Asiana Airlines: Sydney to New York via Incheon from $1394 Return @ I Want That Flight

240

Asiana Airlines are having a sale on flights to New York from Sydney. Travel in late October - Novermber/23. Ticket includes 2x 23kg bags and meals.

Flights are via Incheon in South Korea, and the outgoing flight sometimes has a long stopover (15hrs). South Korea normally has a K-ETA visa waiver available so you can visit Seoul while waiting for your flight - but it looks like due to Covid they are temporarily giving most countries including Australia an exemption (so you can visit the city without needing to apply or pay for the waiver). More details at k-eta.co.

If you have a long layover definitely leave the airport and head into Seoul. It's about an hour from Incheon to Seoul station by train (only a few bucks) or you can catch the airport limousine bus (17,000won) which takes a bit longer, depending on traffic, but will drop you right at Myeong-dong if you want to do some shopping or go to the night market. Yes, it's touristy and the street food is dearer than elsewhere in the city but there's heaps of other restaurants and stuff in the area. If you want a bit of culture you can pop over and check out Gyeongbokgung or one of the other impressive palaces. If your timing is good you can watch the changing of the guard for free as well. Entry is only like 3000 won to see inside the palace complex.

I just had eight days in Seoul (plus a couple of days in Busan) and it was such a great place to visit.

    • This guy Koreas

    • Looking to go to Hokkaido in Feb and considering flying Asiana just to stop over in Seoul for 3-4 days. I think that's a good amount of time in Seoul

      • It's kinda just another big city. You might find that it's unbearably freezing like i did. Good thing is street food is fairly cheap as are clothes.

        • i'm going specifically for the cold :)

          • @phxsun: Also have fun if you have no korean language skills. Bit of an eye opener after travelling to Japan

            • @belongsinforums: It is definitely not as easy as Japan but I had no issues and got by with just hello and thank you. If you are going to the main tourist places you don't need to speak any Korean. People appreciate it if you have a go but you'll be fine if you stick to the major sites. Subway and bus announcements, as well as street signage, are all in English. I never had an issue, at worst I just pointed and did some basic sign language.

Google maps doesn't work so great, or at all for walking directions, but if you use Naver maps you'll be fine. The only issue is even though it has English settings it won't always give a result when you search for a place in English. You need to google the place's name in Hangul and then copy and paste that in the Naver search bar. It's a bit fiddly but you quickly get used to it.

              • @Blokeinhisundies: I took a long distance bus to my friend's city. Everything was in hangul. Nobody spoke English. That being said, this was over 10 years ago.

I actually ended up speaking Japanese a lot because people there were used to Japanese tourists i guess

    • did you catch the train for the couple of days?

      • Yeah the KTX trains are great. Even in economy there is plenty of room and between Seoul and Busan they run ridiculously often.

        • Genuinely, thank you for the info. I was attempting to make a shitty train to Busan joke haha.

  • Do 2x of this round trip and you will get star alliance gold for up to 4 years. Well, till Asiana shuts shop from Korean Air merger…

Actually, I searched on Asiana and it appears Economy (V) earns only around 80% of mileage.

    • It's 70% so will need 3 round trips if crediting to Asiana.

  • So can we stay a few days in Korea with this airfare?

  • Free fresh air with door opened during mid-air ?

  • Thinking of flying to NYC via Seoul and spending a week in each of those cities. Has anyone done something similar?
