AV Receiver and Interchaging Sound Output

Trying to wrap my head around this so pardon my ignorance. I have a new 5.1 ch Av Receiver. I am wondering if I can switch easily between listening to the sounds of the HDMI source I am watching to the TV should I choose to not want big deep sound. I have an Apple TV as HDMI 1 and PS5 as HDMI 2. An HDMI cable from the AV runs to my Sony Baravia HDMI 1 ARC input.

So lets say I am simply watching an episode of something on Netflix and I dont need big huge sound or I am playing a PS5 game and don't want big sound. Is this just a case of mute the AVR and put the TV sound up ?

I assume without the AVR on I cannot watch any picture from any source?

Would I be better outputting the Apple TV sounds only to the receiever via an optical cable ?

Sorry I'm new to the modern ways of how recievers work. The last time I had one 5.1 was all done via RCA!

  • Cycle through the sound programmes on the AVR until you find one that's suitable, likely 2ch stereo. TV speakers are generally awful. AppleTV already has a digital interconnect so no need to change.

  • The AVR should have a DSP called Dialogue Mode or similar, that's probably the one you're looking for.

  • Not sure what brand you have, but this is simple on Denon - it’s called Video Select, and allows you to assign video from any input to any other input.

  • I have a Sony Bravia android TV with ATV and PS5 plugged directly into the TV and AVR plugged into ARC port.

If you press the quick settings button on the TV remote (looks like a settings sprocket icon next to the arrow wheel) you can select "speakers" on the action menu that runs along the bottom of the screen. On speakers I can select "tv speakers" or "audio system" which switches the output source.

I have hdmi control turned on so the TV remote volume buttons control either the TV or AVR volume - whichever is currently active.

    • Thanks - I might try that - seems this is what I could be after

    • I have no done it this way and it worked for me. Thanks!

      • Awesome! Glad to help. I havent used my AVR remote for years. If you select the ARC hdmi port on the tv inputs, the tv remote should also allow you to control the AVR menus.

  • Check the HDMI options on the receiver. Should have passthrough to give sound when the receiver is off. What brand and model do you have?

Alternatively, if you have devices plugged into the tv, and the avr plugged in to the ARC/eARC input, you should only need to turn off the AVR for audio to switch to the inbuilt speakers.

    That all said: blasphemy.

    • Passthrough uses a lot more standby power on most AVRs, in some cases just as much as being on.

  • Just leave any power options under the ARC options disabled. Then turn off the amp?

  • Sorry for the delay and thanks for help to date. The system is simple its a Yamaha yht1840b kit. Theres not a tonne of features from what I can see.

I have tried to turn off the AVR but I got loss of sound and picture.

I have plugged HDMI out of the AVR into ARC/eARC of the Bravia (HDMI 3).

    I plug PS5 into HDMI 2
I plug Apple TV into HDMI 1

I just leave the AVR on and mostly listen to the TV through the AVR. Late at night to avoid bass thump I'll switch it to mute and just use the TV remote volume. Works fine.

What I did find weird is the Apple TV will work in 60Hz HDR when AVR outputs to TV HDMI 3 but not TV HDMI 4. PS5 does HDR on TV HDMI 4 but does't like to do HDR on TV HDMR 3…..thats odd.

    • Did you scroll through the different sound programmes? 2ch Stereo mixes down to two channels with no low frequency effects being sent to your sub. Do you have the manual for HTR-2071?

      • I have now sorted it thank you
