Incorrect Name on My International Flight Booking

TLDR: My flight booking from Malaysia transiting through Singapore is missing my surname, what do you think in the outcome when I go to the airport on the day.

My dad has recently passed away in Malaysia. I went back to see him in the hospital and accompanied my mum and stayed for a while after his passing. Now that my mum is in a better headspace, it is time for me to go back to my own family in Brisbane.

So last week, I made a one-way flight booking from Malaysia to Brisbane using Expedia. The flight is comprised of 2 legs, the first leg from Malaysia stops in Singapore via Malaysia Airlines and then the flight continues to Brisbane from Singapore via Qantas. This is all under the one booking, I think Malaysia Airlines and Qantas are both part of Oneworld Alliance. After I receive my flight confirmation, I found that my surname is missing from the booking, and in its place is my first name, and the first name field has my middle name instead. Naturally, I called Expedia customer service to rectify this issue.

After being on hold for an hour, I was told Qantas has denied the name correction request, and the only option presented to me was to cancel my ticket, and rebook me on another flight. Expedia wanted to charge me 500 ringgit for doing so, plus whatever the extra costs of the new flight booking compared to the old one. I was shocked and said that I would never split my first name and my middle name when filling in an online booking form. If there was a mistake, it must be at their end. The guy I spoke to, Mike from Expedia pretty much called me a liar and would not budge.

I hung up the phone and called Qantas, surely there must be a good reason for denying the name correction request. It didn't go well, I was hung up on twice after I mentioned why I was calling and put on hold. At the time I just chalk it down to bad phone connection or something. When I got through the third time, I found out why, the guy on the phone pretty much told me I needed to file a request through Expedia and that they are not touching the booking at their end. I told him the situation that Expedia has already told me that Qantas had denied the name correction request and I wanted to know why. He basically said that third party bookings are not their concern and that I can't escalate the request. Although it was a pretty tense conversation, I applaud the Qantas guy for being upfront instead of hanging up on me so I won't mention his name.

So Expedia is saying that I can't update the name on the booking because Qantas has denied the request and Qantas is saying that to update the name on the booking I needed to file a request with Expedia? WTH?

I paused for a bit after having these convoluted conversations and let my thoughts sink in. What can I do now? F*** it, I will be like my dad and throw caution to the wind. I will just show up at the airport next week and see how it goes. What is the worse that can happen right? What are the odds I will reach Brisbane as scheduled on the day?

  • Nothing useful to add about the ticket, but condolences for your loss. This ticketing issue would have been an unnecessary inconvenience and drama that you wouldn't need at this point…

Happened to me when I booked via 3rd party for scoot from Syd to Jakarta via Singapore. They put my first name as middle name. So it was first name first name, middle name.

The check in counter in Sydney happily changed it though. I made sure not to do online check in before hand.

  • Op, before you do anything drastic. Those early voters and commentators have obviously no idea. They might have to call a supervisor to approve but you"ll be fine, just explain at check in.

The name you put in is part of your identity. if it doesnt match 100% you'll be denied.

That's not true. I never put my middle name on flight bookings (but it's in my passport) and they still accept me for travel.

      • You do this for international travel as well? I've seen a few comments where people do this

Yep I never put my middle name on international bookings. It's much more important to have the correct details in the APIS fields (name, passport number etc) within the booking than it is on the actual booking.

      • Sorry for the confusion I mean for the person on the other side of the desk.

See if you can cancel the ticket through Qantas and get a voucher for the amount. Works if you’ve bought directly from them but idk about using a third party. Good luck 👍

  • If it makes financial sense then just buy a new ticket and lodge VISA/MC Chargeback dispute with your bank. Expedia has no way of proving that you actually entered a wrong name or made a booking altogether. Just tell the bank that it was online fraud and in 99.9% of cases they will accept this reason, maximum inconvenience is that they will reissue your card with different numbers. You can also try to call Expedia and tell them the same fraud story and demand immediate full refund otherwise you lodge a Chargeback, they often budge because they get a black mark for every such transaction.

