i refuse to buy china made. only australian made and sourced laptops for me!

        haha - Username also checks out …. :) ?

PS - How did you type this without a laptop!?

        • +1

          On his Aussie made phone?!?

      • Correct name!

Also comes with Intel Xi graphics processor

I remember the days when every component of computers got a lot bigger every year, but it seems like 8GB RAM and 256GB SSDs have been the standard 'go to' entry level office/work/study laptop businesses hand out on mass for years now! …

…Has Moore's law slowly succumbed to the law of diminishing returns for RAM?

    • +2

keep in mind that's an SSD not a HDD, so while the sizes haven't changed the speeds have greatly improved

and yea Moore's law is over

      • +2

        But it's DDR4 SSD. That's insane speeds

      • If Moore's law still existed we would have 200+ GHz CPUs today.

        • +5

Moore's law isn't about clock frequency. It was an observation that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit (IC) doubles about every two years.

          • @flagger: Yet, throughout the 90s CPU frequencies were doubling every two years.

    • Most business laptops don’t need much. Storage could be 128GB as all files should be going to storage on servers for security and back ups.

      • My work computer needs 8gb just to run all the security software

        • 😀😀

      • Not as true as originally thought - we've had dozens of incidents of our work machines filling up since going to sharepoint and teams cloud based files because we deal with a lot of large files and everybody is obsessed with syncing the teams site files / folders to their local machine for various reasons, so effectively have a duplicate copy of a large part of the server on their local device, and it just takes care of keeping the changes synced back to the great big azure cloud !!

  • DDR4 SODIMM is extremely cheap if this isn't soldered LPDDR4 memory.

  • +2

If this is one of those plastic HPs… beware, it will start snapping after 2-3 years, build quality is non-existant with consumer grade HPs.

  • Hello guys, just wondering if that build in graphic card is enough to run league of legends? I have been using my old dell for almost a decade, that has radeon 74xx, and i am able to run just fine. Reason asking is that i only play this pc game, so dont really need a fancy ‘better’ one. Thank you

    • Plenty of vids benchmarking this iGPU on YT

    • LoL is designed to be able run on a baked potato.

This should be roughly the experience you should get (it's the i7 but the GPU difference is not very large):

If it's the only game you play you should be set.

      • Thank you sir. Seems like can run at decently high frame rate. Awesome!!!

    • Is it soldered RAM?

      • I couldn't find anything on HP site so I think it's just for office works, the closest I saw was a laptop for $1,000 (sometimes OW changes the model number so a price beat can not be done or it's stock just for them)

  • +1

    It's almost Q3 2023 and I rarely see laptops with DDR5 Ram

    • +1

Is DDR5 RAM a big upgrade over DDR4 for non-gaming applications?

      • +2

It's more beneficial to non-gaming specialised workloads but varies greatly between applications, anywhere from 1-25%.

        • +1

a 25% increase in performance would be substantial, I can see justification for the extra monetary investment (in DDR5) in that scenario

    • +1

      It does listed under specifications.

Does the USB C support Display and PD

  • Can someone help me. I'm just wondering if this is better value https://www.harveynorman.com.au/lenovo-ideapad-slim-3i-15-6-…

    thank you

      Some things to consider:

      Your linked laptop has:
      - More space (512GB vs 256GB)
      - $11 cheaper

      Disadvantages:
      - TN display instead of IPS
      - Slightly older and slower CPU (11th Gen vs 12th Gen)

If you value space highly, then perhaps the Lenovo is the way to go.

I decided to go with the HP. I've purchased both HP and Lenovo laptops before…my HP laptop from 2016 is still going strong with no issues, whilst the Lenovo laptop I purchased in 2018 has had to be fixed twice. Anecdotal I know, but I feel the lifespan of Lenovo laptops seems to be a bit of an issue based on what others have said online as well. I needed a cheap backup laptop to use when presenting etc and don't need much space so decided to go with the HP.

      Hope this helps!

  • Thanks OP,
    Got one on Tuesday!
The price has gone up since to $797

  • Interesting… looks like the price has just jumped up to $797.00?

Mine was delivered today. Not too bad… it gets the job done, but just don't expect a premium laptop (plastic, bendy keyboard, no charging via USB C etc). Pretty slim, good performance so far. Battery life doesn't look terrible but definitely not very long.. maybe 3-4 hours.

It's good value for money, but not gonna blow anyone's socks off. You can't ask for much more at this price point.
