Suggestions for CPU to Pair with Gigabyte RTX3090

Hi y'all,

Can anyone hit me with some good bang for buck suggestions of a CPU/mobo combo to pair with a Gigabyte Geforce RTX3090 for gaming at 4k

Would like to find that sweet spot with $/frames

Predominantly for gaming use, including MSFS

Thanks in advance

What resolution do you game at?

    Apologies, 4k single monitor

5800X3D has the best FPS for MSFS

TL;DR 5800X3D is the exact same fps as 7800X3D at 4K

At 1080P the 7800X3D is roughly 12% faster than the 5800X3D

    13600k.

I think anything above an i5-13400 is excessive. And save a few $ by getting one without integrated graphics.
DDR4 is best value/performance still. 16GB suits nearly everyone.

    • If you're doing any machine learning (which the 3090 is great for), more ram can definitely come in useful.

Depending on budget, I'd consider a 7000 series system. Benchmarks, AFAIK, are all similar at 4K. You're getting similar gaming performance, easier to cool CPU, and the possibility of a decent future upgrade.

If AM5 is similar to AM4, a drop in upgrade may stretch your platform's life in the future with reasonably minimal effort.

13600k vs 5800x3d depending on which platform you want are the best dollar value cpus atm for gaming

  • As you already have the 3090 (presumably), I would get a 5800X3D and just plan a full system upgrade in however many years. The money you save by not opting for AM5 can go towards your next build. The 50 series is rumoured to be offering the largest generational performance uplift (over 2x of the performance of the 40 series) and will probably finally have DP2.1 support which is probably going to become relevant for a lot of people soon, especially at higher resolutions like 4K. That will be an attractive time to upgrade for a lot of people. I personally am planning to see what the CPU market looks like then. Assumptions that AM5 will last as long as AM4 really just have one data point to back them up.

    • yes now have the 3090. I'm running it with an old albeit overclocked i7 6700k at 4.6ghz and i'm not seeing any bottlenecks at 4k in MSFS. Seeing a slight bottleneck in Sons of Forest though.

      • It really depends on the game, I have a 4070ti with a OC 7600k running at 4.6ghz, and when I play the Witcher 3 it is bottlenecked by the CPU at 1440p, Gpu stays at around 50% and cpu is running 100% nearly all of the time.
