BYO FTTP Router around $150

I am looking to join Tangerine or Leaptel, and I would like to purchase my own modem router, as I am not sure of the quality of the supplied one that comes with each company.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which modem router I should get?

I live in a 2 bedroom apartment.

Thanks in advance!

  • Check here if you have FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP or HFC. How much do you want to spend?

    • $150 or so?

      • Sure. Is it FTTB or something else?

        • FTTP

@felto82: You don't need a VDSL2 modem for FTTP. nbn NTD + router is all you need. TP-Link Archer AX20 and ASUS RT-AX53U are under $150. If you don't mind second hand pickup a Telstra smart modem gen 2 from Gumtree for under $50.

@Twix: Thank you! Would they be easy to set up?

              • +1

@felto82: TP-Link and Asus have apps for setup and management or you can configure it in your browser of choice. Telstra gen 2 setup is in a browser and doesn't have an app.

For Leaptel choose dynamic IP (TP-Link) or automatic IP (Asus). For Tangerine choose PPPoE and put in your Tangerine username and password.

Leaptel and Tangerine sell the eero 6+ router which is good for most and they can help you if needed. Check their pricing vs purchasing it yourself from Amazon.

@Twix: My clearance Orbi is still going strong btw Twix lol.

But it probs has more to do with FTTP.

                  • @HairyChickens: A bit of both. You should easily get a few more years out of it.

                • @Twix: @Twix So I could go a Telstra Gen 2 or 3 and it would be just as good as the modems you suggested?

                  • @felto82: Telstra G2 and G3 are good for an apartment. Just remember there is no app to adjust things.

                    • @Twix: Thank you @Twix.
One more question.. Spintel… Are they an ok company as well?

                      • @felto82: Spintel are not bad if you are in NSW. Leaptel or Tangerine should be better.

          • @felto82: apartment gets fttp now!

Most internet providers usually provide or offer a basic router that does the job.
But sometimes also an upgrade for fussy people like OP.
In OP's case both Tangerine and and Leaptel offer a choice of modems.
Tangerine also provide some guidance as to which one will suit you but OP could Google for more information.
In a 1-2 bedroom apartment thier basic model should suffice if its located centrally.

The benefit of purchasing the modem from your internet provider is
      1) its configured and guanateed to work by them
      2) Its usually greatly subsidised
      3) They will provide support in case of problems
      4) they will happily handle any warranty claim and replacement if it gets to that

Issues with using ISP provided router
      5) Possibly locked to the ISP but usually only when provided free. Best to check in advance before purchasing.
      6) Usually only a basic model but should suffice in an apartment. Tangerine offers plenty of choices so not an issue.

The problem with buying your own
      a) you might not be able to get it to work with thier settings so you take on all the risk!
      b) no support whatsover provided for BYO modem other than providing basic settings so dont complain! Both Tangerine and Leaptel make this very clear on thier website!
      c) No legitimate cause for return and refund as it would be considered "Change of mind"
      d) the responsibility falls entirely on OP to choose the right modem and configure it correctly.
Neither Tangerine/Leaptel nor the retailer of the modem will be liable nor responsible if OP cannot configure the modem properly.

  • There is a wiki on whirlpool about best modems.

    Just google it

    • I find it hard to understand. I have tried googling.

Then go with the RSP supplied modem if you are not technical.

For a 2 bedroom unit the basic models supplied by both Tangerine and Leaptel will suffice.
If not sure ask them for thier advice

  • Depends how much you want to spend. Do you have any need for wifi 6? If not just grab a 2nd hand Telstra Modem (DJA0231). Will be sufficient.
Otherwise TP-Link is good, Asus Is great routers.

  • if you have fttp get a cheap telstra gen 3 modem on FB mp for 50 bucks

    • so Telstra modems gen3 and gen 1 and gen 2 are unlocked to any nbn provider including fttn?

      • i dunno about fttn, but fttp they are unlocked.

  • Don’t get the Gen 3. It has buggy wifi. They are still releasing firmware updates to address those issues.

  • The best BYO router is the one provided by your previous ISP bundled for free.
