MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk Wi-Fi Motherboard + AMD Ryzen 5 7600X 6-Core AM5 CPU Bundle $699 + Delivery @ Mwave

370

The MSI Tomahawk is a decent board with a wide range of I/O ports. I really needed the wifi and optical audio out. The number of USB ports are high too.
I've been checking its reviews and so far there have been no red flags.

The bundle deal beats their separate prices.

I'd probably get a DDR5 6000mhz kit from amazon to pair with this. It seems to the cheapest option atm.

Thought this was a good deal. Though, Have you guys bought stuff from mwave recently? I wasn't sure whether to post this since I have heard a few negative views against them.

Will it melttttttt, Will it melt.

    • I reckoned only affecting 3D V cache CPUs?

      • +1

All CPU's now, makes me worry about my 7600X.

        • +2

          Just update your mobo BIOS.

          • +2

            @trippy: What about existing damage?

          • @trippy: this issue only started happening after the x3d launch, so its possible its an agesa update that is the cause

            • +1

@PensionerXXL: Not really. Just MB vendors trying to get an edge over each other pushing voltages when they shouldn't to try and get the benchmark score to show they are better.

              • @shellshocked: I didnt think upping the ram voltage for expo would get better bench results?

Rofl ffs. Nuking everyones chips and boards for scores 😅

          • +3
            • @Daemonic: My understanding is that AMD are using AGESA as a mechanism to stop motherboard manufacturers running out of spec/high voltage.

            • @Daemonic: I think its because AMD themself have said they are not sure if its a 100% fix, as more testing and samples required. They think this will help.

    • It shouldn't given you run the latest bios. The 3dvcache chips seem to be the majority of those reports. For peace of mind I'd undervolt just a tad bit.

      • -2

For peace of mind I'd undervolt just a tad bit.

So actually buy something that you have to cripple from day one and can't even run at stock without worrying?

        • +2

If you think undervolting is crippling a CPU, you don't know what it is! Anyway motherboard vendors have released updates addressing this.

        • I wouldn't call a undervoled chip as "cripple". There are times when undervolting is beneficial as it amounts to the same level of performance while consuming less power.
This is just a suggestion for peace of mind till substantiated facts arise that this chip is also subject to frequent meltdowns - which to my best of knowledge is not the same issue as the 3d chips. Its a temporary "just to be safe" option, not a "you need to do this".

          • @Marxus: You both missed my point, ok maybe "cripple" wasn't the better choice of words, but having to tinker with a brand new product in hopes it won't melt isn't acceptable.

Anyway, AMD is apparently looking into it along with board manufacturers.

        • Undervoting is where you try and get the same performance with a little less power draw. But yes you would hope you dont have to do it stock to survive. But there are a few people out there now that do tune it the moment they get it for lower power draw and hopefully lower temps as well.

      • +1

        Question (and before I shoot, just letting you know I'm dumb with computers etc but want to check something) ;
Undervolting what exactly? The supply to a component that "melts? “
What is this to fix, a "melting" known issue?
        P=I^2 x R, and V=IR
Current causes heat. Excess voltage breaks down insulation.
If there's a heating issue I'm not certain lowering volts to a component that uses a specific power would help.
That is, lowering V causes current I to increase. Square that to get a large increase in power used, and therefore heat.
Not an issue if the original problem is insulation breakdown due to voltage!

        • You are correct there. Just undervolting the CPU will not guarantee that the processor use less power in all cases.

That's why for cases like this, I would still suggest making sure you run the correct latest bios as the first crucial step. Undervolting is suggested just as a way to take your temps down for general use as we are all really freaked out of high temps this gen.

      • The latest BIOS doesn't address non 3D SKUs. In this instance I would just manually override the SOC to 1.2-1.3v for peace of mind.

    • Only if you are overclocking an X3D CPU, which AMD has advised shouldn't be overclocked like the 5800x3d before it. Considering all the MB vendors have released updates to prevent this recently it pretty much fixed from a select few CPUs that had issues.

Happens to all 7000 series, 3d or not.
Even ones with no overclocking have been reported. Think its more a case by case thing at the moment.

        • Official statements, and those reported with the issue so far are those overclocking X3D beyond spec. Considering the number of AMD CPUs sold per week, it's not even a blip on the radar.

          • @shellshocked: The linked video is to a 7900x.
AMD are still unsure if it works for non x3d and are working with motherboard vendor on testing and fixes.

            • +2

@AIbot: A single 7900x from a well known YouTube overclocker. How many 7900x have been out in the wild for 6 months since the launch of the 7000 series. They have been in the hands of many professional overclockers around the world without mention of the issue. The issue has only arisen since the launch of the X3D from a few posts on Reddit.

