[Pre Order] ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme Gaming Console 512GB $1299 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ JB Hi-Fi

3913

It seems like JB is the exclusive retailer that has the ally available for preorder at the moment.

I expect that supply would be tight for the first few months. Limit 1 per account.

P.S I know about the PR disaster Asus is going through at the moment but I think because of that they’ll be extra careful from now on to honour warranty claims.

  • Someone posted this earlier and it was removed for "Unobtainable deal". Wonder if the same will happen here. I dont need it, but very tempted to place a preorder myself

    • +1

I think it had something to do with a coupon not actually applying

      • Ahhh that might do it

  • +1

PR disaster? What have I missed?

    • +21

      Motherboards, VIOS voiding warrantys,

      Check Gamers Nexus vid

    • +5

Irrelevant to us because Australian Consumer Law.

ASUS not honouring warranties due to BIOS updates sucks in the US where you have to RMA.

In Australia it doesn't matter what ASUS says or does you take your shit back to the shop you bought it from.

If the ROG Ally is a piece of shit you can just return it.

      • +1

It does bloody matter. Even if it were just the time and the effort arguing with offshore bottom of the barrel types who've never heard of ACL, what're you going to do if they refuse anyway?

The ACCC won't do anything unless there's thousands of complaints, it seems. 99% of people would give up and walk away.

        • +11

Isn't the idea here to not argue with the offshore whatever whatevers and just take it back to jbhifi?

        • +1

You take it back to the shop

  • +4

Also available directly from Asus with free shipping

  • +4

$1300 yikes will wait for it to be under $700

    • +4

      So second hand?

    • +4

      Such a cringe comment

    • +2

Don't think you will get this anywhere near $700. Even the steam deck in Australia is hard to get down to $700. This will go down to $1,000 lowest after using coupons and gift cards

  • +13

$700 USD so $1050 AUD, the extra $250 in taxes import fees all that stuff, just make it too much to be viable, a smaller laptop with much more powerful dedicated graphics and a controller for less than it, I know the portability is a selling point, but if asus had eaten some of that import taxes stuff, make up for some of their short comings lately, would of been a good selling point. for $1050 would of instantly bought.

    • +28

I don't think you should neg. At least they brought it into the Australia retail market (unlike dog Valve). Give it time, they might have a special.

      • -8

Why? The point of this site is to post bargains. If it isn’t a bargain why shouldn’t they neg it?

Give it time, they might have a special.

Cool. Post it then, not now.

      • +1

Was nothing against the poster, but like the bloke below who got negged to no end, it's ozbargain  , neg me down.

        • +2

People just like to see this product in stores becuase it's a new gaming console. In terms of value is has a lot of emulation potential.

    • +5

Good thing you can buy jb hi fi gift cards for 8% off right now :) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774935

      • Is there a limit on how many gift cards?

    • +8

It's 699 GBP / 799 Euro outside of US which equates to $1300 AUD

      • +9

yup even in the states theres usually a ~10% sales tax which they dont include in the sticker price

      • +4

Those prices include VAT which is more than 20% in GB and EU. should still be cheaper here. boohoo

        • Asus products like GPUs and motherboards are almost always cheaper in the UK and parts of the EU than here, I'm not sure why but they also get products before we do. Preferred region probably.

      • And it's $899CAD which equates to $1000 AUD.

    • +2

They're not making money on the games like Valve.

    • If they sold it for the equivalent of the US price here then all the stock would be bought up by scalpers who will then sell it at a scalped price to Americans who missed out over there.

  • +15

grabbed a steam deck from an Ebay sale for 740, slapped a 100.00 1tb ssd in it = way better deal.

    • +1

      https://youtu.be/2nyV2al_Euk

Seem this one can do 4k but too expensive

      • Neg means for too expensive or 4k?

    • What SSD did you get?

    • +7

      Asus has more power

    • +8

This one is much better than SD IMO, 1080p, 120hz, better CPU and cooling.

    • +7

This has 1080p and up to 120hz. Steam deck has like a 3 or 4 year old processor though probably better support, UI, QoL.

    • But can the SD emulate the switch lmao. Steam OS is pita to work with bootlegs, even worst getti g win 11 running on it.

The rog ally is the cheapest/best performerming out of all the ha dhelds running on Windows so it's a better deal from that perspective.

Plus 35w tdp on this just slaps the SD

  • +3

My steamdeck was mostly a FOMO buy if I'm being honest with myself. I play it occasionally during work lunch hours but for the most part the much more powerful and comfortable Desktop is always my go-to when at home anyway.
I guess these portable devices are neat if you're not already a PC gamer and looking for an all-in-one solution anyway?
I kind of got swept up in the hype and forgot who these things are generally aimed at.

At a glance the lack of touchpads and no suspend game feature that I've heard about might be cause for concern when comparing the two in any case.

  • +7

Would recommend waiting for reviews or second generation or revision. I saw on LTT that the face buttons can get stuck.

    • +9

Yeah this is what's putting me off. I'd love to get one but the buttons getting stuck is just unacceptable imo

      • +2

Yeah, unacceptable for a $1000+ device. I actually had the issue with my elite 2 controller and put some tape on the edge which fixed the issue.

The pricing is tempting TBH for the performance increase. I don't think a steam deck 2 is coming in the next year or so.

  • +6

No touchpads, bad battery life, and $1300? They're on a hiding to nothing.

I'm happy with my desktop PC + Switch combo for the moment.

    • This can emulate the switch lmao. Selling mine to fund this

  • +9

where is the bargain??? as someone pointed out earlier, you can preorder it at Asus site with free "Australia Wide Express Shipping"!

    • +1

Can you get discount cards for asus site?

