Wireless IP Security Camera - $59 Free Shipping from Kogan

342

Actually received two separate emails from Kogan, First email received at 8:14am shows $69 price, and the second email at 8:45am shows it $59, I think they decided to reduce the price or could be just one of their marketing tactics. Ah well, good price though.

Mod: Kogan is currently out of stock, but you can still order for 14 Sept dispatch.

  • been looking at these hoping to use one as a baby monitor… would be easy to connect via phone, Smart Tv or anything around the house…can then use it for other things when its no longer needed. 640x480 doesn't seem great though…
    any thoughts?

    • +1

I am also thinking to use it as a baby monitor. As it's got night vision, I hope it serves the purpose.

    • +1

I just used cheap Android phone or broken Android phone (screen broken ones).

    • idk what is the different but ebay ad this to me for $30 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wireless-IP-Camera-WIFI-Network-Webc…

    • +12

I have one of these and whilst it's not the kogan version, it's all similar. 640x480 is ok but frame rate drops to 15fps when using 640x480. At 15fps with the IR on at night, unless the person is stationary for long enough, you won't be able to see his/her face, it'll just be a blur. At 320 res the picture is too small to see the face as well.

What you want is IR-CUT (which means it's the newer better version)…. you get true colours during night time viewing and it turns off during daytime, this does not seem to have it. Also when it does not have IR-CUT usually indicates it's the older version which does not auto exposure. So you'll have to manually reset the camera to be able to view day and night if the camera is placed outdoors.

This version does not have .h264 so no video, only images.

IR LEDs lights up to 10m, starts to have heavy fall off at about 5m.

BTW I bought mine for $30+ from ebay some time back.

      http://www.openipcam.com/ <<< great forum.

I'd open up my ip cam for people to try out but i suspect ozbargain will just ddos my internet connection. LoL

    • 640x480 doesn't seem great though

That's about DVD resolution. Is that a problem?

    • -1

I would be concerned having a WiFi transmitter next to the baby all night every night.

      • yep, but its also wired… which id be using…

  • +2

Some idiot has been egging my car at night, you guys think this would work well in low lit areas?

    • upto 30 feet away.

    • yeah its supposed to according to the write up…
The 1/4” CMOS image sensor provides resolution up to 640×480 (VGA) and good image quality.
With 10 built in IR LEDs, this camera can capture video in night vision mode up to 30’ away.

i like how it has the android apps and

"All 270° of pan and 90° of tilt rotation can be remotely controlled through the network. IP configuration is easy with the included software."

    • yeah just make sure its not placed behind glass, because at night when these cameras are behind glass the reflection prevents you from seeing a thing!

      • (the infrared light you can't see reflects)

The other option is to cover those lights and install an infrared light outside

        • Sounds alright, have you tried it, because the swanns I have setup are not for outside use but perhaps I can try the infrared light outside, cheers

        • +1

i havent tried it personally, but i've seen quite a few youtube vids about it

    • +12

im getting one for the same reason. Lets get the F*%^kers !

    • +2

Biggest issue would be it's rated for indoor use only. So unless the car is parked in your livingroom, you'd need to point it through a window which in turn may reduce both the quality of the image as well as the strength of the IR light it spits out….. but if the car is parked nearby then maybe. You might also be able to put it in a camera dome to protect it from rain etc - although then you may need to hardwire the camera due to loss of wifi signal strength.

    • +21

      You'll never catch me.

    • +1

make sure you wash it off ASAP, eats through paint like acid

    • You'll have the problem of the IR illuminators glaring off the window glass, but potentially possible to stick it outside if no rain is coming that night.

This is a default no-name camera that is available in loads of different places for roughly the same cost. One thing not mentioned is that there is motion detection built in. When a change that's big enough is detected, the unit can email you a series of six pics. If you have your gmail account setup to ping a notification when new mail arrives, you have an alert to allow you to go tackle them. You can also, obviously, view/control from anywhere in the world.

I use Net Eye on the phone to control/view - which works fine as a widget. That way if you are using it to watch the baby, you can just leave the widget viewing.

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.safe500.ne…

      • thats sounds the go .. I want to find where that mouse is getting in.

      • @sane, couple of questions:
        - can you see the IRs glowing in the dark ?
        - can you password protect the camera so your IP address doesn't become like the inside of the Big Brother house for any wandering net user ?

    • Scrape the eggs into a frying pan, pick off the bits of shell and cook up a free omelette for breakfast.

    • You don't need a camera fella, you need a few iron pipes to throw at the egg tossers car and a baseball bat or a katana for when they hop out of the car if they even have the knackers in their pants to stop…

  • wifi b/g only

    • +2

most routers are backwards compatible… if it only needs that bandwidth then you should be fine.

