Looking to Buy a $6k Machine from NZ, eBay Seller Told Me I Wont Have to Pay Extra GST. Is This True or Is He Bluffing Me?

I asked:

I was just wondering if I will need to pay extra import fees for this in Australia?

and was told that 'There wouldn't be any additional fees on top of the final checkout price.'

Is this true or not? This seller is 'based' in Homebush, NSW but item is shipped from NZ.

If the seller is based in Homebush, aren't you buying it from Australia? Where they physically ship it from isn't your problem.

    • i suppose you are right. Im just a bit confused as all of their items are based in nz but on the ebay account profile it says they are based in nsw. Do you think I have grounds to argue if there happens to be gst I needed to pay while the item is stuck in customs, for the store to refund me the gst since its them who claimed there would be no fees?

Not your problem. Seller needs to comply with rules.

In the very unlikely event you get asked to pay additional import fees, I would not do so and reject the package completely. It will get sent back to seller and marked as non-delivered.

Paying the fees willingly then expecting a seller to reimburse you without notice will unlikely go down well in your favour.

        • ah thats true. thats for the headsup!

A lot of Chinese drop shippers do that too. Have a front here. No GST collected and ship from China.

      • gotcha cheers for the info

No fees being added to the checkout price doesn't necessarily mean it won't be liable for GST/customs duty/whatever on importation into Australia.

Exactly, it’s shopping from nz to aus. If it’s via mob like DHL they’ll prob get in contact with op to collect gst and duties (unless seller has already collected and built into price but unlikely)?

Also… a 6k machine from nz, not worried about warranty and how go get it back there?

    • Yes, this is the risk. Especially for high value items.

there is a moderate chance it will get pick up by customs and then you will need to pay the import duties which is 10% plus fees. its more like 12% net.

The question you asked doesn’t imply GST.

What kind of machine is it?

I thought GST is only applicable to locals for the country. Ie. Not payable if the product leaves the country.

Is it not like claiming back the GST when you're at the airport to leave the country? TRS?

Ive bougbt a few items from Ebay EU that when it came to final payment, i was pleasantly surprised that it was cheaper than the sale price due to their GST not being applicable. This was before AU GST was included in overseas ebay sales.

  • Do you mean NZ GST?

  • Just be careful in that you can get hit up for import duty (plus escrow/risk fees from the international courier) once your package gets to a certain value - eg over $1k.

Recently had that for some fancy clothes for the wife from Spain which were $1.3k - then had $330 of import duty/courier fees for risk of me not paying import duty)…

  • Just get him to wrap it in wrapping paper and call it a gift. Or say it's a sample. Or pretend he's returning a machine you sent to him.

    $6k 'machine' … so intriguing.

    What is it!???!

  • It sounds like a bad idea buying a PC from overseas.

Even without import duty or GST concerns, you'd need to worry about damage during transit.

Besides, how much of a discount is there over buying locally?

If you're well off enough for a 6K machine, buy locally with reduced specs or the higher price. If you're stretching your budget a risk like this isn't that great an idea, imo.

      It’s a PC ?

      • Assumption based on category. It's probably the VR Sheep.

        • Every Kiwi guy's dream…. VR sheep.

Is there enough money saved buying from NZ to be worth the hassle? How much are you actually saving?
