Logitech Z407 Bluetooth Speakers with Subwoofer & Wireless Control $118 + Delivery ($0 to Metro/ C&C/ in-Store) @ Officeworks

100

Officeworks has Logitech Z407 computer speakers for $118. I suspect they only have limited stock and are clearing it.

The Z407 was priced quite a bit higher (~$250) when I checked Officeworks a few days ago, which is around the current price at JB and HN. They are currently $132 at Amazon.

I wanted the Z407 for my PC as they are rated very highly for this price range:

Reviews are pretty mixed for these, mainly due to the controls being exclusive to the stupid AAA battery powered puck.

It's also one of those speakers with the super loud "power on" and "device connected" sounds that you have no ability to turn off.

    Yuck.

I think 2.x PC speakers have always been a single 3.5mm cable, at least in my experience for the last two decades. Also IME motherboards have interchangeable in/outs for the audio ports and can run the 3.5mm ports as either inputs or 5.1 or 7.1 outputs which is usually configured inside Windows / the audio drivers UI. I see no reason that those speakers wouldn't work with e.g. this AM5 board (literally first result on OzB) https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-B650-TOMAHAWK-WIFI

Apologies, I just edited my original comment right before you posted because one should google before asking basic questions.

I operate the X530's with just 2 speakers and I still need to plug in 2 cables (1 for the sub.)

I will look into the information you have provided.

        Thank you for your efforts.

        • No worries, best of luck! Speakers are very fun to own and play with :)

          • @DiscountForThee: Is there a decent 2.1 set like this you would recommend that has a built-in dedicated volume slider, specifically one that doesn't just adjust windows volume?

            • +1

@duckduckering: Personally I've been using this lately, and it does the job as the 2.1 speaker for my PC. Decent reviews for a good price. The volume dial is on the speaker itself (so no separate slider) but it doesn't affect windows volume. Make sure to have this plugged in to a separate USB power supply like a phone charger and not into a USB slot from the PC.

@DiscountForThee: My final decision was between the Creative Pebble Plus 2.1 and the Logitech Z407 - both seem to be rated well. I went with the Z407 because of the bluetooth and the wireless controller. Umart still has the Pebble for $49, which is a great price.

The was wireless controller was a must for my use-case. The subwoofer in on the floor and the two satellite speakers are out of easy reach. Without the wireless controller, I would've needed to use the PC OS volume control. You can still control sound from the PC as well.

It's also one of those speakers with the super loud "power on" and "device connected" sounds that you have no ability to turn off.

Yeah, I read that too… but I installed the speakers just now and did not find those alerts to be that loud.

Are there better speakers you would recommend at a similar price?

Are there better websites that you would recommend for reviews of PC speakers for non-audiophiles?

      • I'm no audiophile myself, but I would not be looking at affiliate websites.

I guess the OzB faves Edifiers go on sale regularly, altho no chance of a 2.1 set at a similar price.

        • The previous Ozb deal for these and the comments in there seem to be positive.

@Dinjay: I bought one last deal, sound quality is pretty disappointing, my JBL Flip 4 has better clarity than them.

The vocals are so bad and the bass is too high.

The wireless knob also has high delay to wake. Takes around 15secs and multiple presses to wake from idle.

But for $75 I would not complain, not sure about $118 tho.

            • @Hellcrusher3304:

The vocals are so bad and the bass is too high.

Have you tried adjusting the bass down?

I was able to turn bass completely off by pressing for 2 sec and turning counter-clockwise. I am in a carpeted room and the subwoofer is on the floor, so I need bass a bit higher. Presumably, bass might need to be lower if you're on hard floor like wood.

@Dinjay: Yeah I have the bass turned down already, but I still find the vocals lacking in clarity.

          • @Dinjay: Haven't seen any complaints about the sound quality of these speakers, only the entire user experience.

Just to name a few after 10 minutes of research:
-no dedicated speaker controls, instead forced to use a wireless puck.
-wireless puck is powered only via AAA batteries—ongoing cost to replace
-wireless puck results in input lagged controls with some configurations
-loud power on/off and device connected noises that cannot be adjusted or turned off.
-speakers auto sleep after 15 minutes if no sound is played.
-speakers don't wake up properly after said sleep mode.

Unfortunately that user experience aspect is just as—if not more—important.

@Dinjay: I mean you get what you feel is right for you. I was just pointing out that the websites you have linked are not the best source for information, as most of the time they are written by "3rd party" that do not even have hands on the products. With the emergence and easy accessibility to AI, more and more of this utter vomit will just dilute the genuine reviews, making ppl waste their time.

            GL on your purchase.

Edit: Oh I see you have owned these before the post…. makes sense now.

            • @Steakz: No - never owned these. I just did C&C collect and installed them this morning. So far, so good :D

@Dinjay: That's awesome! You know what, if I were you I would just leave this post and go to enjoy your speakers! :)
