Car Auction Registration Victoria

Has anybody had any success registering a car that was bought on behalf of their son/daughter at an online auction. I bid/won a car at pickles online vic. They transfered the registration into my name without my permision. I have read their term and condition and it does not state anything about registration. I asked vic roads to rectify it at time of registration and they would not do it. I asked pickles to supply a letter of the mistake they have made and they say they have not made a mistake.
Today, i discover a vicroads web page regarding buying cars at auction. i have been dealing with vic roads and pickles for three months, they have made no mention of this web page previuosly.

Why can’t you leave it registered in your name, nominate your son/daughter as a regular driver on the insurance, then get them to pay for everything as if it was their car?
Nearly every parent did that where I grew up as it lowered the insurance cost and made comprehensive insurance affordable for 18 year olds, albeit with a hefty under 25 excess.

How hard is it to just go in and transfer it? Takes about half an hour including waiting in line.

    • As long as they have a (still valid) RWC from the auction house and another $42 (which admittedly is more of a principal thing if it was an error on behalf of the auction).

      • +4

RWC won’t be valid after 3 months.
Plus isn’t there also the $8.40 per $200 stamp duty?

Or they could just get a rwc even if they don't have a valid one. They've spent that much time on it now, and would have purchased the car under market value as it came from auction. Just suck it up and get it sorted.

I'm addition, when you register with pickles they verify your card, and your licence, including CRN. They can't just transfer cars to random people.

  • Referring that one out…

I reckon this is going to be one of these where "it is the principle" but then turns out they are an undischarged bankrupt or trying to avoid child support or something similar.

  • Vic roads were happy for me to pay the transfer and stamp duty again with the same rwc. I wasn't. Happy to keep the car on my name out of principle. Considering my daughter contributed some money towards her car, i thought it would be only right to have it also registered in her name also.

    and what does it say?

    • I'm not sure. We all missed it? and all of a sudden its been around for 2 years. How can anyone at vic roads or pickles not know about this information until today.

        What information?

I went into Vicroads in Burwood with my son and asked if they could transfer a car that I bought for my son from my name to his. I explained that it was a mistake that I registered it in my name. They transferred it over the counter while we waited at no cost. It's not something that they say they do on their web site, so maybe it was just a "right time right place right attitude" experience.

    • How long ago?

      • It was a while before the lockdowns, so maybe 4-5 years at least. I don't think that should stop you from giving it a try, though. What do you have to lose?

Bought at car at greys auction, they said the car will only be registered to the wining bidder and to bring ID on collection of the car for transfer.

This is what I would expect.

  • I purchased the exact same make and model 2 years earlier from the same place and no issues registering in my older daughters name. I explained this to the service officer. Was not interested. Mind you, their website also stated if the details were wrong, to go into vicroads.

    who paid for it?

    • She paid half. Partner and i paid the balance.

whos name is on the invoice?

        • Registered bidder. My question and according to there t&c . Where does it state the registered bidder has to be the" registered operator" of the motor vehicle.

          • +2

@Minasm: who was the registered bidder? you or your daughter?

            • @Wiadro: I was.

              • +2

@Minasm: theres your answer, the vehicle was registered in the buyers name.

                • @Wiadro: Not according to the motor traders act or pickles terms and conditions. Read the definitions. Where are my rights to decide.

                  • +1

@Minasm: did you mention it to pickles when paying?

                    • -2

@Wiadro: My daughter was standing next me. They made no mention of registering. I did not sign any transfer forms. The did it all electronically. Apparently, anybody can transfer and accept without going to vicroads.

@Minasm: You didn't answer my question, did you mention it?

your daughter standing there means nothing to some admin person who needs to register 100+ units after an auction.

  • I'd guesstimate this process was implemented so that there was no chance of vehicles being driven unregistered and therefore, uninsured (TAC wise). This prevents the auction house from being held liable when buyers inevitably drive the car away and crash it on the way home.

  • Sounds very much like a non-issue to me.

I think if you had made it clear to Pickles you wanted the car registered in your daughters name, they would have. It appears this wasn't made clear, and (rightly or wrongly) they automatically register it in the buyers name (which to me seems a logical and reasonable thing to do).

Leave it in your daughters name until it expires or pay to swap the registration. I think you are spending too much time on this and it won't change the outcome. Only suggestion would be to physically go into Pickles and be super nice, ask again and they may do it out of courtesy (but I don't think they are required to).
