MSI just lost the signing keys to their BIOS updates (i.e. it's a bit of a mind-blowing security cockup) and have no recovery process for this. Probably worth keeping in mind.

  • This, vs. the Macbook Air M1?

For gaming, THIS wins obviously (Windows).

Not sure for others… battery life? Build quality? Windows vs. Apple support lifetime? Performance?

I really want a replacement for a 14'' 7th gen i5, 8gb ram… Nothing wrong with it (I'm a web developer), just the screen edge is yellowing for some reason (Acer) and looking for good value as a frugal f face. Mine is plastic and would rather not have a plastic one in the future (v bad experience with HP Pavilion in the past, and with this Acer, I have to be careful and treat it like a flower, i.e. delicate)

If you're comfortable with Mac OS and not going to be gaming, go the Macbook imo

i bought the 13th gen version of this and i quite like it. however it doesn't feel as premium as a M1 air. But to get 16gb of ram which I need, i would have needed to spend a lot more. I would rather have the M1 air but to save $400 (both alternatives being on special), I am happy with my decision. The m1 feels solid and premium, this is light and flimsy - doesn't feel premium but the hardware is very nice/fast.

        • "doesn't feel premium but the hardware is very nice/fast."

I feel this applies to basically ALL Windows laptops. The ones I've tried include the Thinkpad T450, Thinkpad X1 Carbon, a lot of different Dells (including the Dell XPS 13 7390 (2019) (VERY nice sceen though)), and consumer grade HPs and and Acers. So far, none have the premium feel of the M1 Pro I use at work.

…but MacOS makes no sense sometimes / doesn't feel intuitive.

    • Macbook air M1 is dead silent and should be running really cool around 25c to 30c with normal usage. Build quality and battery is quite nice for my M1 Pro (getting around 16-17hr for uni, so air should be sitting around 15hr.

Limiting factor is that for the price of around 1.2k is that you're getting 8gb ram and 256gb ssd.

  • Ram upgradable?

    • LPDDR is soldered unfortunately

      • Who's dumbarse idea was this in the tech industry?

Maybe they should follow up with right to repair with right to upgrade (the basics, limited obviously)

  • Can this machine handle simple gamings like emulators up to PS3?

    • very unlikely since no dedicated GPU

      • That's where thunderbolt 4 comes in

  • @ChatGPT I'm only getting a $50 reduction on the price. So from $1249 to $1199. Only 1 coupon can be used…

    How are you getting $1079?

  • Is this worth an upgrade from Dell Latitude 3420 11th Gen i5-1135G7?

I'm really liking the 990g weight on this one

    • Curious to know, you have an 11th gen i5… Do you find it good enough?

      (I use an i5 7th gen… Wondering what I"m missing out on)

      • +1

Yes i find it good enough. I mainly use it for browsing and office applications

Your 7th gen i5 is only dual core

        • My i5-7200U is surprisingly only dual core, yes. It's still my daily, and I find it good enough surpringly. I also have 8gb of ram.

I have like 10 windows of at least 10 tabs… I think my spec is more than enough for 95% of people.

Honestly am wondering what I"m missing out on. I do want to upgrade 'just because', and this processor is not offically supported by windows 11.

          • @smartProverble: Do you use teams webcam? I had a dual core and when I used teams my laptop collapsed, that's why I had to upgrade

            • @Homr: You mean Microsoft Teams camera? Yup it works. Weird yours didn't!

              • +1

@smartProverble: I couldn't multitask while I was using it. When i changed to a quad core the problem went away

                • @Homr: Thanks for the info.

Just in case you're curious, don't know why anyone would be… literally right now, I have like a combined 50 Chrome tabs open, Steam running (not gaming) and MS Word running. I'm on battery too… It's working / responsive 🤷‍♀️ totally fine. Ram usage: 6.9 / 7.9 GB.

Still looking out for a sub $400 (even 2nd hand) deal… Must be at least Intel 10th gen (or equivalent AMD) and 16GB ram (or expandable ram) - I want to see what it'd like with >8GB lol

                  • +1

@smartProverble: why 10th gen? an 8th will have quad cores. You won't find 10th gen for sub $400.

I'm looking for a Surface pro 6 8th gen with 16gb for $400 and even that's hard to find.

  • Seems better than the Lenovo Thinkbook 14 I ordered (still waiting to delivery) for $1271.

    • I had the same thinkbook on order with lenovo, was meant to be shipped within 10 day's, ended up cancelling after almost a month of waiting and got the 13th gen version of this MSI one on the ebay deal a couple of weeks ago, received it the following day. So far so good, real nice light little compact unit

      • Sounds like I need to cancel as well. How much did you pay for the 13th gen MSI?

      • Which state are you to have received it the following day? Sydney or Melbourne? Thanks. Wondering how quick is their delivery.

        • Gold Coast, QLD

    • If you don't care about MacOS, I would say that the Macbook Air is arguably a better purchase (though 8GB ram… but MacOS uses it differently from Windows / more efficiently from my understanding)

Missed out too. Normal is $1299 now

  • This deal, or Yoga 9i for even more than this expired deal;
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/762738

Okay it's a silly comparison, but for me I'm seriously considering both, and the OLED & touchscreen are on my 'would like to have but not mandatory' list. Comes at the cost of battery life and 400g.

  • Deal finished

  • Deal back on

  • Can anyone who has this product report on battery life, please? I'm tempted to buy and wondering if poor reviews do it justice. 13th gen versions appear to have reasonable battery life according to online searches. Can it be that much different/worse between 12th and 13th gen?!
