256MB, also comes with a wall mount.

Otherwise functionally the same it seems.

      • Ah, I see. Good to have the extra ports I reckon. Not sure whether the extra flash memory makes any difference.

      • Thanks for the heads up!
Almost ordered the XD6S assuming it was like any normal router - and wouldn't have been able to connect my NAS while using the cabled backhaul.

See if Officeworks still has the XD6….

    • Does it have a separate 2.4ghz network?

      • +1

Yes. You can merge or separate. I separate, plus I run a guest network for devices I don't quite trust.

  • Any thoughts re Ax-55 vs ax-53u as an aimesh node? No wired backhaul

    • They don't support wired backhaul?

  • Currently, running 3x Deco M5 in a 400 sqm2 house (and one of the units upstairs is wired to the main unit downstairs), is it worth upgrading to ASUS ZenWiFi?

    • You can do more advanced networking things with Asus. Not everyone needs them though. Have a play around with the Asus demo. Do you have any devices with Wi-Fi 6?

      • Just our phones? Out nbn is also only 50/20 don't know if that matters or not.

        • Purchase the Asus if you want to use something like DDNS and a VPN server/client at the router level. If not save your money and get a couple more years out of the Deco.

            @Twix: Great advice, thank you!

  • I've been having some bad experiences with Asus gear for a while now.

Had 2x Ac68u set up using aimesh, I would get frequent dropouts from the satellite device often requiring a powercycle to reconnect.
I put up with this system for a year but dropouts were getting more frequent in the last few weeks.

Upgraded to the XD6…I only lasted 2 days…the dropouts were considerably more frequent and mobile devices would take some time to load webpages on what seemed like everytime i picked up my phone.

I decided to jump ship and try the netgear Orbi AX1800…which has been functioning perfectly.
Sucks because I really loved the extra features of the Asus…the Orbi UI is complete trash and cannot split the bands.

But for reliability…its a night and day difference to my old asus setup.

    • But if that was because of Asus, would others not also have this issue?
I have had the XD6 for 5 days (not exactly long), but it has been rock solid. There are 24 devices connected at this moment.

I believe what you're saying, but with technology like this, there can be any amount of factors. For instance, perhaps the Asus was using a channel that had interference?

      • +1

Yeah, i know people that have had rock solid asus setups..my setup with just a single 86U was perfect…

Asus aimesh is known to be pretty buggy and difficult to troubleshoot…theres alot posted on user forums about this….im just one of the unlucky ones.

And you are right, theres so many factors…I was just posting about my experience if it helps anyone that the Orbi may be an answer for others experiencing crappy asus mesh issues.

^ this. I run a AX86U primary + AX86S secondary + AC88U secondary in a double brick, 2-storey house and was getting wifi dropouts and low throughput with my AiMesh. I added TP-Link AV2000 Powerline at each of the secondaries for wired backhaul and it fixed the issues.

        • +1

Wired backhaul was going to be my next step and most prob would have fixed the issue, but straight out of the box, the Orbi did what my asus couldnt do.

          • @amityaaron: Yeah, nice. Probably worked out cheaper for you too. I wished I had done better research and gotten the XP4 set. Would’ve been cheaper than my current set up.

            • +2

@m00seTheC0wSnake: the orbi ax1800 is 36% off or so on amazon at the moment, so was definitely a more cost effective option.

I really wanted to go down the Unifi path….but my request was not approved by the wife.

  • What product has WiFi 6, Mesh and is also a modem (for NBN)? I only recently got NBN after being on Fibre ….

      https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/deco/deco-x20-dsl…

AX1800 VDSL Whole Home Mesh WiFi 6 System. Note that you only need a modem if you are on FTTN / FTTC. FTTP and HFC users don't need to buy a VDSL modem.

      • Ohhhh!! I have HFC so a router will suffice then! Thanks! ✌🏼

        • Any of these Asus routers are compatible with HFC.

Don't purchase the TP-Link Deco X20-DSL modem/router combo variant for HFC. Get the TP-Link Deco X20 router for HFC.

      • +1

Not sure thats correct. FTTN and FTTB need a modem. Whereas FTTC, FTTP and HFC have the NBN device acting as a modem…?

        • +1

I should have said you only need to "buy a modem" if you are on FTTN and FTTC. With other technologies you are provided a modem free of charge.

          • +1

@scrimshaw: Sorry, we might be getting wires crossed but, FTTN and FTTC - FTTN requires a modem, FTTC doesn't (as you're provided through the NBN connection device).

FTTP, FTTC, HFC and Fixed wireless - NBN device provided as modem - therefore you only need a router.

FTTB and FTTN - modem and router are both required (either single unit or two separate)

@deed03: I see, thanks for clarifiying. I had assumed Fiber to the Curb required a VDSL modem due to the existence of copper, when actually it uses a NBN Connection Device.

              • @scrimshaw: FTTC uses the nbn NCD VDSL2 modem with ethernet out and reverse power for the nbn DPU equipment. Most of nbn's DPU are located in underground pits. You can't use a regular VDSL2 modem to power the DPU.

    • Check what kind of nbn you have here. Is it FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP, HFC, fixed wireless, satellite?

  • If I connected a simple switch such as https://www.tp-link.com/au/business-networking/unmanaged-swi… to the LAN port of the ASUS ZenWiFi XD6s, would I still be able to use the wired backhaul option via one of the switch ports?

    • My understanding is the ZenWiFi XD6s has 1 WAN and 1 LAN (unlike the XD6 which has 1 WAN and 3 LAN). If you use wired backhaul, you would connect the ethernet via the WAN on the satellite. You still have the LAN to connect a switch. It should be similar to the XD4.

  • Im on nbn fttp, can i get XD6s as my router and get a ethernet switch since im also running 5 cables to my old ac3100 that i want to replace?
