Definitely don't get the Stihl one then! Hahah

  • The rose pruner would be more handy.. id use a recip saw if i had to saw something bigger.

    • The rose pruner is/was a great deal for $180. Not so fit to cut branches above 25mm tho. Also OP's will be handy to cut faster or cut branches in smaller bits once on the ground. Why not both recip and chain pruner !

Maybe they are price beating the crappy looking one in the Mitre 10 catalogue?

Bought and I don't even have a big tree in my garden!

    • +2

      That's the spirit

    • +3

      But your neighbors do!

      • +11

        But your neighbours did.

Just bought one and used it to cut down a little tree and it was WAY better thatn I thought. I just bought some WD-40 chain lubricant and it was super simple. Cut through a 15cm trunk with a breeze even though it's not rated for it.

  • -1

What does this do that my hedge trimmer can't? Other than its smaller, but then why not just use some snips?

    • +1

Can a hedge trimmer cut through a 14cm trunk?

      • -2

how many 14cm trunks are you cutting down on the reg?

        • +2

Most likely more than your trimmer lol

My doctor says I have the wrists of a ninety year old, for reasons that I presume are utterly unrelated to the five years I spent as a single man during the peak of my sexual development…

  • Thanks OP! I've jumped for this!

  • For those concerned about oiling the chain, I have this pruning saw:
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-cordless-6-15cm-ga…

Amazing tool. Can replace the blade pretty easily. I'm still using a Diablo blade I bought at the same time.

This is different to a reciprocating saw because it has a spring clamp that holds the branch still so it can be cut.

    • Interesting! Thanks for sharing. So Ryobi make 2 very different tools that basically do the exact same job.

      • +1

Personally I'd rather use a recip saw (which essentially what this is with a 'hook') which can be used for multiple other purposes too. These things feel like unnecessary kitchen gadgets designed for one job and contributing to clutter… any my 2c

        • Yep recip is so versatile. I forgot to add that I have a LOT of tall silversheens in my backyard, so being lighter and easier to handle with one hand whilst on a ladder was also a factor in getting this.

  • +1

Perfect timing I don't need it

  • +1

Finally a portable tool I can keep in the car to deal with Extinction Rebellion road blocks!

  • I just use my recip saw. No oiling needed and works well for the same size branches this is designed for

    • Cuts in the same amount of time though?

  • Needed a battery and charger so got a cheap tool too!!

These can also do the job, and it doesn't need oiling either. Can cut branches upto the length of the blade.

May the 4th be with you.

  • I've had the Ryobi ONE+ hedge trimmer for about 4 years, we're on a rural property and have several long and quite tough hedges and it gets quite a workout, so I oil the blades after each use - it's a easy job, I just use a small bottle of Singer sewing machine oil. Drizzle a small amount of oil along the blades, run it for about 10 seconds, put the cover on it, and done. You don't need to use much, we've had that bottle since long before we moved here 5 years ago - it's an ideal size for doing the job and it's refillable, so could always refill with chainsaw oil or similar for this pruning saw.

    • Would the oil splatter all over hands and clothes?

      • Not that I've experienced - with the hedge trimmer, I only oil it after use, and the bottle I use has a very fine nozzle to apply the oil. Running the trimmer for a short time after applying the oil helps distribute it throughout the blade mechanisms, and I've never had any issues at all with it splattering.

I also have the One+ 18V chainsaw which gets a lot of use too, it has an oil reservoir, and you press a button to apply oil periodically as you're using it - it does tend to leak when hung up on a wall, so I always keep the cover on it when stored, but I've never had an issue with it either as far as oil splattering anywhere when I'm using it.

  • Concerned about finding a replacement chain for this. Manual states:

    Manufacturer OREGON
    *Chain 80BX030XTR
    *Bar 637969
    Manufacturer RYOBI
    *Chain: RCHC6
    *Bar: 319739005

Can't find any of these on Google

    • Had the same concern, and asked the Ryobi rep when I collected mine today. He said it’s coming in a few months. Worst case a local mower / Stihl shop could custom cut and rivet one.

      • Hold up.

We though you were the Ryobi rep!

I can't be the only one who noticed that the Ryobi ONE range and the first Matrix movie came out in the same year…

  • Still lots of stock at Bunnings Maribyrnong. Can confirm the Ryobi tools tend of drink chain oil and splatter it everywhere. I have the chain saw pole attachment.

None the less I picked one up. Great deal

  • +1

Make sure you check the installation of the chain! Mine was installed the wrong way round! (Maybe that's the reason why they get many returns and is so cheap.)

    • Check the first comment on the Bunnings product page - that's exactly it

  • +1

If you look at the Ryobi page for this they say 'Prune branches up to 145 mm diameter' and a bit later 'cuts through branches up to 100 mm in diameter' in the opening blurb so unclear which is correct
    https://www.ryobi.com.au/products/details/ryobi-18v-one-hp-b…

    • Most likely 145mm for green and 100mm for dry. But yeah it's not clear.

  • Good deal
I bought this and the hedge trimmer for $227 and have already sold the 2 batteries and chargers for $130…Happy with that end price for both of these items

I used this one this morning and it cut through some decent sized bush trunks. It did not struggle with any of them.

  • I just returned a 2000w ozito electric saw because it was next to useless. I can't imagine this being of much use..

    • +2

Different tool, different brand, different power source.

      Interesting logic…

  • +1

Thanks for the post OP grabbed one and used it today, works a treat especially with WD-40 sprayed every 10 or so cuts as per the previous suggestions.

There is a little bit of vibration on some branches (hollow like bamboo seems particularly bad) and the safety button can be awkward to hold down while operating. Other than that I'd give it 5/5 especially for this price.

I do worry about the chain being proprietary. Anyone want to guess how much Ryobi will wack us for a new one once they're available?

Edit: it seems like WD-40 is too thin to be used as a bar oil alternative, not tacky enough even for relatively low RPM tools like this. I might try some vegetable oil in a squeeze sauce bottle instead.

  • Picked up one of these and I'm incredibly impressed. Worked amazingly well to cut back a very overgrown mulberry tree.Much easier than using a full size chainsaw in a precarious location. Put some chain and bar oil into an old 50ml hand sanitizer bottle and added a few drops every now and then.

    • +1

I agree, cut a tree this morning and it would have been truly painful with a recip saw. Well worth the money.

    • Do you need to oil the whole chain each time or just a section of the chain?

      • +1

Just a few drops on the chain and then you can spin it slowly to spread it around

        • Thank you

  • Link is broken but it does appear on the Bunnings site under a search. But you're unable to see product details. Maybe it's ending ?

  • Deal still available in store if there’s stock. You’ll see the orange ticket showing the sale price (even though not shown online). Promo finishes 14/5/23. I picked up a kit today.

    • Can you share the product number , It’s in stock in my store but they need a product number

      • I have a photo of the ticket but I’m unsure which one is the product number. Do you know how to upload photos?

        • I/N number , for photos you will need to use sites like imgur and then share link here

          All good it’s I/N: 0429953

          • @Ehty: Ok that helps.
            Item number is: 0429953

I don’t have imgur. DM with details if you need the picture and I can text or email it to you.

            Cheers

Bought this Ryobi Katana for Mother’s Day today and it was still $128. Will be for both my parents to use but seemed like a good Mother’s Day gift. Both were happy even when I pointed out the slight inconvenience of having to manually oil it.

Also, lol at them calling it a katana, they should have gone with tantō…
