What Are The Advantages of A Cellular iPad?

I am about to purchase an iPad and wondering what is the advantage of wifi and cellular, rather than just wifi?

Imagine using your mobile phone in flight mode everywhere, relying on Wi-Fi. Now imagine you turn off flight mode and you can use cellular data.

  • +4

So when you take the iPad out and about you can still post deals!

  • +2

It avoids having to hotspot all the time when you are away from WiFi.

  • +4

Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models include a GPS chip, so even if you're hotspotting from your phone while on the road your mapping and nav apps will work fine.

  • +5

Get cellular if you'll be using your iPad regularly away from wifi, don't want to bother with hot spotting from your phone and are prepared to pay for a sim, or if you want to use your iPad for navigation (Wifi-only iPads don't have GPS, are generally ok at determining your location, but not accurate enough for navigation)

And from this day forward the iPad with cellular will be commonly referred to as the iPam.

  • +10

The cellular version comes with a key to open the SIM tray which can be easily lost.

GPS is the main one that is overlooked. If you want to use any mapping or nav apps that need GPS, you need to get the mobile aka CelLuLar version. Of course you also then get the option to use mobile networks when away from wifi if you have a plan.

  • if you frequently use the data on your iPad it is worth getting the cell version. If you are only use it once in a while - consider tethering. iPhone+iPad combination works pretty neat for me.

    • iPad WiFi = iPod touch
    • iPad WiFi + Cellular = iPhone
  • Of course it's own internet connection.

We only have a wifi iPad and also have a iPhone.

It's cumbersome to turn on hot spot each time, however, I believe that my iPad automatically connects to my iPhone via bluetooth to use data.

So if you own an iPhone, I wouldn't bother with Cellular. Plus saves having to pay for a separate data only SIM.

  • An added point to the cellular function: added security.

You can track it’s location with its cellular connection, wifi only model needs to connect to wifi to do so.

    • Is this really that important? From what I've read the Cops don't usually give a shit even if you can serve the thieves up to them on a platter using locate my device and confronting the thieves yourself usually results in a reported stab wound on the 6pm news.

  • Never to this day seen anyone using cellular data on an iPad or smartwatch. I stupidly paid extra for a cellular iPad in 2012. Never again.

    • +1

      We've yet to meet 🫠

      I always buy cellular iPads.

      • Out of curiosity more than anything else, if you were looking to cut expenses would you be in the position to tether your mobile instead of using cellular from the iPad directly or do you have a specific use case that needs to be from this type of iPad?

        • +2

No, because then my mobile would run out of battery fast. Or my mobile screen might be broken. It was why I bought a cellular one in the first place a decade ago (my mobile was playing up) and now on my third one.

    • Never to this day seen anyone using cellular data on an iPad or smartwatch

I did just pick up a Galaxy Watch4 with LTE and have set that up with LTE. The reason is that I can go for runs or leave the house and still have a way to contact people or pay for things.

  • I am new to iPads, only have an old samsung tablet and a prepaid mobile. I upgraded the samsung tablet but never used the new one, its still in its box. Been paying it off for 3 years. Am starting fresh as an alternative to my large heavy laptop I cant take anywhere. Need a complete alternative device, hoping to find out ,my password today to the NBN so I can have lots of data. Foxtel is ending my cable TV and said I wont get free to air TV on it anymore. A technician is coming today to help me change the box to the new IQ. But I wont have TV channels. Might have to buy a seperate TV. Because the new Foxtel needs an antenna or something. So I may have to watch TV on the apps for awhile.

    • +3

Maybe you should take the Samsung tablet out of the box and either:

      a) try it out rather than buying a whole new device
      b) sell it

You could also consider a light laptop like a M1, Gram, or other ultrabook style device if the only issue is size.

,my password today to the NBN

I'm going to assume you mean wifi password. Generally, these are just on printed on the bottom of ISP provided modems and sometimes even have a QR code you can scan.

never used the new one, its still in its box. Been paying it off for 3 years

    Gold!

  • A bit of good news, the Telstra/Foxtel technician came, plugged in my new landline handset, , fixed the antenna, installed the new box, gave me my password. Hes just finishing up, and I have all the channels. Not quite yet because hes still working, but looks promising. Something good for a change, might leave a 5 star review

    • +1

might leave a 5 star review

      That makes sense. Cheers.

  • Merged from Confused by Salesman at Harvey Norman about iPad - Help Please

I bought my iPad today at Harvey Norman and got the same salesman as the other day.

I chose the non cellular one. He still is adamant I can only use a data sim, but others have said you can use a phone sim. I have an old Samsung tablet that receives SMS. I want to take my number over to iPad. Can I do this?

    • +19

If you chose NON cellular as you say, then your only choice is WiFi.

    • -2

You went from android to Apple …. is everything OK, Pam?

      • -4

If you dont have an answer than why comment

        • +8

          Because it's a public forum.

          • -2

@kerfuffle: I asked a question, not for any snarky remarks

            • -2

@screensaver: Well then don't post on a public forum if you don't want snarky remarks. Dunno why you keep coming back to this place if you're always constantly criticising the community.

              • +1

@kerfuffle: Just because its a public forum is NO excuse for snarky remarks

                • @screensaver: It's a public forum and it's not my fault you interpreted it as snarky when all I was doing was merely stating a fact.

Why do you always act like everyone has it out for you?