    • +3

Rather buy from JB Hifi. Easier returns.

  • Rrp preorder wasn't a bargain before, during or after covid and the "supply chain" gouging.

  • +1

    Is this a (profanity) joke?

  • -2

Would rather the techfast deal for $1400 with a 3080ti lol where is the bargain ?

    • +6

You're comparing apples to oranges here

  • Buy a Steam Deck instead. Then buy a Retroid Pocket Flip when you decide you want your portable to be pocketable. Then spend the left over hundreds on games for either.

Way too much, RRP isn't a deal, even less so when it's a brand new product, at least with the PS5 and Xbox bullshit (which was still bullshit) stock was confirmed to be incredibly limited and it was actually hard to get a hold of one anywhere. Who knows, this thing might sell like 3 units in the whole country and be available in store anywhere any time.

  • +5

    This is OzBargain, not OzPreOrderAtFullRRRP

  • +1

Asus or Blizzard who is more underhand?

    • +4

      Blizzard.

Activision corrupted blizzard just like frostmourne corrupted Arthas. Ironic.

  • +2

I'll wait until Windows is better at suspend. I have. Steam Deck, but would love to have better, easier access to other launchers, especially Xbox for Game Pass. But the suspend on the Steam Deck means I don't have to plan to play. I can play for 1 min or 1 hour.

  • Which one is better, Steamdeck or this?

    • +2

Tech specs, this. Software and community support, Steam Deck. Steam Deck is more of a console in that (for the most part) it just works.

Also depends on how much of your PC library is in Steam.

  • +3

This is cool. And expensive. And also not a bargain. Maybe if they were doing an actual discount or a bundle with headphones or ANYTHING AT ALL besides a full retail offering, it might belong here on this page.

    • +1

Depends how you look at it. Hand held PC's has the steam deck and everything else that's runs windows.

Expect to pay $1600+ for a GPD/Ayaneo/onex that would compete with the SD. This basically undercuts them all and is probably the fastest hand held on the market (maybe 7840u would be faster but not optimised tdp wise).

      • +2

Totally agree. My point was putting a full RRP item up as a bargain. Looks like an awesome piece of kit, but wait for an actual deal on it to post here.

  • Super keen to pick this up but I'm gonna wait till at least $1,100

  • +1

    OzRRP is back baby!

  • Cool product. A modern take on PSP. Shame on the price though.

  • +2

Even putting aside ASUS's recent bad behaviour…

RRP preorder is not a bargain.

  • +3

This is just a pre-order. No deal imo

but I think because of that they’ll be extra careful from now on to honour warranty claims.

With a puff of copium lol

  • I have an AYANEO 2, I was watching the Ally closely but so far it seems less impressive than devices with the 7840U. The upcoming AYANEO 2S seems like the better option at this point.

    • Do you mean in terms of performance?

      • Benchmarks so far weren't as great as I was expecting, the 7840U seems like a better option from what I have seen. At this point I'm more interested in seeing how much the 2S improves over the 2.

        • +5

The Ayaneo 2 is selling for like $1800 locally, the performance gap between the Z1 and 7840u ain't gonna be much, no where near $500 worth even if the 2s releases at the same price. Doubt it'll have 120hz vrr screen aswell

          • @krisspy: It's cheaper from the IGG campaign but then you have to deal with AYA support if something goes wrong so I can see why some people stick with local retailers.

        • How's the software on ayaneo?

          • +1

@Circly: Could be better. Their AYAspace software is still in beta but they have shown off v2.0 which looks much better. That being said, it's a Windows device so you can install other software.
I use AYAspace for TDP, fan and LED control but set Playnite to start with Windows for my game library.

It's definitely not as easy to use out of the box as the Steam Deck. Some people use things like ChimeraOS or HoloISO on AYANEO as well so there are other options.

    • +3

The ayaneos are not bad but for $2,000 it's crazy expensive. Can get a really nice gaming laptop/PC for that price

      • At $2k it's a bit much.
I paid closer to $1600 I think for the 512GB model, including dock and case. That was via the IGG campaign. You end up paying quite a bit more via local retailers.

  • +1

Battery won't last long. It is just a machine to play pc games on the bed. Or maybe standout on airplane.

  • +1

Isn’t this the normal retail price then, not discounted at all?

(And I guess cheaper at ASUS as they have free postage)

  • -1

I was excited for this, however Asus just screw over the au market again with these inflated prices.

    • +1

It's $770 usd in the states, which is about $1160 at the time of this post. $140aud difference isn't necessarily getting screwed over.

  • +1

It's just not a value proposition at $1299. I know it's apples and oranges, but Nintendo didn't sell 122 million units by selling at over $1k per unit at launch. This the isn't the PC handheld gaming to the masses I was hoping for. Shame as Asus raised my hopes at $699 usd. .

    • +1

This is more worth it than a $550 switch oled.

You can emulate the switch too.

    • You need to understand that consoles can be sold at or near loss because companies make money from the games they sell.

Steam deck was the pc handheld for the masses as the unit was subsidised by steam sales. Don't hold your breath for a cheaper unit than that, it ain't gonna come.

  • do you guys think the console will sell out?

  • Does anyone know if i could just put a deposit for it to secure a unit and pay later with discount gift card in store. Nearest jb in 30 km hence asking

    Btw not associated currently

    Thanks

  • +1

For anyone interested in getting one of these, go to the JB chat and you should be able to get the price down to $1250

    • This works? Have you tried

      • +1

Yep my order is $1240 in the end. Will provide the receipt tuesday when i pickup

        • Great! Im hoping i can do this about 15 days later to get trs refund too!

        • End up getting it at the cheaper price? If so could you upload receipt?