  • MJPEG compression is pretty average quality and slow to update (not to mention not the most bandwidth friendly). Its ok for the price though.

  • +1

looks like this one, but this also says the kogan model is the older one …

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Wireless-WIFI-Wansview-IP-Camera-…

    this is $59.99

    • This one looks ok. Without hi-jacking thread, can anyone recommend the best wireless IP security camera for under $100?

      • Look at ebay for 720p cameras. Note if you see 0.3mp sensor in the description don't buy it. It's just a crappy sensor interpolated to become 720p and you get crappy frame rates as well.

Look for 1/3" sensors with megapixel sensors. Make sure frame rate is 25/30fps as well @ 720p.

You'll be looking at just about $100 for them.

    • +1

This is a better deal with free postage. No deal for Kogan.

  • +2

Good deal for a noname pan/tilt IP camera. Cheapest I can see elsewhere is $64.

  • will this work with PoE?

    • I don't think so.

    • -1

      Dont you mean EoP

      • I actually hadn't considered powerline networking ip cams until I read this, such a good idea (esp for hard to cable/temp setups).

      • +2

        "Dont you mean EoP"
        I don't think he did.
You mean Ethernet over Power, and device (at each end) that takes a network connection and transmits it through a building via the existing electrical wiring. I don't see why it would matter, the resolution seem quite low so bandwidth shouldn't be an issue otherwise EoP should not be a consideration to the device should it?

the GP referenced PoE Power over Ethernet pretty much the opposite idea. He was asking if those with PoE routers/switches would be able to use a single network cable to power and receive data from the device - this would be handy in reducing cabling especially if the location is not near existing power (as it would involve an electrician).

Both valid questions I don't know why you were negged vs clarified.

Looking forward to EoP devices that support PoE … EoPoE??

    • Yes it will if you are willing to splice the original cable and use an adaptor at both ends. :P

Add code INFINITE for another little saving

    • Beat me to it by 30 seconds !!!!

    • Doesnt work.

    • +1

Try KGNCOOP5 - this is showing $2.95 off for me :)

  • +1

Apply code Infinite for a further small discount, it's not a lot but still something

  • +11

cool, yet another product I didn't need until I saw it on OB

  • damn i missed out on the $1.42 saving :(

    • Try KGNCOOP5 - this is showing $2.95 off for me :)

  • i bought one of these last week from kogan for $59.
you can get them for about $5 cheaper on ebay… how ever the 2 - 3 week wait and no warranty isn't worth the extra few dollars. would buy more but not sure how good these are… anyone used these yet and got some good feedback to share?

  • Damn.. ozbargained! Sold out already :(

  • i just cleared one from my cart i was holding, hope someone gets it. lol

  • anyone know if the computer must be on to remote browse the video from work using firefox? don't need recording but need to be able to see what happen at home at work hours.

    • connects direct to your router, no computer needed.

  • I've been watching for this deal on ebay for a while. Just because I need two, this seems to be a better deal for me: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270749108647

    • that's probably the same supplier that kogan is getting his from lol

  • +1

september 14 dispatch. that is probably important

anyways, cheaper from china and probably on ebay eg $55 http://www.buyincoins.com/new_en/details/webcam-wireless-pan…

  • "INFINITE"

    doesnt work now

    • "KGNCOOP5" works for $2.95 off

  • This is probably the same cam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTIammEuLSM

Btw, I use this Android app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.weclay.net…. as a baby monitor. I use my tablet as the cam and my phone as the viewer (my tablet is wifi only and I need my phone with me always). I only use it during my kid's nap time though and of course no IR light but it's only $4.24. BUT it could be a bit buggy at times so wether it's worth or not at that price is debatable.

  • got mine on ebay for $50 delivered.
    works a treat.
iphone app is bad, u need to buy the ip camera one for $3-4ish.

  • +1

I got one from China web site. Use it fine when at home through wifi. If try to use it from the web not at home. It need use either static ip address, or dynamic ip address. My house internet provider only give us static ip address, so I can only use the static ip address method. I spend lots of time to try. finally I can access that camera when I at work. It work fine for a while. Now I don't know why I can not access it when at work place. only 2 days ago I can access once only then no good again. If I at home using my house wifi to access it there is no problem, but can not access it again from outside world (work place). I still try to found out why? Very time consuming to test.

    • +1

Your configuration is possibly off. Make sure you're using static IP for the camera and not dhcp. Specify the router and subnet mask correctly. Also enable UPNP, it'll make life easier.

  • It says "DC Power Supply" which mean you need to have a power point close by. Do you know how long is the DC power cord?

Is the power cord weather proof if it's used outdoor?

    • It's short. About 2m if i recall. I bought some speaker wires and spliced into the connectors. Wired it outside. If you're not handy with that kinda stuff look for "foscam extension cable" on ebay. It usually is the same connector, but do make sure it's the same size before buying.

