These are really old at this point and also don't have wired backhaul, imo there are better options for slightly more money unless you really want Google Assistant

    • I have 1st gen Google WiFi which has wired backhaul, this is the 2nd gen and it doesn't have it?

      • +1

Yeah I went to plug my desktop into them via Ethernet (after having used first gen at my parents place for years) and no Ethernet port! So surprised

      • +1

Yeah, they brought it back with the new gen (Nest Wifi Pro) but that is not out in Australia.

      • Not in this bundle pack. Purchase multiple Nest Wi-Fi routers @ $269 each for wired backhaul.

I have this and love it. For those who may not have known, the base unit can serve as an NBN modem. I have Tangerine set up through it

    • So doesn't need to be connected to a modem? I thought it needs a modem. Oh wow, I don't think I've read this on any websites but that's great to know. Thanks.

      • +2

Google 'tangerine google nest', go to modem set up guide, follow instructions

        • I'm not with tangerine but thanks. Will look into it.

@ritzaus: If you have FTTP then any router is all you need. If anything else like FTTN then you'd still need a modem which will connect to the base of the Google Mesh.
I had the 3pk Google Mesh and it kept going offline at random times. I would wake up or be out and it'd be offline. It got so annoying that i switched over to the TP Deco X68 3pk and it was so much better. I only needed 2pk because the coverage was wider, and the Deco app allows me to toggle between 2.4 and 5ghz. Bear in mind the Google Mesh does not allow you to toggle so it can be annoying if you have a smart appliances that only use the 2.4ghz frequency.

An additional VDSL2 modem is only needed for FTTN and FTTB.

For everything else plugin the Nest Wi-Fi router to the nbn box.

        • I have heard that before about FTTN but I don't really understand why. With our old FTTC connection we had a telephone plug go into an NBN box, which then just had an RJ45 output. Why is FTTN not the same?

          • +1

@deanylev: You need a VDSL2 modem to get FTTN syncing with the node. Most ISPs give out VDSL2 modems so nbn never made a standard one.

FTTC has the nbn NCD modem with ethernet out and reverse power for the nbn DPU equipment. Most of nbn's DPU are in underground pits.

    • I also have mine set up as the modem with More Internet. Works a treat

      • +2

Just saw your comment below, is FTTP.

    • +2

Google Nest Wi-Fi is a router and is not an nbn modem. nbn supply their own network termination units.

    • +2

No. It's not a Modem. This isn't responsible posting.

    • Yeah really good, I've got these on Exetel hfc

I asked the store rep for deals and they happily provided it to me. I don't work for any store (currently unemployed) and I receive zero incentives making these posts. If anything it's a waste of my time but in my nature I love providing deals for the community that's just what I do. I would never do anything to risk my reputation and mods know this.

      • +1

It looks like I misunderstood the guidelines. I thought we are not allowed to post any deals if we had inside information from someone that we know that works there. To be honest, that's how I understood these here

Friends/Family - you are associated with someone who works there or owns the business (friend, family member etc)

But I am wrong. It's just the way that I read it, that's what I thought. I had so much inside information that I haven't used so far because I thought I am not allowed.

        • @I Smell Pennies please change to associated. If you have inside information from someone that works there. You might not work their, but someone that gave you the inside information does.

Of course the rep works there lol

Just misunderstandings… but I'd want to put it out there that I'm not a friend of the business rep, and definitely not part of their family. So I wouldn't declare myself as 'associated'. There's a difference between being friends with a rep and just reaching out to reps for deals.

What I just posted now is no different to me posting this for example.

  • I had this for many years with Optus and Aussie hfc but I definitely needed a seperate modem as the base is a router, not modem.

I now have Orbi mesh, doesn’t have all the included management stuff and the Google wifi was good but my network is much more stable now.

    • +1

Reading about it now and apparently don't need another modem if you have fttp. Need modem for fttn. Feel free to correct that if someone knows for sure.

    • The nbn NTD is your HFC modem. Google Nest Wi-Fi or NetGear Orbi is all you need plugged into the nbn NTD.

I have the 3 router pack, upgraded from Gen 1 (used Gen1 for more than 5 years), and bought 3 nest routers instead of wireless satellites.
I DO NOT recommend them even at this price.
They have some serious quality issues, 1 router died after one year and I have serious issues with the other 2 routers' consistency, I need to restart them at least once a fortnight.

    • Conversely I’ve been running a triple pack like this with an extra Router for 2+ years without issue

      • I have had a 3 pack for a couple of months. One satellite keeps dropping out and I have to power cycle it. Bloody annoying. I've attached it to a timer so it'll just turn off 3am, and back on. I shouldn't have to do it, but I can't be assed trying to connect google, warranty etc. If the other units play up, then I'll do it.

Or I could start again and get an Orbi etc etc

  • How is Dlink mesh compared to google nest?

    • Good question. The price has dropped on this so it's $228 with the code. I guess Google has the assistant speakers but this looks better cos WiFi 6? Happy to hear thoughts before pulling the trigger on one of these sets. Thanks.

I wouldn't touch this product. Be warned! I had this set up for a couple of years before I got sick of it . Nothing but problems. Had to replace the router twice through Google due to constant faults. Had to factory reset the entire network countless times to fix random problems.

Endless PITA. I wouldn't want it even if it was free…

    • I wouldn't recommend if given the money on top. It started out OK at launch, albeit clumsy needing 2 apps… Got good for a while and like Google in general unfortunately gets neglected

      • Why two apps? I don't own these devices and I'm curious.

        • +1

Original Google Wifi and I think Home were originally required at launch just to get started. Was clumsy af

          • @scuderiarmani: That's weird I own these devices and all I needed was the Google Home app

            • @Scythic: Not on day 1.

            • @Scythic: You must have gotten them "recently", there was an awkward transition from the dedicated app to the home app thats been described…

Its like the nest cam to home app transition… I can't see my door bell in one and can't access history in the other (or something similarly annoying).
