Can I Use Black Round or Aluminium Steel Bars from Bunnings for BBQ Skewers?

I want atleast 24 Inch Skewers for BBQ to use on my Kamado Joe but I am struggling to find ones this big.

The ones that I found have been too expensive and I do not wish to spend a lot of money on these.

I was looking at Round bar 1 or Round bar 2 from Bunnings.

I was going to cut them to size and sharpen the edges and turn them into skewers.

They are non-galvanised so they won't emit any fumes.

But I still want to be sure that they are safe for BBQ use.

Please advise or recommend if you can find an affordable skewers like a Turkish/sheesh Kebab skewers.

Thanks

You want food grade stainless steel

    • Any recommendations? Will a metal fabricator be useful?

    • This! If you can get 316 SS it would be fine

Aluminum I’m not sure if there’s a specific food grade aluminum?

I think your searches would be ‘food grade aluminum’ and ‘food grade steel’ to check for this products. Personally I would just fork out the money for some food grade SS or buy the expensive skewers which you know will be okay

  • Why do you want skewers made out of aluminium?

    • I am not sure. If you guys think its not safe then I wont.

Best not to cheap out on this stuff. Get a good set & it'll last for ages as long as you wash & store them properly.

        • Fair enough. I thought it might be the same.

These actually look really good. I am looking at them now.
65 cm for 11.50 is reasonable I think.

The aluminium would not be strong enough. Plus Al powder is toxic. Not that you're likely to get much powder from this application.
I recommend stainless steel for less hassles.

    • Aluminum powder is also explosive…..

      • Extremely hard to light though.

Could go into the bush and find a twig, using your knee cut it to size. The added extra smoky flavors will come free too.

  • It'll be good to get stainless steel skewers with wooden handles on the end so that you can hold it. Otherwise metal (especially aluminium) conducts heat and it'll be hot to hold.

  • The steel ones will do the job, but will rust and generally be a PITA.
I’ve seen SS rod around the place that would be better - but don’t know a source or price.

Imagine going over to OPs place for a BBQ to find out you've all been poisoned because they just used aluminium/steel from the workshop at bunnings for skewers. yikes.

No idea what you can use, but you need to ensure that it's food grade and generally things that are just sitting on the shelf at bunnings that are made for construction are not considered food grade

These are food grade 304 stainless steel. $40 for 5 pack of the 10mm wide, or $65 for 5 pack of the 25mm wide.