              • @shellshocked: He has users who watch the channel report and are sending to him, same as GN. Its not just a single 7900x but a few x chips now. Like said by AMD themself, they are still looking into it. Maybe watch the video i linked in full.

Downvoted for making a joke that has some truth to it, must defend company that does not care about me, and have to defend what i buy because i buy it it and now it has to be the best ( even if it is it will no longer be in 6 months as both red and blue bring out more stuff) and i will attack anyone one in a public forum, video comments or a place where nothing i say matters like reddit where there are bound to be people different or like something else. I wont except that and will defend the company that only uses me to make a cult like following to give me more money. Waaagh, right a book.

Max redemption reached on the additional $30 off AM5 bundles coupon, I wonder if that's intentional. Would be $669 with it.

Also, you should also slap the word wifi onto the end of the board name there, as that's how MSI are naming it. 'MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI', no I don't know why they're yelling.

    • Agreed. I tried the additional discount and it didn't work for me too.

  • This seems pretty good considering I was looking at getting an AM4 bundle for around $650 (32GB RAM, 5700X and Tomahawk B550).

I guess it's worth around the extra $250-300 to go AM5…

Edit: or throw that $250-300 into a tier higher GPU… Hmm

  • Anyone recommend a good cooler to pair with this combo?

    • +2

For an air cooler the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120/120SE or Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120/120SE is best bang for buck by far.

If you're after a liquid AIO then any 240mm or 280mm that takes your fancy, nearly everyone uses Asetek for the pump so its just choice of price, fans and features (RGB or LCD screen etc) that you'd enjoy. I'd would personally recommend the Arctic Freezer II or EKWB AIO.

  • Would this come with a key for Jedi Survivor?

    • Yep, MWave are participating in the deal, you can view it when looking at the 7600X directly.

You receive a redemption code within 7 days of purchasing and then activate on AMD's Rewards website.

    Nice deal OP.

Just curious, what are you using the optical out for? Anything audiophile? I'm using a Schiit Asgard with DAC, but this just requires USB.

I just got a new build with B550 Tomahawk and noticed it has optical out too.

    • +1

Its for my bookshelf speakers. I have some 'stuff' that I fear will interfere with analog signals so wanted to be safe. I also really want to get a Hifi amp at one point.

      • Nice! In the lounge room I'm using a 2nd hand Cambridge Topaz SR20 which I really like with some old Polk floor speakers. The Topaz SR20 has 2x Optical in's which are great coming off my Android TV box. It's 100W RMS a side, so it'll easily drive bookshelves. Might be a bit large in size and overkill for bookshelves though.

My PC is in my office though, so will stick to headphones here.

        • Sweet! Yea the optical is a overkill, I'm just getting it to combat the static. Though I'm thinking of getting some floor speakers too, maybe from the used market.

  • do 7xxx cpu's come with stock coolers these days or do you need to buy one separately?

    • The "X" cpus don't come with a cooler, the non "X" cpus still come with the stock cooler

  • My B450 max is still going strong, great boards for cheap and brand.

I never bother with built in WiFi, not usually worth the premium and something like the ASUS PCE-AX3000 Wireless-AX is great (full bars of signal with my router).

    • I would note that the integrated wifi on this board is 6E capable, so at least there's that.

      • That's not bad for built in, they should all have it really.

  • haven't had any issues with this board with a 7900x,

  • This or i5-13600k ?
I never have amd based system before so dunno much about it.
Has been intel + nvidia .. but looking at from value perspective seems amd is winning ?

    • +2

12th and 13th gen Intel are on a dead platform. The next generation Intel CPUs will require a new motherboard either later this year or in 2024. That will limit your upgrade options.

AM5 is just starting out, and if it lasts as long as AM4, will support a few CPU upgrades in the next few years.

From a technical perspective AMD currently has the fastest gaming CPU overall with the 7800X3D. It is also the one of the most power efficient. So if you are mainly gaming and want something that will last you a while that is the best option. Otherwise chose one the non X Ryzen 7000 CPU options for the best performance per watt for productivity and gaming.

  • MSI personally for me are ticking time bombs

    • Lol what happened?

No issues what so ever in 3y for me (b450 Mortar Max, 2060s). If anything my last build with a gigabyte board eventually stuffed up, couldn't pin point the error either.

      • Three premium boards I had eventually wouldn't post - across chipsets/sockets/brands, despite repeated attempts at BIOS flashing, nothing. Just my experience

        • +1

          Fair enough, that bad luck.
Guess diy PC's don't last forever.

  • +2

Slightly cheaper at BPC Tech with MAY10 discount code, $678.60 + $5 shipping = $683.60.

    • Thank you!

      Got the following for $576.40:

      AMD Ryzen 5 7600X Processor
      MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI AM5 M-ATX Motherboard

      Not too bad!
