Question for HSBC Global Currency Account & Citibank Online Plus / Global Currency Holders Who Have Recently Travelled to Japan

Hi guys,

I have been receiving conflicting information about fee-free ATM withdrawal at 7-11 ATMs in Japan.

In 2018, Citi Global Currency / Citibank Plus holders would get fee-free ATM withdrawal at 7-11 ATMs in Japan. I am assuming this is still the case today. If someone can confirm, it would be greatly appreciated.

I was assuming this is also the case with HSBC Global Currency (JPY) account given money would be taken directly from the JPY account, similar to Citibank.

However, one of my friends who have just been there reported that 220 Yen fee was charged for HSBC Global Currency JPY ATM withdrawal BUT eftpos (Debit) remained free.

I am not sure whether an error was committed or things have changed.

Could someone please confirm if ATM Fee-Free withdrawals at 7-11 ATMs are available for HSBC Global Currency account holders in Japan?

Regards

Zz

Citibank is still free. Just got back from Osaka and Kyoto yday, took money out from 7-11 ATMs.

    • Is that the citi transaction plus debit account ?

      • I am assuming Citibank Online Plus. Citibank Global Currency Yen Account should also be free but that account will disappear soon.

    • Thank you. Boo to HSBC then!

  • It's the standard ATM access fee for cash withdrawals throughout Japan. 110 yen for under 10,000 yen withdrawals, 220 yen for anything over. No additional fees are charged by HSBC.

Edit: I'm using HSBC Everyday Global Visa at Seven Bank ATMs, withdrawing in yen. Might be different for Mastercard users.

    • Your scenario is exactly what I am looking for.

So it is 220Yen then. Citibank remains the winner then.

  • HSBC always charge fee for ATM withdrawals overseas. There is no fee-free transactions.

    • Not true. I took monies from HSBC ATM in Singapore and Indonesia recently and they were free.

      • OK. If you are using the HSBC ATM, that is true without fee. But HSBC does not exist everywhere in the world. And OP is referring to the Seven bank in Japan.

Citibank is still free from 711 Bank ATMs - but so are all foreign debit MasterCards. e.g. Macquarie Bank (I tried this recently). Visa debit card will get charged the 110/220 yen fee.

    • Ahhh…. so this is the key!

  • I was wanting to know the same as in 2018, I used Citibank Plus and withdrawals were free from 7/11 and no exchange fees. I hear more people talk about other cards like Wise, HSBC etc but haven't mentioned too much about citibank so I was worried it wasn't going to be fee free withdrawals now. Thanks for confirming it still works at 7/11!

  • Unfortunately, the Citibank Global Currency Debitcard is coming to an end :( i've been using this to withdraw JPYs from the 7-11 ATMs in Japan fee-free.

So, is there a direct substitute when the citibank global currency feature ends (Eg: withdrawing JPY in Japan 7-11 ATM fee-free) ?

  • Unfortunately HSBC Global Currency uses the VISA payment network. The ability to add a virtual Suica card to Apple Pay on your iPhone allows you to (indirectly) pay for most things in Japan with a credit card - avoiding ATM withdrawal fees, withdrawal limits with some cards, etc. However, since late last year charging the Suica card in Apple Pay no longer works with foreign-issued Visa cards - only works with Mastercard and Amex. This might be one reason for not relying only on the HSBC card - or not preloading it with too much JPY.

    • Has that been resolved?

      • Nope
