  • I don't need this at all (already got Sony RX100 + A7C lol) but so tempted at this price…

    • Haha tell me about it. I don't need another camera but so tempted to try it out as a compact full frame travelling camera kit at this price…

  • Is this a big upgrade from a ZV-E10?

    • +5

Depends on what you need it for. Use the money for a photography trip instead, thank me later.

      • Good suggestion

    • +2

ZV-E10 is a vlog APSC camera whereas R8 is a full frame general purpose camera. if all you do is vlogging, stay with ZV-E10. Otherwise, imaging and video-wise, the R8 is much better

Canon EOS R8 is a Advanced Mirrorless class camera and Sony ZV-E10 is a Entry-Level Mirrorless class camera.
…Canon R8 is the overall winner of this comparison. It has a higher Overall Score and beats Sony ZV-E10 in all criteria except one: Portability.

Most places let you add the 50mm 1.8 for an extra $100. I can’t do this with Digi EBay, for those who are after a prime with their purchase.

  • Seems like a better than a7c as its not only more compact/cheaper but also delivers 4k/60fps.

    • one bonus for the a7c is that it has in body stabilisation, this one doesn't. Might make a difference depending on what you shoot/what lens used

      • Yes but it is rather lacklustre though if you read the reviews. Its likely that you need a gimbal or IS lenses anyways. whilst lacking 4k.60fps on the a7c can be a deal breaker for many people. poorer battery life is understandable as it uses smaller battery to reduce the weight which can be solved by having spares.

        • +1

Panasonic S5II or (S5 for a similar price point to this deal) would be better than both these cameras for video

    • as always, the answer it depends and depends on what trade offs you are happy with. For video R8 lacks IBIS. Can be overcome with either a lens that has OIS or a gimbal. Battery life is pretty terrible on the R8 and well below most other models. Can be overcome with having more spares. I would imagine the R8 has better ergonomics and menu system. Sony has bigger lens range as well as other manufactures. There are more comparisons to be had so as always depends on someone's use case. For me I figure out the lenses I want, then figure out the body.

  • F4.5 to 5.6 yuk.. paired with A7C Tamron 20-40 F2.8 would be a much better candidate for just little extra.. more complete lens line up for Sony would be an added advantage.

    • 24 to 50mm is more landscape oriented, you don't need large aperture

    • $1500 difference is not just little extra. and it does not give you 4k/60fps.

We should compare a deal to a deal (not a deal to a normal price). Last A7c deal at JB hi-fi was 2K (the lens can be had for less than 1K) so it's less than 1K difference. But what you get for that extra is massive. Battery life of R8 is less than 300 while A7c is more than 600. Sony sensor (despite being 5 years older than Canon one) is BSI hence has better ISO capabilities (also ranked better in sensor rankings). Just body to body comparison Sony wins hands down (at same price point). Tamron 20-40 vs this rubbish lens is not even worth comparison.

        • A7c - 51200 iso / 509g
          R8 - 102400 iso / 414g

I’ve been considering my next camera and was looking at Sony, Panasonic, Nikon. But have always had Canon, 450D and 70D, so know the UI and have too many accessories for Canon. This will be my first jump into full frame and looking forward to the upgraded video capabilities. The small battery will be solved with having 2, which I’ve always done with my previous kits.

Edit: also looks like the offer has ended. I can’t see the banner on their store anymore and the discount is only 10% now.

          • @VerticallyIntegrated: 20% code still showing and working on this item.
Not raving the R8 as a one-eyed Canon fanboy as I owned both Sony and Canon gear. But the R8 has much faster speed than 7C (40 FPS vs 10 FPS) making it suitable for wildlife and sport photography as well. Plus better AF and subject tracking - human and animal heads, faces, and eyes, including dogs, cats, birds, and horses, and also vehicles including cars, bikes, planes, trains and helicopters… Last time I read, the a7C can only track face and eyes of human subject.

            • @Buy2Much: A7C has animal tracking - it uses the same AF as the A7SIII. Camera manufacturers really should do firmware updates to upload new training data to support different types of objects to track, but they won't….

              • @Goonos: How many typical a7c users would need animal tracking for wildlife photography?

                • @OzHan: I was replying to Buy2Much. But me, for one. Animal tracking is great for pets.

          • @VerticallyIntegrated: What matters most is 'how far can ISO be increased while maintaining decent image quality' not the highest ISO. The DxOMark low-light ISO metric will give you this information. This is where cameras like A7s excells (due to larger pixels etc it's low light ISO score is much better). This metric of A7c is higher than R8. If you are not worried about low light photography then this isn't a major issue (especially this lens with F4.5 you need to basically forget about low light photography anyways). Many people do not know the bare basics of camera sensors.

            • @npnp: I'd say most if not all recently made FF cameras have more than decent ISO performance if you do care about low light. Even the D700 which I had many years ago had reasonable ISO in low light. This is really not a concern for me personally.

It's a shame the offer doesn't apply to all items. I tried on the gr3x and it didn't work for me.

  • Recommendations for a camera to take on a overseas trip?,
    Preferably under 1000?
    For landscape backgrounds

    • +1

canon g7x mark ii or have a look at sony a6000s series

    • +1

Your phone? Typical “new-ish” phone can certainly do great landscape, and if you have someone in front of a scene, the person and background will almost certainly be in focus due to small sensor and aperture.

    • +1

A modern entry level mirrorless camera like this R50 including kit lenses with 20% off $1039 delivered.

    • canon r50 with 20% is $1039 ….it’s compact, takes the rf lenses so you also move to canon FF later if you want …..full frame vs aps-c …. i tend towards aps-c as it’s smaller and get more range out of the lenses ….. not at a level where aps-c is a limit ….. sony seem to be quiet on aps-c model with a top mount view finder …. sony seem to be vloggef in aps-c ……deciding between r50 and r10 for $200 difference as my entry into mirrorless……

  • Has anyone gone from an EF body to an RF body and kept using all their existing lenses with the adapter?

I've got a 6D II which I'm quite happy with in all aspects for the amount I use it, except I would love to have an EVF cos I'm an idiot with metering and it's no fun seeing after exposures way off. What's the equivalent body these days? The FPS throws me off the most since the electronic spec feels like a hack/compromise.

    • +1

Did not have EF body, but I used the EF to R adapter to use my favourite Voightlander and Zeiss EF-mount primes on Canon RF-mount camera. And for the Sigma 150-600 zoom too. Worked quite well.
I dare say R8 is the modern 6D II equivalence. Or go for the cheaper RP which is several years older but is still on sale.

      • How would you rate the R8 improvements over the RP? Upgraded sensor seems the main draw to me, but still trying decide if its worth the ~1k difference in price

  • How does this compare to the A7IV?

    • +1

The A7 IV's direct competitor is Canon R6 II. R8 is in the A7C's category (compact, single SD card slot).

  • +2

Damn, just about to buy and it sold out :@ Was going to be my upgrade from the Canon M6II for travel.

    • +1

Looking at camelcamecamel, it seems the r6 mark ii dropped about a grand in the 6 months since its release, so I'd expect/hope some decent price drops in the r8 to happen again

  • Out of stock / 25 sold

Amazing deal, but seems like they had only 25 in stock :(
