Seems like a pretty good deal.

Cheapest I have seen ever. Handy for those cheap HDDs from Amazon

  • Only usb 3.1 gen 1? (Aka usb 3.0)

    • +2

It's only a SATA connection anyway. SATA 3 has a theoretical max speed of 6 Gb/sec.

Doesn't seem to be a fan in this unit. I imagine it'll get a bit toasty inside.

  • Hopefully, during the incineration process

Looks aside, I'm not seeing the advantage over this $40 one: https://www.mwave.com.au/product/simplecom-sd422-dual-bay-us… (plus a cable if USB-C is necessary).

thank you do u recomend this? is mwave in qld or can u also find me one for umart

          • @DarkSide: Well, it's the one I personally use with a couple of 8TB drives. Seems to work well enough. There's plenty of other options in the same price range. Looks like Umart has a slightly different model, https://www.umart.com.au/product/simplecom-sd312-2-5-3-5in-d…

As far as I can tell, the main advantage of the one in this Aliexpress deal is it looks nicer, as an enclosure rather than a dock. Whether that's worth the extra $40…

            • @elusive: whats your thoughts on wavlink

              • @DarkSide: Not used them myself but these things all use one of maybe 3 or 4 common chips anyway. So it probably performs similarly?

              • @DarkSide: The Wavlinks are great. It's a pretty simple device, so not much to write about.

                Haven't tried the dupe function.

      Looked at those.

Got mine as it's going in a small pigeon hole along with my tiny PC. It wouldn't fit. Also the dust.

Also it appears you can quickly erase and clone. Wouldn't want any accidents.

      5gbs v 6gbs, aluminium v plastic

I would definitely keep an eye on the temperature of your drives especially if you are copying a lot of data across at once. Putting this inside a pigeon hole won't help.

        • Ive had an old apple OWC aluminium enclosure. No fan. Still working after 13 years. Never had any drive issues. Just used it for media.

      • +1

Fair enough, if the physical size or orientation is a requirement.

I can see why the clone button can be a concern. FWIW it does need to be held down, but it would've been better to not have it.

Note that yours is also 5 Gbps max. That's the speed limit of USB 3.0/3.1gen1/etc. There's no getting around that without going to 3.1gen2.

Materials… eh. Comes back to whether you care about looks. Since the drives are exposed and vertical, cooling isn't as much of a problem.

  • Seems to support up to 10TB HDDs for up to 20TB total capacity, which might be a bummer for those who bought 10+ TB drives. The mwave linked one by @elusive doesn't seem to have that issue.

  • Apart from the quality of the SATA-USB interface, the quality and longevity of the Power Supply Adapter (AC-DC) 12V4A will be crucial to the who thing. The Support Capacity: 20TB Max probably means that if you install two 3.5" HDs, the maximum power the adapter can provide is 12V x 4A = 48W. I'm not sure if that limitation is referred to their SATA-USB interface design.

The power requirement of a Seagate 20TB HD in the latest Seagate deal is about 15W. All the numbers are of course theoretically estimated. The manufacturers have to design their products well above these numbers.

I've been using Unitek product a long time and they seem OK in terms of their supplied power adapter (12V2A). Good luck!
