Is My Moto G5+ Phone Dead?

I have a Moto G5+ which I keep as a spare phone.

Tried to turn it on this morning to do some updates and it wouldn't start. Thinking the battery is dead I plugged it in to charge but after about 10 minutes or so noticed the phone was really hot so I unplugged it expecting the battery to blow up. It didn't. But the phone still wouldn't start.

Is it cactus?

(dammit, I tell a lie, it's a G5 plus not a G4)

  • any swelling of the battery?
how long since you last used it?

    • Can't see any swelling, would have turned it on a couple of months back.

  • Sounds dead

    Hello Goodbye Moto

  • try soft boot by holding powerdown volume button and power button for 10secs

  • Put it in rice overnight

      What a ridiculous comment.

Rice has too many carbs. Use cauliflower instead…

  • Try microwaving it to see if you can shock it back to life

No, that hack is definitely only able to recharge iPhones.

  • It's a 2016 phone. Battery probably never charged. I'd imagine that's the issue.

Replace the battery and it'll be a good back up phone again. Depends on how much ofc.

    • I do keep the battery charged and topped it up a couple of months back, the phone stays in the off position. I'll see if I can figure how to get the back open, looks sealed to me. Cheers

      (edit, just did a double check and it's actually a G5+…stupid memory…)

      • Apologies, I mean the battery never changed. So it's an old battery and it could just not hold a charge anymore.

But in saying that, if you can replace it easily(ish), then you can re use it

        Looks like it's more than a 5-second job. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0hczOSWFds

From a quick look online, it seems that you can buy a replacement battery for about $20 ~ $30 (and then DIY, as per the video), or get a mobile repair place to replace it for ~ $130. Not worth it, IMHO. Whilst I don't have a G5+, I do have a G4+ and a G6+ and they'll all be next to useless once Telstra, Optus and Vodafone switch off their 3G networks. (IIRC, the G6+ supports VoLTE on Vodafone only. I don't know about the G5+.)

    • Replaced removable battery in G4 with similar problem last month.
Phone was regularly kept charged - occasionally in use as hotspot.
Didn't come back to life. Tried soft reset.

Was worth a try. Luckily got refund on battery from ebay, less postage costs.

G7+ battery is failing, lasting only an hour. Previous battery was replaced under warranty at 18months
Considering opening & replacing internal battery.

Last week, bought Moto G62 5G - free with 100k points @ Telstra Plus. Points earnt in Deals here.

  • Is My Moto G5+ Phone Dead?

    as a doornail

  • Also owned g5+. If you have left on charge regularly after 100% charge they have tendency to start swelling and lift screen as mine did. Seems to be a common fault with G5 +. I experienced good performance with G4, G6 +.
Battery can be replaced about $30 but best done by service agent unless you have necessary tools and skills

  • There is a good chance from the description that it the fault is in the battery.

A pity the battery is not a simple plug in with removable back, like the previous model Moto G5 was.
I blame Apple for the trend to sealed phones.

  • I had a umidigi phone which i charged , battery got hot, and then phone wouldnt boot. Bought a replacement battery off aliexpress , fitted it , and phone booted

  • It's dead Jim.
