Need a New Wi-Fi 6e Router with Advanced Settings

Need a new wifi 6e router with advanced settings.

I need to be able to block access to selected websites.

My current router has a parent app but I would like to block sites such as youtube completely during school hours.

The wifi has to be extra strong. Thanks.

    Good luck on your journey

    • I also have not seen one, so also good luck.

If they're 10yo+, trust me, they'll find a way to view what they want to view…

    • It's 2023 parents are meant to delegate responsibility to technology.

    • Yes, you are spot on. I am thinking of replacing my current router with a brick….

I found asus quite good and combine with google family if you have android. 6e is expensive unless you have device running those range.

    • I will probably need to run ethernet cable from the router into my office to enjoy full speed.

      I am currently using a tp-link ax73 version 1.

Just need a fort nox proof block certain sites feature as well.

  • Could you expand on why does it need to be WiFi 6e?

There's lots of existing discussion on parental control software and solutions if you do a search. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/parental%20controls…

Google Nest has a fairly comprehensive parental control filtering option. Uses Safesearch database so it's pretty good at identifying adult sites.

You need to however buy the extra-expensive version (Google Nest Wifi Pro) to get Wifi 6e.

Note that many phones and laptops don't support Wifi6e unless it's very recent.

If you have problems with getting Wifi to every room consider buying a 3-Pack Mesh router pack, it doesn't have to be Wifi 6e.

    • Nest Wi-Fi Pro is not available in Oz.

      'parental control software'

      The irony

      Google? Yeah right.
Someone needs to modify anti bark collars that go off when certain websites load up
(And maybe upload footage to youtube)

  • Have you logged into your current routers settings page (192.168.1.1)?
Most modern routers should have a website blocking page.

The wifi has to be extra strong. Thanks.

This… doesn't really exist. Most wifi routers will be pretty similar- they use almost identical antenna designs (simple) and they are all capped at the same transmit power.

I was testing some much fancier gear the other day (far more sophisticated antenna design) against a bog standard home wifi router, and there wasn't a huge amount of range difference at the edges.

So don't buy a wifi router on anyone (especially the marketing on the side of the box) saying that the wifi is 'extra strong.'

Eh, I know they are all generally governed by signal output power limits etc but I have had the opposite experience.

Going from a cheapo ISP supplied router to a decent (albeit now quite old) ASUS RT-AC87U I found I had much greater usable wifi range. So much so that I gave up the idea of getting a mesh system.

So I think the antenna design/signal quality/overall quality of the unit does make a difference, especially coming from a low end router. I think your statement probably rings true if you are going from say a $250 router to a $600 router, but going from a $50 to a $250 router is noticeable IMO.

  • Asus RT-AXE7800 is Wi-Fi 6E and has URL filtering.

    • Cool just set your computer to use 8.8.8.8

      • Just add a PREROUTING rule to forward all TCP/UDP port 53 traffic to your preferred DNS server. That will work before the kids figuring out VPN or DNS over HTTPS…

        • Block Bypass Methods

Prevent or hinder the use of methods that can help bypass NextDNS filtering on the network. This includes VPNs, proxies, Tor-related software and encrypted DNS providers.

not sure if it works though

        • That will work before the kids figuring out VPN or DNS over HTTPS…

          So 3 seconds?

    • I'd be using Nextdns or Rethink DNS. Either one, honestly.

Rethink is a little less technical, good for most people.

  • Technological solutions to social problems like this will only push the kids to circumvent them. They'll either learn something useful (networking and hacking skills) along this path, or they'll sell their privacy to dodgy operators of proxy sites. It's a cat and mouse game you'll never win, and your kids will be probably end up worse off. You either need to develop a trust relationship around this, or only have screen time where you can see what they're doing.

  • today my nbn died, so i plugged my phone in via my gl inet travel router and then that into the tplink deco.
and i discovered i can ssh into my gl inet router. It's linux. So, you can do whatever you want. But - your kid can always just press the reset button and voila theyre back!

You probable need a combination of
    Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine Pro
Ubiquiti U6 Enterprise WiFi 6E Access Point

Now you have a router where you can define your rules to block site for different times etc
You need to be a bit knowledgable about networks and routers to setup these.

Lord save us from posts pushing overpriced, overkill Unifi gear from a company that makes mediocre gear with famously unreliable firmware.

Ahaha, TIL that they have an AP called "Enterprise". Ubiqiuti is not enterprise gear :D

      • ubiquiti fanboys will hate you for saying that

        • Yes, I went into that comment expecting to generate some dowvotes.

There's no networking fanbois like Ubiquiti fanbois :D

The "you need a UDMP!!" is pretty much their cliched rally-cry on Reddit.
