  • Wow. Great price on the Cobras.

Tempted to buy them, even though I don't really need them…

Would this be close to all time low?

    • +2

According to CCC, the lowest price (sold by a third party) was $31.79 in September, 2020.

      So yes, very close.

    • +1

      Edit: Bought, thanks OP.

  • Anything in there good to pinch off gas and water pipes?

    • -2

      High return investment i guess

  • +1

Do I need these? I am not a plumber. But can see the need to occasionally tighten or loosen big bolts and fittings. Could probably just get an el cheapo from Bunnings. But OzB. Hmm. Help.

    • +3

For what it's worth, I have found that the cheap pliers are difficult to adjust, and I have also been bitten by them too many times!

    • check the sizing but I have a pair of these and they are really good for removing oil filters if you do your own oil changes.

      • Max width is 50mm opening. Aren't most oil filters larger than that?

        • +1

A lot of cars now have a ~32mm cap to remove to gain access to the paper filter.

You are right - it wouldn't fit a traditional screw on filter.

        • Yeah I think mine must be a bigger size. As below they would work for some, but wouldn't do the larger ones.

  • Good price, was about to buy and realised I had already bought at 37 last year hmm #thingsiprobablydontneed

  • Expired? It's showing as $53.24 for me

    • +1

No, still $33 on Amazon Germany.
You somehow get Amazon UK offer which is indeed $53.24.

    • +1

Maybe check via the app - I got ~$55 in my desktop browser

      • My desktop browser (Chrome) is still showing $33.

        • I also tried, and apparently if you open link in incognito mode (or maybe just not being logged), it somehow defaults to UK :/

  • +1

Which one or two of these are usually most common and useful?

    • The cobra and the wrench pliers are fantastic.

  • I always wonder when deals like this come up…are people buying this regular home DIYers or trades people?

    • +3

I think more hoarders and FOMOs.

      • +2

        inflationists
        .

    • +5

I buy a lot of these tools and I'm not a practicing tradie.

I just love quality tools. As an apprentice electrician many years ago, it was drummed into me to buy the best tools you could afford, so that's what I do.

    • I started getting knipex stuffs since last year. The way I see is it will improve my workmanship as a DIYer because I will have no excuses for doing a shonky job because of shitty tools.

Plus it is not a bad hobby as collecting quality tools.

      • Absolutely. There are worse things to spend your money on.

Just buy the best tools you can afford. If you need to skimp, skimp on power tools. A crap drill will still get you a hole but a crap pair of pliers are just sh 1t to use.

    • Price to performance is great with these being so cheap. The steel is much harder and better quality then a cheap pair of pliers.
I paid around $60+ for my set of NWS pliers and now thanks to Amazon I can get a knipex set for almost the same price.

Hard Quiz - expert topic - pliers.

  • +2

the 150mm Cobra pliers is also $33 if you want to EDC some pliers.

That's me, and was about to place an order when noticed Amazon doing Amazon-thing with the description: https://www.amazon.com.au/Knipex-87-01-150-atramentized/dp/B… listing says "Knipex 87 01 150 SB Cobra … 150 mm" but description says "Size Name: 220 mm" and "Item dimensions L x W x H: 8.4 x 1.9 x 22 centimetres".

I'm still going to place an order, as I don't think 220 mm Cobras exist.

  • Knipex experts - please help with the differences and your preferences

    Chrome-plated vs Atramentized?

    87 01 250 vs 87 02 250?

Is 180 or 250 the recommended/commonly used Size for occasional home DIY?

    • +1

01 vs 02 is a difference of the handle.

One is the 'comfort' handle. I think it's down to personal preference.

    • +1

      Chrome-plated vs Atramentized?

Chrome finish can chip and it not meant to be used in some industries eg. Aviation.

    • Is this Cobra Pliers the most versatile/most commonly used for home DIY?

  • Are these approved by the Australian Dental Association?

    • +4

Yes, but only the equine chapter.

    • +4

      MI6 and ASIS approved

  • I didn't see these in the original link but ended up getting these 180mm same price: KNIPEX COBRA WATER PUMP PLIERS 180MM https://amzn.asia/d/2eVXMoh

  • How to these "water pump pliers" differ from a "multi wrench"?

    • Not exactly sure what you mean by multi wrench but note that the jaws have teeth and are slightly concave

        • Ah yes then I would say the pliers wrench are more for gripping on flats e.g. hex where you don't want to damage or round the nut off. The cobra would be better for rounded surfaces e.g. threaded pipe as long as you don't mind if the surface might get a bit marred - don't use on your bathroom fittings.

          • @Stinger au: Wouldn’t you just use a socket set for most hex nuts? Seems like a pretty niche application these Knipex cobras..

            • @mogley: From the reviews I've seen they're basically like an adjustable spanner but easy to get on and off the part, and they also don't slowly loosen like most adjustable spanners.

              • @Stinger au: Ok thanks. That said, I can't see many use cases for tightening threaded pipes around the house. I do need a good adjustable wrench but looks like the multi wrench is not really on sale to OzB standards

            • @mogley: Then you will need to carry multiple size sockets or just one of those wrench pliers. And the ratchet action is fantastic.

              https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Iy57Gumkr_U

The price on those wrenches is about 1/2 of those in Totaltools so definitely a bargain.

              https://www.totaltools.com.au/hand-tools/pliers/multigrip/si…

              • @ntb: Yeah fair enough. Just seems like a lot of money for a hand tool I can't see myself using all that often…

                • @mogley: Just think of it as instead of buying a full set of quality wrenches (which is of course not cheap), you will just need one of this.
But if you don't use wrenches that much then it's no point buying this anw.

                  • @ntb: Dammit ok you convinced me. Got the 180mm wrench pliers for $60. Guess I could just sell it for $60 if I don't ever use it right?? Um
Now to go find some bolts to tighten

                    • @mogley: I don't see a problem with returning to Amazon if you don't like it though.

                      • +1

@ntb: I definitely won't return them. Most likely they just sit brand new in my tool box and one day I realise I paid $50 for some fancy pliers I never used :)

  • +2

Seems like a good deal on the pliers wrenches - I also got an unexpected further discount - bought 3 items (not sure if this triggered it but FYI)
total should have been $153 but was charged $130.

edit: Seems like there is a buy 2 save 11% promotion on that is convering some knipex items so possibly it was from that?

  • +2

No Prime means I have to order 2 to qualify for the free delivery :-\

    EDIT:
    In case anyone is wondering,
the KNIPEX Cobra Set is AU$ 209 now

    Equipped with 1 each of 87 01 125 / 150 / 180 / 250 / 300 mm

    https://www.amazon.com.au/KNIPEX-COBRA-SET-5-PC/dp/B07DNQWR2…

  • The control cabinet tool looks interesting, but it also looks like some cheap casting tool that can be had for $5.