                  • -5

@kerfuffle: There is NO excuse for bullying others and it is NOT and will never be acceptable

                    • @screensaver: Sorry, where was I bullying you? By giving you the answers that you wanted to your questions below?

                      • -2

@kerfuffle: by defending the acceptability of bullying

                        • +1

@screensaver: And where did I defend the acceptability of bullying? I don't think bullying is cool either, but you're making a mountain out of a molehill here.

                        • +3

@screensaver: 1: You are the one being snarky

2: Like..wtf are you actually on about with all the bullying JUNK. Are you for real?

                          3: Jeebus loves you

4: Who on earth buys a no sim device and then expects to use mobile data!!!

This is the internet..put on your big boy pants

                        • +1

@screensaver: Don't worry about responding to these hater comments. Their plan is to piss people off until you lose your cool and then report you to the ozb police. They get right off on confrontation, helps them sleep.

                          • +2

@Poor Ass: No one made you swear at other people in a crass and offensive manner. You brought that on yourself; don't go blame others that you can't behave appropriately here.

(Context: Poor Ass is just bitter he got put in the Penalty Box for his own poor ass attitude)

                          • @Poor Ass: Yes there is a group here that have been on here for years and seem to think they own it by having smart comments every time and then when someone pulls them up on it they all gang up on them just as screensaver said BULLYS it really does not take much to amuse small minds.

        • +5

'cause I'm concerned about anyone who switches from android to Apple

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: It's so they can get the apple sticker to put on their car and park in disabled zones, and drive at 15k below the speed limit.

            • @BewareOfThe Dog: ….. and drive with their high beams on a sunny day

        • +1

          Why downgrade?
          Lol

      • +8

        is everything OK, Pam?

It was later revealed that Pam is not ok

        • +2

I know, right ! Seems like dealing with HN sales peeps can be quite stressful so I'm gonna just leave things here & see what's happenin' elsewhere on OzB

    • +10

If you got non-cellular then no sim will work.

    • +1

iPads only receive iMessages, not SMS. Even with a cellular model.

You can technically use a data SIM … By using it from your phone as a hotspot.

    • -1

Can I use just my nbn password and no plan or data SIM

      • +3

Well when you're at home, sure. When you're out and about, no. That's why you either hotspot from your phone … Or buy a cellular iPad

      • +1

Yes, to connect at your home only.
There is no 4g/5g on your tablet so when you are away from home there is no sim/data plan you can connect to. It is wifi only.

If you are say at a library or a coffee shop that has free wifi, you can connect to that.

    • +1

but others have said you can use a phone sim.

      Who has said this?

      • a few people did, but at the time I was going to buy cellular. I ended up buying non cellular, Probably made a mistake

        • +1

No one on this forum said that

        • +1

Just hot spot off your phone if you're out and about.
When you're at home just use your nbn wifi.

    • Was there any issues with your $250 HN gift card?

      • no but he lied to me about upgrading. He told me that if I bought the product care plan Icould get a full credit on the old model, turns out thst not true. It has to have a fault, so I am refunding that tomorrow

        • -3

Of course, it needs a fault and that's common sense Brad/Pam/Karen being an iPad, it needs to be under ,$400 for in store replacement. Above that , and it will need to be assessed. If the fault is intermittent like, drops out after 45 minutes on home wifi, it will must likely be a credit, and you can buy another overpriced iPad, or a galaxy tablet. Do you understand Brad/Pam/Karen?

          • @BewareOfThe Dog: I asked him if I can trade in later for a cellular model with bigger storage and he said yes, they will give me a full credit. )This is a voluntary upgrade of which he was well aware) I read the booklet and see that the device HAS to have a fault to get credit, so I am cancelling the plan. He lied to get the sale

            • +2

@screensaver: I've seen Hardly Normal sales people say anything to land a sale. Especially when they are selling on high interest credit, their excitement over the sale thickens the air around them.

              • @AustriaBargain: I actually believed him, thought I could trade in for full credit, because thats what he said

    • +2

soo you didn't do your own research?

      • +1

        Pam did heaps of research.

      • I needed to buy quickly in sale

        • +1

Do you own an iPhone? If you bought the wifi iPad then your best bet is to tether your iPhone to it for internet (when not on wifi at home or elsewhere) and set the Messages app on your iPhone to share all text messages across the Messages app on your iPad. For all in tents and purposes your iPad will then be able to send and receive texts, as long as your iPhone is around and powered on.

You might consider buying an iPhone to just simplify your life some.

    • He also said you need virus protection. I heard Apple doesnt need that

      • +5

Did you also get sold a surge protector?

        • I think I have that on my powerboard

      • +4

He also said you need virus protection. I heard Apple doesnt need that

Don't go clicking dodgy links in your emails or downloading crap off the internet and you'll be fine, regardless of iOS/Android.

      • He also said you need virus protection.

… there's probably enough iPad content for a mega thread rather than dear diary entries….

      • +3

Did he sell you a monster hdmi gold plated 32K cable?

      • +2

Dear Pam, you 100% don't need antivirus for an iPad.

      • You do not need virus protection.

    • I don't like popcorn but I wish I had some Sprinter plain chips.

      • +2

They're good value but the Aldi Blackstone chips are where it's at

        • +2

The pepper ones are brilliant. Rebadged kettle no doubt.

        • +2

          Friends, both crisps are winners.
