RAM Update for Dell Gaming Desktop G5 5000

I would like to upgrade my 8G ram to 32G but dell ram are a bit pricey. What are the compatible 3rd parties RAM for dell G5000 corei7. Thanks 🙏

  • I imagine there may be two other issues. Given that the RAM is SODIMM (and not soldered), your laptop may have limitations for the maximum speed that the RAM can run at. This should probably be fine, since it'll just run the RAM at a slower frequency than its full potential. But it may also have limitations for the maximum capacity of RAM it can handle.

Could you give more information as to which Dell G5 model you have?

whoops. Desktop, not a laptop :D

    It is a desktop
    Dell gaming desktop G5000

    • DDR4, yes? If you're not sure, it'll probably say on the RAM stick itself.

  • Yes it’s DDR4

    • What did you need the additional RAM for anyway?
      Oh, gaming.

  • I should’ve bought at least 16g ram
Now I am having frequent crash or freeze during mid gaming 😁

And you're sure that this is because you've run out of RAM?

  • Seems like it whenever crash happens it’s 100% RAM storage and I have to turn off auto save as well

    • You don't need 32GB of RAM to play computer games. You need 32GB of RAM to do serious video/graphics work or to run multiple virtual machine instances.

16 is probably more than enough.

      • 16GB is sufficient but 32GB is future proof.
Prices are pretty good at the moment so it might be worth going 32GB and never having to worry about it again

        • "Future proof" is a mug's game with tech. I've seen this phrase tossed about for decades.

Nine times out of ten, by the time the "future" is here, standards have changed, hardware has become obsolete, bottlenecks have shifted, prices have dropped, and just buying something completely new is probably overdue.

          • @rumblytangara: Yeah, generally I think future proofing is not worthwhile but 32GB of memory is worth considering.
I occasionally find myself using over 16GB while gaming and I don't even have lots of other applications running in the background.

There are at least 3 different models of G5000 i7, with computer parts you really need to be as specific as possible.

Bang the model number into here: https://www.kingston.com/en/configurator

The G5000 will either have 2 or 4 RAM slots. If you want 32 and only have 2 slots, get 2 x 16GB DDR4 DIMMs.

If you have 4 slots, you can get 4x8GB if that's any cheaper. Or probably 2x4GB + 2x8GB for a total of 24GB if you don't want to ditch the existing DIMM.

Go to some RAM manufacturer websites like Crucial and you can put your computer model in and it will show what RAM is compatible with your system.

    • Oh damn. Didn't know those existed :O

  • Thanks everyone
    I just checked Kingston
    32g DDR4 is only 125$
Dell selling around 600$ for 32g

You'd better choose the same brand memory of your current configuration. Some dell gaming desktop(esp. some Alienwares) is poor in compatibilities according to reddit discussion.
I upgraded my alienware by using the exact same model of the current memory, which is Kinston Fury 3200Mhz.

      • I personally would not obsess over brand matching- the probability of this being a problem is very, very low to non-existent.

I've personally installed RAM in literally hundreds of machines, if it's been a problem then it's been so infrequent that I cannot remember.

  • Already ordered 16g for 78$ 😅
If doesn’t work, well a lesson learnt for 78 bucks 😁
