Just in case anyone missed this, comments in a recent deal indicated that digital Good Food gift cards should be redeemable at any merchants using MCC 5812 or MCC 5813 (the MCCs for restaurants - excluding fast food restaurants - and bars), not just the merchants listed on the Good Food gift card website.

Was also able to sporadically use it with Menulog as well (they sometimes use 5814; perhaps with fast food restaurants). Works more consistently with eatclub.

    • How can you tell which MCC a restaurant is using?

      • +2

You can't. This might get declined at the POS terminal. This excludes Fast food restaurants but rest of the restaurants should work

        • +1

Ah I see, so it's a bit of a gamble with the restaurants not directly listed there…?

          • +3

            @hunbenn: Correct.

The MCC is assigned by the institution providing the payment processing facilities (e.g. EFTPOS terminals) for the merchant, and it is a piece of information someone operating an EFTPOS terminal does not need to know in order to use it.

That means that (for example) if the merchant is both a bakery and a cafe and you pay for both bakery and cafe goods through the same EFTPOS terminal, it is a gamble whether the MCC reported by that terminal is 5462 (Bakeries) or 5812 (Eating Places, Restaurants) or something completely random (e.g. 5499 - Miscellaneous Food Stores - Convenience Stores, Markets, Specialty Stores).

The same merchant can also use different MCCs, which is something @DrPotato alluded to above, plus MCCs can change at any time… Can you see why I generally dislike gift cards restricted to use at specific MCCs?

Btw, I am (very slowing) building a wiki page listing the MCC reported by OzBargainers at various merchants. It would not be very useful for Good Food gift cards, because there are very few merchants using MCC 5812 or MCC 5813 on that page, but you can see the MCCs previously reported for some bigger restaurant-related merchants (e.g. Subway, Grill’d, GYG).

            • @WookieMonster: I noticed a few Crown Sydney Restaurants were listed, Woodcut, Nobu, Oncore, and some others, but not Epicurean.

If you had to guess, would these gift cards work for Epicurean(Also located within the Crown)?

              • +1

@hunbenn: My guess would be yes, because Google lists it as a restaurant, but you won't know for certain until you give it a go!

Keep in mind that TCN could again restrict the digital Good Food gift card to only work at the restaurants listed on the Good Food gift card website, so please don't purchase a Good Food gift card for the sole purpose of redeeming it there (unless you have a backup plan to redeem it at other merchants).

One last thing I forgot to mention earlier: even if the merchant uses MCC 5812 or 5813, you could still run into a situation where you cannot redeem this gift card, because it is a prepaid gift card not tied to a verified cardholder and lacking security features commonly found on debit and credit cards. For example:

                • I was once at a restaurant where I could order at the table on my smartphone via QR code, but when I went to directly enter the details of a prepaid gift card into the online checkout, it was rejected with an error message security check failed.

                • I was at another restaurant where I had successfully used a prepaid gift card by swiping it, but when I used the same type of prepaid gift card about a month later and swiped it a couple of times, but the EFTPOS terminal came up with a message saying card not accepted. The staff member explained the owner reached out to their EFTPOS provider to block prepaid gift cards for security reasons!

@hunbenn: It worked for me at Epicurean, paid via Google Wallet. Additionally some cafes and restaurants that I go to as well, both on and not on the list.

  • I found it worked for me only at pub restaurants and some Menulog restaurants that’s all. I couldn’t use it anywhere else , it was declining a lot .
If anyone can share places where it has worked ?

    • If you like fried chicken, Hot Star Chicken worked for me last time

  • thanks

  • What about doordash?ubereats?

  • Looks like this gift card is more suitable for use in NSW and Victoria. But there are additional unlisted restaurants per say on their website.

The in-app transaction history seems limited. On the website, it only allows to check the cards starting with 5021 (while my card starts with 5121).

  • I bought this from Woolies last week but I can't find a way to add it to google pay.
I registered it and contacted customer support but they said it couldn't be added.
    Any help?

    • I am assuming you purchased a physical Good Food gift card that operates on the eftpos network? If so, that currently cannot be exchanged for a digital Good Food gift card.

      • Thanks @WookieMonster
I guess good to know for the future.
Would you think it would still work at most restaurants or only at the ones listed on the website?

        • Someone else said the physical gift cards are actually limited to the restaurants on the Good Food gift card website, but it is something I would encourage you to test it out just in case something has recently changed for the physical gift cards.

          • @WookieMonster: We bought a physical one (the new white one issued by TCN) from Woolies and were able to use it at a restaurant not listed on the website.
