CTEK MXS5.0 Battery Charger 12V 5Amp $99 + $12 Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Repco

740

This popular smart charger is under $100 once again. Highly recommend them!

There is also 30% off the XS0.8 for $69 and MXS7 for $199 but I think the MXS5 is the best value.

Description from website:

CTEK MXS 5.0 - Automatic charger for car batteries
The MXS 5.0 is an advanced battery charger with a microprocessor giving unrivalled performance for charging lead acid car batteries from 1.2Ah to 110Ah. The MXS 5.0 comes with built in automatic temperature compensation ensuring the best charging performance of your car battery, even in the extreme weather conditions Australia throws at it.

The MXS 5.0 has some premium features including a battery diagnosis faction to detect whether your battery can actually receive and retain a charge. A patented function for automatic desulphation, An AGM option which can maximise life and performance of most Stop Start car batteries. Recondition mode for reconditioning and detoxing deeply discharged batteries for greater longevity. Like most CTEK battery chargers, The MXS 5.0 uses the patented float/pulse mode, which is the most efficient maintenance mode especially when a battery is connected up for longer periods including trickle charging your classic/weekend car. CTEK offers battery chargers for car batteries, boat batteries and motorcycle batteries for professionals and consumers.

With the latest advancements in intelligent battery charging technology, CTEK are committed to maximizing battery performance with every product they offer. Constantly pushing the boundaries of research and development, CTEK have soared leaps and bounds above the competition because they constantly innovate, improve, and refine to your needs and battery charging applications. A 12 volt battery charger is an absolute must-have for those storing project cars which only see the road or track once in a blue moon, since batteries naturally discharge over time when left to sit without a charge applied to them, your battery's health is severely compromised if its only given time to charge every so often.

CTEK battery chargers great for restoring charge to totally flat batteries when they would otherwise end up in the tip which means they're friendly to your budget and for the planet. A CTEK car battery charger is also great for maintaining battery charge to occasional vehicles such as project cars, weekend cars, boats, jet-skis, RVs or anything you can think of so you can be sure your car, bike or boat will fire into life at the drop of a hat.

Awesome charger and great price too.

  • +1

Can only charge lead Acid with it?

    • +1

      Does AGM as well

      • Oh yes,t hanks :). Just read the product data sheet on their website. States "All types of 12V lead-acid batteries (WET, MF, Ca/Ca, AGM
and GEL)". Didn't realise those were classed as Lead-acid. Seems like a good charger.

    • +2

I have this $199 KickAss charger (bought it on sale when $149) which can charge up to 22Amp for my camping lithium 100Ah battery as well as my car batteries.
      https://www.kickassproducts.com.au/buy/kickass-12v-22-amp-9-…

      • I'll keep my eye out for specials on this, just added my first LiFePO4 to my array off batteries, this charger looks the goods.

        • Yes the max 22Amp charge can top up the lithium battery fast. 5Amp is considered too low for batteries over 100Ah capacity.

          • @edfoo: The amp rating just affects the charging speed. 5A for a 100Ah battery is fine, as long as you dont need it for a while. If the 100Ah battery is completely flat (0% charge; 100% depth of discharge), it will take over 20 hours to charge.
For AGM the standard charge rate is 0.1C, so for a 100Ah battery the standard charge current is 10A.
            https://workshoppist.com/agm-battery-charging-rates/

            • @Malik Nasser: Yes, it still works but just very slow. And lithium battery prefers higher charge rate than AGM battery if I am not wrong.

              • @edfoo: I'm sure people with high end batteries can afford a bit better charger (or under warranty from the dealer)

                • @G-rig: Not all lithium batteries are considered high-end if you haven't already noted a number of OzBargain deals posted on cheap brands such as VoltX. You can buy a VoltX 100Ah lithium battery for under $400 these days, so I doubt these people want to spend too much on a battery charger.

                  • @edfoo: Yeh all good, just have to get what suits.
                    These are fine for me.

  • Good charger but not good for vehicles with relatively high current draws at the float stage of the cycle.
Lost a couple of AGMs before I released it was a function of the charger.

    • I was going to get one for my AGM but might not now. What exactly ruined the battery?

      • The charger has a "safety" built in that cuts out if it detects too much current draw at the float stage. The charger didn't kill the battery directly, it being left with the cutout tripped for a few weeks did.
I bought a Noco Genius 2-3 years ago and it's been fine since.

    • +1

Why does your car have a high current draw when off? Ive been using this charger on my AGM battery for over 2 years as a trickle charger with no issue

      • It's British…

        • +1

My car had a high current draw when a module had failed which was keeping the car "awake". If your car does it normally then best option would be to just keep the battery disconnected rather than using trickle chargers.