  • If you’re certain that there is a bug in their system you could book the flight again and screen record yourself filling out the details correctly, I think you’d have a pretty clear case of putting them at fault.

I’m assuming here that tickets booked through Expedia are not manually processed by a person. If they’ve already fixed the bug, or the issue doesn’t happen again then this will be an expensive exercise.

You could also try posting publicly to social media channels of any of the companies involved. Sometimes companies are more inclined to resolve issues in order to avoid bad publicity.

  • I wonder if a declaration from a Justice of the Peace could be useful to get in this instance ?

  • Does your passport number match the one you put in Expedia? If so, don't worry.

  • Best of luck and stay up OP, we all have difficult time in our life, just dont give up and face the issue.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. So what has happened so far, I contacted Expedia to cancel my ticket and the guy quoted me the refund amount without taxes(which was an extra RM250) and the RM500 cancellation fee. I questioned the amount, and eventually got the taxes added back to the refund amount because I hadn't taken the flight yet.

Anyway, I ended up rebooking the same flight on Qantas website this time for about the same price, so the total lost to me was around RM500. I decided that after spending 4 days dealing with this, and the uncertainty and continuing stress of not knowing whether I will be denied boarding is just not worth the RM500. I am still very much still grieving, so I think I would rather spend the time that I have left in Malaysia with my friends and family.

    • Glad you mostly got it sorted out without being too badly out-of-pocket.

Your ordeal is one of reason I don't use any third-party agents. It becomes a real headache when you can't deal direct with the airline.

Sorry to hear that mate. I hope Qantas and Expedia have both lost a life long customer in you. Boycott them as your form of protest against their crappy service.

      Sorry for your loss!
I think you made the right move… the ~RM500 is worth eliminating the stress during a hard time like this.

Best Wishes & Hang in there.

    • You just wasted your cash.

  • I have had no issue with mistyped entries. This often happens when you book through agents. Sometimes they ask if I have the card I paid for the ticket and made no scene.

common with East Asian Chinese or Japanese type names where the family name is honorifically placed first

and so they often end up the wrong way round - last ticket to there I think my family name and given names were mashed together into a single unspaced 'word' - maybe even with MR appended to the front - so yeah SNAFU and enjoy whichever flights they let you on :-)

    • Emirates did exactly that to my tickets that were purchased from booking.com

Many years ago I booked a Cathay Pacific flight for my parents on Expedia and noticed my mum's name came out wrong.

I called Expedia and they put me on hold for an hour. I got frustrated and used a second phone to call Cathay Pacific directly and got through almost immediately, although I was told there was nothing they could do.

When Expedia came back to me I put them on full blast for taking so long when I was able to get through immediately. They hung up on me. I has to call back and speak to a different person, and pay the fee to have the name changed.

Best to just pay to avoid the hassle, airlines are very strict about names and will not let you on if there is any discrepancy.

Also, sorry about your loss, I understand the pain you feel.

Kudos to that customer service rep for hanging up on you. You think the call centre wage slave has control over your wait time?

yeah pretty standard…. shit service for people that arc up at you pretty much. You want to get them off your line. Little bit of respect + yarns and the CSO might go the extra mile for you.

    Go to airport "tolonglah boss".

  • here is my advice:
    1. Dont bother with Expedia. You will just waste your time. This is the very reason why i prefer landbased travel agent vs OTA. At least can i give my middle finger to their face if they give crap service.
    2. Call Qantas, tell them your situation. There compassion situation that they may give you. (I did once with Jetstar).
    3. Maybe try your travel insurance.
    4. Last option, sorry but i think you will need to pay for it.

  • I have never seen my full name on an air ticket (and in most of Aus gov agency accounts as well) since it's toooooo loooooong. To make the matter worst, my first and last names are the same!
Never had any issues with flights though. Working with Gov agencies and confirming my identity was sometimes troublesome though.

  • On a similar note - does anyone know if shortened versions of names cause issues? I've got some flights coming up and one of the people traveling with me has a shortened version of their official name on their ticket (for example, ticket says John Smith, passport says Jonathan Smith).
