Just Bought one of these from Bing Lee. Very Reasonable Price compared to Sony and JB Hifi and not a grey import.

  • amazing camera. newer nex 6 is coming out…get dual lens kit for value.

    • NEX-6 is currently just a rumour. And if/when it comes out, it likely won't until the end of next year.

      • End of next year? I'll take that wager.

And, NEX 6 and the NEX 5N replacement are pretty much leaked already by various site.. I thought both were to be announced next month (according to reliable rumours/leaks)?

        • My bad, I was thinking of the next high-end NEX (i.e. then NEX-9 or whatever). Considering the 3 just got an update to the F3, it's not unlikely that the 5 will get an upgrade to the 6 by the end of the year I suppose.

  • newer 6 will be closer to 1k than $500..and there should be a newer 5 coming out as well which would result in these models being discounted. waiting for this to happen. should be in sept!

  • What are peoples thoughts on this? Whats the best point and shoot?

If you don't want an interchangeable system camera, just go with something like the canon s100 or the newer Sony rx100, heard good things about the rx100.

      • +1

Agreed. I haven't heard a bad thing said about the RX100

  • I hear both lenses are pretty ordinary performers, buying just the body and whacking on a sigma 19mm or 30mm would be better…Furthermore the lens selection is quite bad compared to m4/3.

The 16mm and 18-55mm are both actually surprisingly good kit lenses. I own and use them both. Sure, they are not as good as the Zeiss 24mm (which I also own and use 95% of the time because it's amazing), but that's a $1000 lens. The NEX 18-55mm appears to be better in both image and build quality than Canon or Nikon's equivalent kit lenses. It's all I used for a year on my NEX-5 and it was more than capable of taking high quality pictures.

The number of lenses is small compared to the huge lineups available for other cameras, but there is still a wide range of quality E-Mount lenses: 16mm, 24mm, 30mm, 50mm, 18-55mm, 55-210mm, 18-200mm. Not to mention its a cinch to get a cheapie mount converter and use just about any lens ever made with manual focus (which is pretty easy to do with focus peaking).

      • I'm sure you are right, I've no personal experience with it, only based on what I've read.

  • I went with the Panasonic GX1 over NEX5 because of lens selection, and no flash on body, must use a external flash.

If you dont need a system camera, then the RX100 is good, I tested that out too. It isn't too advanced but it isn't too "stupid".

Also I'm not sure if they fixed it, but i remember NEX5 has issues with clicking noises when using the video recording.

Why does it look so ugly in the photos?

  • difference between the 5nd and the 5n anyone?

Edit: 5nd i think is just the dual lens kit model.

DWI have a daily special on the 5N with 18-55mm lens for $589. I think this is a better deal than the binglee, as you are only paying for one ordinary lens, instead of two…Noted DWI is grey import stock, each to their own.

    • Agreed. That other lens isn't worth an extra $200 in my opinion. It's not horrible but the image quality isn't spectacular. Plus I don't see myself using the 16mm focal length too often. That's just me though.

Not that they'd ship it to Australia but just to give other people an idea, Amazon is selling the Olympus E-PL1 with kit lens for USD265. So not a great deal more than the cost of the extra lens.

    • Remember with Binglee you are getting Australian warranty. The extra money is worth it. This is an excellent camera.

I just got my RX100 this weekend and it's the real deal. It can be a point and shoot if you want it to be that but it also has a ton of settings and it'll reward you the more you learn how to use it. It's an awesome camera for someone like me who likes to nitpick image quality. There may be better cameras out there in terms of image quality but I don't think they'd be as pocketable as the RX100. I can't believe how small it is!

The NEX 5N is an excellent camera though if you want the ability to change lenses. I'm partial to Micro Four Thirds because I much prefer their lenses (in terms of image quality, size and range of lenses available). I place a great deal of importance on lenses so I'd personally go with M4/3 even if I have to start all over again but Sony does an excellent job with their camera bodies.

    • Just curious, how much you paid for it and where from? If I can unload my lx5 on a friend/loved one… think I'd like to get one for a little carry everywhere P&S.

  • Excellent camera for a good (local) price.

  • And the lenses are bigger than m43 too. Small bodies plus big lenses make them less stable to hold (front heavy).

    • The cameras are good though, and the lenses are generally ok

    • Those kit lenses are very light.

      • Yep, I had no problems using the 18-55mm lens. It might be an issue when you start using heavier lenses but for the kit lens and the primes, it shouldn't be an issue.

    • because you have small arms :)

  • Managed to bargain it down to $750 and get a Extreme Pro 16gb card for $60 and also a 3TB buffalo HD USB3.0 for $140 =]

  • fantastic camera, but have to question the "benefit" of buying local, considering Sony offer worldwide warranty for cameras under TLW:
    http://www.sony.com.au/support/resources/en_AU/html/Warranty…

    just throwing it out there…

  • This is a fantastic camera which takes excellent pictures. I've read some reviews and it said the picture quality is better then the Canon 5D in some areas considering the 5D is full frame and this is a APS-C sensor (which is found in alot of DSLR cameras). I personally have the Sony A77 and the NEX-7 which I'm extremely happy with. You can get the adaptors on the NEX5N and use all the Sony A mount lenses. There are also adaptors for Nikon and Canon lenses on the NEX cameras as well.

    • Don't forget adapters for Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander, Contax, etc.

  • Harvey Norman had this same twin lens kit in silver for $549 in one of their sales in the end of June. I am kinda kicking myself for not getting it, but on the other hand couldn't really justify it as I already have Canon 550D and Olympus E-P2.