      • common with many chargers they get to a certain voltage and current draw drops then go into trickle and assume battery charged and hold at trickle ……disconnect and reconnect and they go through their cycle again … could be fixed in software but there is a risk if faulty battery that it keeps pushing current to get to charge voltage which never occurs and battery heats up ……

    • +1

I also lost 2 motorcycle AGMs using this charger. Bulged both of them. Now I use them with a timer power-point adaptor and turn them on three times a week for two hours.
      see how that goes.

  • Can this be used as a jump starter

    • +3

      No.

    • +2

You can start the car after charging the car battery with this charger for a few hours, but cannot jump start it immediately.

  • Can this be used to trickle charge a motorbike battery while it is not being ridden over winter?

    • +1

Yes you can leave it connected 24x7. I leave mine connected to my bike while it's not in use.

    • +2

Yep, just pick the motorbike battery mode when you turn it on.

    • Thanks for the replies - much appreciated :)

      • It doesn’t get that cold in Australia. But if you are storing it for winter, remove the battery from the bike and bring it inside.

        • Why not just plug it in to the charger on the bike? As you say, it doesn't get that cold, especially if it's in an enclosed garage.

          • @whitelie: If you don’t disconnect the leads there is still parasitic load on the battery.

Bringing it inside is just easier I guess.

            • @ATangk: The charger is designed to float the voltage so the parasitic loss isn't an issue.

Not sure it's easier… I had the lead with quick release fitting and the eyelets permanently connected to my battery so it was a very quick plug in/out process when I wanted to charge it. Doesn't get easier than that unless there's no power point near your car/bike.

    • +1

I leave my bike plugged into a projecta charger from bunnings. I got sick of roll starting because I use it intermittently. I think it's 0.8 amp. Seems to do the job and was about $60 from memory. A good feature was it comes with a plug you can permanently mount on your battery. I wired it into the rear compartment and whenever I drive in I plug it in.

    • Yes, I use mine all during winter on my jet ski

  • +6

Not that good any more. Old tech (not compatible with lithium) and other manufacturers have caught up.

    • +1

True. I gave mine away, thinking that I don't need it. But when I do need it again, bought a NOCO 10 instead.

Also, if you search "ctek mode button fix", they have design issues, fix is simple but requires to open it up.

    • +1

Could you share what the new tech developments are in the space and what you would get instead?

      Cheers!

  • Love the Ctek's and used many in my time, however does anyone have any experience with the Century CC1212-XLi?

    https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/century-century-cc1212-l…

This one seems to have more modes, a dedicated calcium mode, and lithium…

I know it cost more than the Ctek, but ignoring that would it be a good charger….

  • You will regret buying anything from this brand. Like the above commenter said all old tech. Buy Noco instead.

    • +1

ohhhh interesting…. which Noco do you have?

  • I bought a Gooloo S4 4 Amp charger, when it was on a lightning deal, at $67.99. Might not be the might be the cheapest then, but I didn't want to time my purchase.

    • I got the Gooloo S6 6 Amp charger for $59.99 in June last year. Only used it a couple of times, but seems good.

      • Yes, I wanted the S6 but the S4 is good enough even for my Outlander. Prices weren't going down and even now, they don't have it in stock.

  • Had one that died just under 5 years old. Replaced under warranty…other than that, does the job for lead acid and AGM batteries on the 5-6 cars I've used it on in the past.

  • Excellent charger, highly recommended

  • is there like a portable version of this that could charge/jump start a vehicle? i live in an apartment.

I have a portable jump starter but i read that it's too powerful and may cause short circuit or sth…

    • +1

They are fundamentally different devices. Trickle charger has a transformer inside, jumper starter has a battery inside.

There is no economic benefit to manufacture a 2-in-1 one device that does both things.

If you want to trickle charge "off grid", you will need a portable power station or power generator, both are large, heavy, and expensive.

        • Connect inverter to battery
        • Run charger off inverter
        • Connect charger to battery
          = Off grid charging 😛
      • yep or put small solar panel with a diode in the car … but if you are starting your car even just very few weeks the alternator will bring to full charge …..went overseas for 6 mths, came back and just started my car …. if you have old battery that won’t hold charge replace it …… if you try and start car and voltage drops below operating while it’s updating rolling code on key fob you could loose sync of the key …… even my car owners manual warns of that one .

a great charger is no substitute for a faulty or old battery ……. might get you a start to get to repco, or supercheap for a new one ……

    • You're better off removing the battery when you go away for a while. Maybe add a steering wheel lock and turn the wheel before you disconnect

  • +3

Better off spending an extra $19 for a Gooloo S10 shipped from Amazon AU. The Gooloo is twice as fast @ 10 amps, supports Lithium and has a 12V power supply mode (for powering 12V appliances such as a fridge or pump, or for running you cars electrics off the wall)

    • Is faster better? For my drone lipos it wasn't

      • It’s a smart charger, not a dumb charger. It will only charge at an amperage that is safe for the battery chemistry selected, up to 10 amps max.

