Is Breville Dual Boiler at $1k Gone for Ever?

Finally decided to get the Breville Dual Boiler (BES920).

GoodGuys claim to have it in stock at 999 so after failing to find any deals, I got out the credit card.

But they don’t actually have any in Perth - the only WA store with stock is Geraldton which is 4 hours away. They have some “on display” at other stores, but none that I can buy. They won’t deliver.

Now I really started to look hard and as far as I can see, I can’t get this (in WA) anywhere for close to 999 at a reputable store.

Anybody have any suggestions or am I SOL.

  • Call the Geraldton store direct and ask them for shipping

    • Good idea, will try tomorrow.

Or maybe try offering to buy display stock - is that even a thing?

    • i've been trying to get my hands on a new dual boiler in melb, no one has stock. googling "breville dual boiler no stock" brought me to this page…

the geraldton store had two in stock, agreed to match the corporate price and they're going to ship one to us! thanks for your post :)

I'm planning my next upgrade from Grinder Pro and Dedica Arte. Why dual boiler and not an automated machine? You can get automated machines that will do everything, even steam milk, for $1000. I had to make six coffees at once for a small group today and it was kind of a drag on a manual machine.

      superautomatics make awful coffee

      • Has to be better than my Delonghi Dedica, right? Is it really terrible, where did you try an auto machine, where can I try one?

        • Most of my experience with the superautomatic is at hotel breakfasts but I suspect that's exacerbated because they're neither maintained nor use good beans. Have a Jura in the office but haven't used it in a long time.

Also bought an Oracle to replace my BDB+SGP to save space but ended up giving that to my folks - this one I had full control of, but I found the automatic steam wand to be making too much foam in all settings and just didn't feel right using it in manual mode. The grinder's also no better than the SGP.

In terms of trying it out, would suggest looking for a specialty coffee equipment showroom that supplies to cafes as well as offices. They can talk you through the differences and maybe give you a few cups to sample.

Edit: You're definitely right on the ease of use though! BUT cleaning the milk steaming is particularly painful on the automatics, and having a dual boiler is great for making multiple coffees because you don't need to waiting for the boiler to keep changing temperature.

        • As someone who owns a Delongi PrimaDonna S Deluxe and a Delonghi La Specialista Arte, i packed up my Automatic machine and it is sitting in my garage. The coffee you get from a manual machine is far superior from that of a fully auto machine. I always found myself wanting a "real" coffee when i went out anywhere, since owning the La Specialista Arte i barely buy from a cafe as i make coffee just as good now.

          • @Snowy83: But isn't it a real coffee? In the YouTube videos the coffee pucks that come out of the machine look the same as coffee pucks from manual machines.

            • @AustriaBargain: Yes they use beans, however are very limited in the size of the shot, extraction times etc so coffee to me while good enough (on par with servo coffee) not as good as coffee can be

              • @Snowy83: What if you get it to deliver to shots, resulting in two pucks? I was planning on getting an auto machine next but maybe I should get a dual boiler instead. I'm not even sure what dual boiler even means, just that it's a good thing.

                • @AustriaBargain: Have a good look on YouTube reviews and how to's and see which one takes your fancy. The fully automatic will be very simple to use and give you ok coffee, but if you want something comparable to Cafe quality coffee then I suggest a manual machine that uses non pressurised baskets.

    • It’s a request from my daughter - she works as a barista in Uni holidays so I assume she knows what she wants.. also I already have the grinder.

    • But you keep posting that you are poor ??

      • I'm poor because I keep buying stuff.

        • Then you are not poor, you are 'materialism'

Dual boiler in its current form looks to be finished. I've been informed be contacts and TGG and HN that the current bes920 is not being sold as a single unit anymore and can only be purchased as the Duo that comes with the Smart Grinder Pro (that may be as this is the only stock remaining). This lines up with other posts for the BDB on ozbargain that there may be a new updated module coming out towards the end of the year. This will most likely increase the cost do to increase features but I could only speculate on the cost but would be surprised if it was in the high end of the $1500 to $2000 mark.

I've been hearing the same thing for years myself, yet it never eventuates.

    • When you say "would be surprised if it was <expensive>" do you mean "would not be surprised if it was <expensive>" ?

      • This is the new 'could care less'.

      • Yes, that is exactly what I meant to say. Sorry for the bad grammar. Recently had a baby and I am very sleep deprived.

  • I was actually in the same situation as the OP. Was looking to change my single boiler Lelit Victoria over to a double boiler machine and for the price, BDB was too hard to pass up (cheaper than my single boiler machine). Just my luck that as soon as I start looking, it's sold out everywhere.
Luckily I found one being sold by WestOz Tools store over in the WA for $999 and ordered it immediately after confirming it's the updated model. Bing Lee said they wont be restocking the BDB either.

    • Did you get this? WestOzTools is a 15 minute drive for me but I can’t seem to get a reply from them.

      • It's been shipped. I'm in Brisbane though so it's going to take some time for it to arrive with the speed of Australia Post. Estimated arrival is this Friday or Monday next week. They only had one in stock when I ordered so I doubt there will be more stock.

    • How do you know when it’s the upgraded model?

  • wait till after Mothers Day over, they jack up prices for special occasions, then they go down

  • Are these low in stock now and how often do deals come around? Wanted to get into coffee but got advised to not jump into anything too expensive like a La Marzocco

  • My BES920 lasted almost 7 years and died early july this year just after the last special. I've been waiting since then for the recurring specials to come around. I guess i'll keep waiting. Please let me know when they are on sale again.

After being out of stock in most major retailers, it has started showing up at 1200 (DJ's) and 1400 (JB Hifi) for limited stock

Expecting it to randomly come down on one of the retailers in the next few weeks

    • I guess this makes you the Oracle!

      • less than two weeks! I guess I must be
