There are a bunch of add-ons that are free too.

    • +8

Yes, on various platforms too, but they all require the paid base game. This is a standalone free game that adds +1 to your count, and is playable completely free.

      • Ahh okay. Thanks for the response.

Très bien, merci OP. Le TGV est beau.

      Strewth! That’s high praise.

      I think…

  • +12

And here I’ve been catching real trains all my life - like an idiot - totally oblivious to the very existence of this free simulator.

    Boy, don’t I ever feel dumb…

    • +4

Don't worry, we had an operator/driver that would finish running truck and dog all week, then stay up all weekend doing long haul runs in a bespoke truck simulator rig at home….

Tell me about it! I’m here on my long-awaited weekend, alt-tab’ing between OzBargain and my Excel 2022 Simulator…

How does this compare to actual train simulators? I've bought all the last few for my old man because he loves trains.. 😅

    • +1

      Wondering the same

    • +7

This is an actual train simulator. You can even upgrade to the full version and continue your progress buying all 800+ DLC costing a mere $10k USD in total.

      • +3

Going by your standards of actual train simulators, 10k seems like a bargain when you consider the price of an actual train and building your own rail.. 😅

        • +1

So you meant like a real world training thing? Yes, you could easily spend thousands on something like that, but I expect most of the cost would be in the physical item, not the software. From what I've seen of driving and flight training simulators, the software itself is pretty basic.

        • Or just buy a RailDriver for $500.

If you read the steam reviews , people say it's a bad game , train derailed on straight track !

    • +3

I mentioned that in the description, but there weren't that many reviews, and they presumably paid money for it. On the other hand, it is now free.

      Train derailed on straight track

I'd call that realism. Maybe they were going too fast. But yeah, it also could be a crude physics engine.

      • Quite.

I heard Carlos the Jackal used this game for all his training runs…

      • +1

Judging from the system requirements this game is ancient, I think maybe the physics glitch out on modern CPUs as there are heaps of negative reviews saying the train derails 100mph lower than the posted speed limit for that section of track and a couple of reviewers say the train derailed at 30mph.

Steam says the game was released in 2016 but it's obviously far older as the system requirements are for a Core 2 Duo running Windows Vista and it even states that you need QuickTime Player installed for video playback.

Maybe someone put a coin on that tracks.

  • Wonder there is a mission impossible 1 mission pack ;)

La critique des joueurs n'est pas terrible, c'est gratuit et on sait pourquoi.

    • +1

Je dirais meme plus… pas terrible du tout!

Dovetail games are the biggest con artists in the transport simulation community. They constantly release “new” versions of the same train simulator which are nothing more than the previous name crossed out with crayon, and the new version name written in. The DLC costs an absolute fortune and the whole graphic and gameplay system is outdated and never gets updated.

It’s time there was a shakeup in this genre of gaming.

    • +2

There's a new one called SimRail finally bringing some decent competition to the genre, and Derail Valley is getting a major update although not sure if it's going to have any real-world routes like the others.

Haven't played Train Sim World ever since they did a deal with some advertising company, requiring existing purchasers of the game to accept that new third party's terms if they want to continue playing (can uncheck a box on whether ads are shown or not, but still need to accept to the terms). Maybe I should stick to GOG or something as I'm not a fan of this world where you no longer really own a game, but are entering an ongoing relationship with the publisher and they can unilaterally alter the deal or terminate your access.

  • I always wanted to play one of these games. Thanks OP!

Is there a chance the track could bend??
