  • IMHO it is a deal 🤝

If you want good battery life, get the AMD versions of this laptop.

The 13500H only has 4P cores, has a base TDP of 45w, with a max of 95W.

The AMD versions have either 6 or 8 full performance cores, with a base TDP of 15w.

    • I would prefer the Ryzen as well, will I miss the OLED screen though?

      • you might also miss the thunderbolt 4, dealbreaker IMHO for any productivity laptop

        • +4

          why is TB4 critical?

          • +6

@matt-ozb: You lose ability to add external GPUs, fast external storage speed or daisy chain monitors.

USBC docks are quite limited with what monitors you can connect externally

The specs for this laptop specifically mention display port alt mode as it's optional for usb 3.2 ports so some other laptops can leave some users out to dry if they expected to use the usbc ports for displays

USB4 has been available for AMD laptops (for more than a year now) so would go for that in this day and age and not compromise on not having thunderbolt

The larger retailers like Bing Lee and JB Hifi have the OLED version

        https://www.binglee.com.au/products/zenbook-14-led-14-ryzen-…

If you want Thunderbolt, for whatever reason, just look for ones with USB4(similar thing) without the Intel MDF dollars.

        • The listing on Bing Lee is a bit confusing, on the left, stating

          Screen Definition: Full HD, FHD

and the main listing (right side),

          14" 2.8K OLED NanoEdge touchscreen

on JB Hi-Fi, for the same model, stating

          14" 2.8K (2880 x 1800) OLED 550nits touchscreen display

          Is it a 2.8K screen?

That's using a far inferior processor from 2021 (yes, you heard me right). The 13500H offers 25% more single core and 52% more multi core performance, they're simply not comparable. The display is also slower (60 Hz vs 120 Hz in the OP).

          • @dogsryummy: Aren’t the Ryzen 7000 series the latest Gen or am I missing something?

            • +3

@FireRunner: The three iterations of Ryzen 7000 from Zen 3, Zen 3+ and Zen 4 in terms of the architecture. All the manufactures do this to because their product lines are always getting refreshed/refined. Main advantage AMD, all architectures, has over Intel at the moment, is much better performance per watt and integrated graphics. Hence the AMD versions will get much better battery life compared to the Intel versions. Those trying to quote Intel performance don't mention how much energy it consumes and how bad the battery life can get.

          • +1

@dogsryummy: Where are you getting these numbers from? You are comparing a processor that has a TDP of 95W+ at peak, the 13500H, to a processor which has TDP of 25/30w at peak, the AMD Ryzen U series CPU. The Intel processor needs to consumes more than 3x as much energy to have any performance advantage that you are quoting. Therefore, the Intel CPU will basically hammer your battery. If you want to have the performance advantage you are quoting, the Intel CPU will need to have access to a power point throughout the day.

@shellshocked: I'm plugged in all the time anyhow. battery will be fine for the 5% of the time I'm not given ability to config the output to low performance as needed. fast ram, fast ssd, fast cpu matter to me as well as 4K 60hz video out and high res oled with fast 120hz refresh rate are icing on the proverbial cake.
also I'm considering the placement of touchpad centered to keyboard in this 14x but not in larger displays in series.

        • That one doesn’t have usb4 does it?
Does it miss out on anything else (apart from a slightly small screen)

      • +1

        you will miss oled screen

Isn’t is a H suffix vs a U suffix processor? I thought they were different classes in terms of power and performance

      • +5

They are, this over-the-top idolisation of a 2.5 year old U-series processor is nuts

They're two separate categories of product

    • does the amd version output 4k 60?

    • +2

Just FYI that the Ryzen 7730U is Zen3 (Ryzen 5000) with Vega 12, two gens old.

AMD changed laptop naming, each year they add on the front digit, with the generation being the third number.

Specs look great, especially the OLED, but I keep buying laptops and then selling them because i don't use them enough to justify keeping them. My tablet/chromebook/2-in-1 journey took about 10 devices before I finally settled on a refurb Surface Pro 5 that I got for about $280 with keyboard in great condition and battery life, and then got a Surface Pen for $50. Upgraded to Win 11. Grabbed a 400TB U3 micro sd for $10 on Ali after using vouchers. Now I think I'm finally happy because I paid jack shit for it and I can just chuck it around without worrying.

    • I would worry about burn in with OLED, as well as longevity.

      • That's not what I'm worried about. I don't treat my electronics very well. I had a Galaxy S21 Ultra that went through 4 tempered glass UV-applied protectors and about 5 cases including an Otterbox and still managed to smash the cameras and scratch the screen. I traded it in for a S23 Ultra that now has individual protectors for each lens, and a 3-part case with integrated screen protector. I ran over my previous phone, a Note 9, with my car twice. I know laptop != phone, but you get the idea.

      • +1

nah not with laptops they not bright enough, i had an oled laptop for years no burn in at all.

        • I thought burn in happens with static images? Like if it's not moving? (e.g., the Taskbar)

Nice deal but I'm going to wait for the new ryzen 7040 coming out in the next few months.

    • Same, though the 780 igpu doesn't seem to benchmark that well

  • No gaming VGA? and 120hz?

  • Ah I'm not quite ready to buy a new one but this looks like a decent deal. Still tossing up between a Macbook Air M2 and Metabox/Lenovo/Asus. Likely to be occasionally running Altium (which can run in a Win VM on Mac not too bad).

  • the price has now increased.
