  • Are lithium rechargeable AA and AAA batteries a thing? If so, can this charge them?

Yes, you can get ~1.5V rechargeable li-ion AA/AAA's and no, this charger will not charge them. They will either offer an application specific charger or you can get ones with a USB socket within the battery so you can charge them just like you would a phone (These usb connector ones exist because a PCB is needed inside the battery in any case for this type of battery in order to regulate the voltage to this non-standard voltage level).

You can also get standard 3.6/3.7/3.85V rechargeable li-ion's in AA/AAA compatible sizes, I think the sizes are 14500 for AA and 10440 for AAA. This charger supports those types but you can't just go putting them in any consumer device that takes AA/AAA batteries because the voltage is much higher than "normal" for consumer-exposed AA/AAA battery slots. Ignorantly attempting to plug this type of battery into a consumer product that takes AA/AAA batteries has a fairly good chance to lead to permanently damaging or destroying the device (and hopefully nothing else along with it).

In general you are better off just using NiMH if you want rechargeable batteries for AA/AAA consumer products. Whatever advantage you hope to gain from 1.5V Li-ion AA/AAA's is at least partially lost by the current drain and battery-space that gets consumed by the internal regulation/charge PCB.

  • If I wanted to buy a charger for my old folks to charge some eneloops….this would be fine…right?

    • Yes

    • Probably overkill; the eneloop smart and fast charger is simple, effective, and comes with 4 eneloops.

It's $50 on Amazon, but as you can see, it goes in sale all the time:

  • Interesting, I like the independent bays although would this charge faster then one connect via a normal mains power plug? Or does it make no difference?

Bought it and will ask questions later :P
