Great little unit. Way better than any TV speakers.

But if you care at all about bass, get a unit with a separate subwoofer.

      • +8

        Ok.

      • +3

Any: "used to refer to one or some of a thing or number of things, no matter how much or how many."

Most people have tried any TV speakers.

      • +1

you have tried ANY tv speakers! good on you!

        Karen, is that you?

        • -7

Or it could be Daren. Need to be potically correct here.

      • +1

You're not wrong, I reckon this would give the YAS a run for it's money

      • Good one, Dad.

    • +1

Def agree here. Bought one of the older iterations of this soundbar (108b) and the low end was seriously lacking, sold it shortly after. Still, miles better than most built in speakers.
Having said that I think I only paid $120 for it.

    • +1

      Even this tv?

  • +16

I have its predecessor, the YAS108. Solid unit, especially after the latest software update improved the sound immensely. I understand this one is an incremental upgrade, so it would be definitely worth it for someone wanting to ditch their crappy TV speakers. You can attach a separate sub to this for that low end rumble, but it's not necessary for my use.

    • How do you update the software on this one?

That's for this model. You can search for whatever model you want on the Yamaha support page.

Thanks for posting this. I didn't know the firmware is upgradeable. I'm doing it now as I'm typing. If I'm correct my YAS108 was still at 4 and the latest one is 9.

        • +1

No worries. Made a big difference in my sound quality. Also helps if you use the app to control it as it offers easy customisation.

        • +1

same here, thanks man. My 108B is over 3 years old so it would be way behind!

        • +1

I was the same until late last year. I started having weird HDMI issues where my Yamaha soundbar and TV would get themselves into on/off loops (quite funny to watch at first, concerning after the 20th round) so I thought about turfing the soundbar until I figured out that I could upgrade the soundbar's firmware.
Went up like 6 version numbers and the soundbar is now super solid, I cannot recommend upgrading the soundbar firmware enough!!

        • Mine goes up to 11.

    • +1

Thanks for the tip, I went from version 2.0 to 9.0

      • Cool. Hope it makes a difference for you like it did for me.

    • +1

Thank you for this post. I have a YAS-108 in the bedroom and did not know it could be controlled and firmware updated easily through an iPhone - much better than Denon HEOS software.

You have made it so much easier to switch it to music and surround mode for me, cheers.

      • +1

No problem, glad it helped. It's a good app and very stable.

      • can you advise whats the step we use iphone to do the upgrade?

        Thanks in advance!

        • Ah I was supposed to write check firmware version, could not edit as post already replied to.

          • @BlueGlowOne: you mean to use iphone to check the firmware version?

what about update? need a usb cable or something?

    • +1

Yes I have upgraded mine to 9, it’s a blast now. I am very happy with upgrade, now actually planned to buy a subwoofer. Any suggestions under $200.

    • Huh, interesting… My brother bought a 108B a while ago and the audio quality is terrible, never even thought to do a firmware update…

      • Yep. Mine sounded really muddy and was very buggy when I first bought it, was going to return it until I learned about the firmware update. It got a bit better after the first update, but when they brought out v.9, it really improved the sound by a significant margin. Must've just been sent out with rubbish firmware at launch.

    • @TheFunkySalsa Ive Yas108 and im unable to add it in sound bar controller app. Can you explain how to connect and upgrade firmware?

      • You won't need the app to upgrade the FW. Pretty straight forward. Just download, unzip and put the files on a USB stick and then follow the instructions from the above link.

        • Spot on. You can't upgrade firmware via the app, it just shows the firmware number you already have. The website instructions are pretty easy, shouldn't take long to do.

    • -1

      just buy it for them

  • No HDMI ARC?

    • +1

Yes it has it, so does the 108 (I have mine set up this way).

      • Thanks mate!

      • Did you have any trouble setting up hdmi arc with 108? I have tried everything but never got it to work. Only thing i can say now, it was probably faulty since the beginning and out of warranty now.

        • Yes it didn't work the first few times I tried it. A software update to my Sony TV seemed to fix the issue. What's happening with yours? I remember the instructions were super confusing.

          • @TheFunkySalsa: Doesn’t even detect the hdmi signal at all. In the beginning i had a hisense tv so I thought it is probably the tv but now i got a tcl c835 still the same.

            • +1

@GetEmAll: That's weird. Mine detected it but sometimes would randomly lose the signal. You have to have the input set to TV and be connected to the ARC or eARC HDMI port on the TV with the TV set to use ARC. I'm sure you know all that already, it took me a few goes to get them all synced up properly.

      • ARC Support is the only reason I've pulled the trigger on this and let my existing soundbar go. if it doesn't work then it defeats the purpose for me.
        Hopefully it will work.

        • +1

Should work fine as long as it's set up properly and not faulty. My 108 has been working fine for years.

        • I'm annoyed with the fact that package didn't include HDMI cable 🤦🏻‍♂️

For $199, I recently got a Polk Signa S3, including subwoofer, from Costco as a birthday present for my son. The Polk is a better system than this IMO.

    • +2

      oooh interesting. built-in chromecast

But also - how dare you offer alternatives to OzB's only officially endorsed soundbar?!

      • I'm an OzB rebel

        • +5

          Rebel with a Cos

          …tco card

          • +1

            @andresampras: Workin' hard there but worth a +1 :-)

          • @andresampras: Rebel with an iceberg just doesn't sound the part

    • +1

Thanks will consider, but out of stock atm.

was it really for your son? ;)

      • +1

        Indeed it was!

I've got Sonos setups on my two TVs.

  • I have the ATS 1090, is is the same unit?

    • +1

Yeah just in black instead of grey

  • +1

Just bought. Cheers Bois… I had the Edifier D12 sitting under my tv and it's quite ugly but was more for a Bluetooth stereo speaker (is good sound but haven't been using much) this will sound and look better so thought I'd try for my 55" LG tv with white tv cabinet… 👍

  • So I bought the immediate predecessor, I had an older TV and the speakers had died but screen kept working. I like it for what it is, but it's just that, it's a slightly better TV speaker, and when I bought a new TV eventually, it was also slightly better than the new TV's speaker too, so I've kept using it.

It's not the end game thing, what it does do well, is enhance vocal clarity - I can hear and understand people better because it has built in equalisers via an app.

  • +1

    looks cool in grey

  • How is this for music?

  • lol.. I originally thought that this was for a grey import.

  • Does anyone have this for desktop?

    • Too much space for a pc setup IMO.

  • +1

Thanks OP, just purchased for my in-laws. FYI there's a port to add a subwoofer is bass is found to be lacking.

    • Having used for a few days subwoofer is a must imo, can we add any woofer to that port or a specific kind is required?

      • +1

No idea sorry. I tested it for the in-laws the other day. Played with the EQ presets and 'subwoofer' button on the remote and was surprised at how nice the thing sounded. Very happy with the purchase.

  • Thanks OP bought one