  • What brand are these sorry?

I have 3 original Foscam and they are great

    • Most likely from the same manufacturer of Foscams, just unbranded or something along those lines.

      • This or buy another Foscam for a extra $40 odd

        • Buy the new 720p cams. I've tried it out… it's awsome. Allows for SD card recording video clips and downloading the clips. I've just ordered 4 @ $100 each delivered via DHL.

        • You can buy Some cheap cameras from DX and Foscam firmware is able to be loaded. Everyday price is $62 for a very compatable cam. Are these Kogans able to be updated to foscam firmware? This deal does not appear to be much of a bargain.

Zeomega, do you have a link 720P sounds good, im looking at a quality cam, otherwise it maybe worth building one.

        • Iv been looking everywhere for the foscam 720p cams and can only find them cheapest for $133 from China. Can u give a link?

        • Not all can be updated with foscam firmware.

        • Aliexpress have them starting from $72 USD. e.g :
          http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/609168446-720P-wireless…

        • +1

No this one is a 300K sensor, not worth it.

Im looking forward to the Raspberry Pi 5MP cam. http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/308990,raspberry-pi-getti… with some Arduino modules to control the cam. May also be able to put one of these hi res webcams http://webcam-review.toptenreviews.com/ on a Raspberry Pi.

        • Ah sorry, yes you're right, that's a 300k sensor…. The raspberry pi cam sounds great.

        • Careful only some compatible ip cameras will take Foscam firmware. If you try it and it fails it will render your camera useless !

        • I bought an Aliexpress camera and they sent me one "similar" to the advertisement. It has a fixed aerial (it you cant change to a higher gain antenna) and has average colour.

      • My ip camera is made in the same factory as the Tenga (in Shenzhen, China) but thats where the similarities stop. Casing maybe similar also.

Hardware is different, aerial is not removable. There is no support. No firmware upgrade. There is no "brand" on it.

  • +1

Damn you batrarobin! You didn't get me to buy this camera but you got me researching… and watching youtube videos… and checking eBay…
And an hour later I've bought this:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mini-DV-DVR-808-16-V2-Lens-B-Vide…

    • That one isn't a wireless IP cam.

      • +3

        Thanks, Captain Obvious!

        • +1

          Anytime!

  • Looks like a Foscam camera.

  • How does it "record straight to your computers hard drive"?

    • Needs a direct line of site from the cam to your hard drive. no doors, walls or computer tower cases in the way. MUST BE STRAIGHT.

      • haha - the software records the video "straight" to the hard disk

  • Damn, it's been ozbargained.

  • Biggest problem with this cam…. MJPEG. decent price but its better paying a bit more and getting a cam that supports H.264

  • m

  • Sold Out

  • +1

well that took me less than 1 minute to find cheaper http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Wireless-Audio-IP-White-IR-LE…

    • +2

Mate, your is a white one that's why it's cheaper. Same as cars. ;)

      • not sure why white is a disadvantage with an indoor camera — unless the inside of your house is painted black, white is most likely the best colour to camouflage it.

  • Stock sold out at 11:26am. You can now purchase for 14th September dispatch. (Kogan)

  • +4
  • Anyone have a link to this or a better cam in action on youtube?

I'm thinking of buying a better one but wondering how it looks on the iphone?

    Thanks

  • The problem with the Kogan and other "cheap no brand name" ip cams

    1. Poor colour (especially at night) and poor sound quality
    2. Average Wifi reception (it is not possible with all cameras to replace the existing aerial and install a high gain antenna. NB some IP cameras need an adapter to use an antenna from a router)
    3. No IR Filter (see other comments on what this means)
    4. Are not usually firmware upgradeable. If you try loading genuine Foscam firmware onto a non Foscam brand camera you may "kill" it.
    5. Slow pan/tilt
    6. Supplied software is limited and may not work with other brands of cameras
    7. The functions to control the ip camera available within the embedded web server are limited / or just dont work
    8. May not be supported by 3rd party software.
    9. May not come with a power supply with an AU plug
    10. Lense may not be upgradable to a wide angle/other angle of lense.
    11. Limited to no warranty
    12. No technical support (unless you can speak Mandarin or write Chinese)

I recommend Blue Iris 3 by Perspective Software. It's not free (it is reasonably priced) but works with a large number of brands and generic ip cameras. It also has good software support.

There are lots of free ip camera software available for Android and iPhone. You will need to configure your router and open a port and configure you ip cam software so that your camera is viewable from your smart phone or external web browser.

I also recommend Foscam cameras http://store.mangocam.com/. Please note on eBay, Dinodirect, DFX, etc there are many many Foscam copies. They all look similar BUT that's where the similarities stop. Some have fixed unremovable aerials.