        • I don't think it does what you're thinking. The manual says it sends 10 amps, not up to 10 amps. I think it reduces the amps purely on voltage

          • @Davo1111: It does exactly what I said. It’s a 10-stage smart charger that adjusts amperage dependant on which stage and chemistry is selected. Even has a 6V mode at a reduced 2A output. End of the day, any car battery can take a full 10A. How many amps do you think an alternator charges a battery at?

  • I have the 7.0 version as I reckon 5.0 is kinda slow to charge my car. Anyway quality wise it's really good.

  • Still not quite clear what it does? Can someone please help? For example, if I got flat battery and use this charger to charge the flat battery, will the battery be charged and can last another one or two year? In that case, we don't need buy new battery any more? Am I right? Thanks in advance.

    • +2

It depends how far gone your battery is… if you use this charger before the battery goes flat then it should prolong the life of the battery

      • lead acid batteries plates break down when fully flattened and the more that happens the more the plates break down….. if you are constantly having a flat battery it’s faulty and will keep deteriorating ….. rejuvenate modes …. if you have a clear plastic battery you can see build up doesn’t disappear,
if rejunivate modes work, car manufacturers would add to software in car charge system so that batteries last longer under car warranty ….

if battery is old and not holding charge, get a new battery or a cigarette lighter socket voltage meter and see what your battery does when not charging from alternator ….voltage after a drive and charged vs voltage next morning or when you get back from shopping or even if you alternator is reaching full charge voltage …….

      • So if my battery was flat and I jump started and drive 50km, Shouldn't that automatically charge the battery? I did that and next day my battery is flat. Does that mean my battery is gone?

        • Your car has an alternator, which charges the battery whenever the car is on. If you regularly drive your car, it will maintain your batteries state of charge (SoC) at around 100%. Over time your battery will start to break down, so the state of health (SoH) of the battery will go down, and eventually the battery will not be able to hold a charge.
By the sounds of it, either your battery has died, or possibly your alternator could have died.
My bet would be the battery has died (highest probability scenario).
You can get battery testers which also can test your alternator function, if you wanted to do it yourself, or otherwise just take it to your mechanic to check.

    • +1

It's a battery charger. It charges flat batteries, so if your battery went flat, it's designed to charge it. Now, if your battery went flat because it can no longer hold a charge (old battery, battery has been flat for long time), well, it may be damaged. You could use some of the features the charger has to give the battery life, but who knows.

As for the length of time the battery will last if it gets fully charged… who knows. Could be a day, could be 10years.

  • -6

Will this work on my Tesla ?

    • +2

Depends… does your Tesla have a lead acid battery?

      • -3

        How do I check?

      • tesla also have a small separate 12v battery for some of its s systems …..

    • Just charging your main battery is enough as it will charge your 12v.

  • +2

When charging car battery, it's best to leave it connected in the car and charge it directly there.

I made a mistake of taking it out of the car and charge it. When I put it back in the car, somehow it shorts my ECU and I got rough idle as the ECU need to re-learn the timing. Took few mins of driving for the ECU to be back to where it was.

    • I found with my subaru it was best to leave it idling for a few minutes, rather than driving. It would sort itself out much quicker this way.

      • Thanks for sharing… good to know this

        • Yeah leaving it to idle for 10 minutes or so is common for a lot of cars. Came across the same thing with my parents ford, and jumped on YouTube and found that is the best way.

  • Works well for car/bike batteries, but showing its age by NOT doing lithium batteries. Often at this price.

  • Excuse my ignorance but what is the difference between this charger and one of those cheap generic chargers you see on eBay

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/373962965825?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • +1

That eBay one is a very little known brand, so unknown quality. This Ctek brand is well known and good quality. Up to you to decide how to spend your money and the risk you are willing to take.

      • Good quality as in charging the battery properly or good quality as in not breaking down prematurely.

  • +1

Definitely go for something like this over the charger the OP has listed here. Has Bluetooth built in so can get lots of data via phone app, and its Victon. Just quality stuff. Can do lithium.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/133936110116?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • A good alternative.

    • sold my ctek to buy this

    • I have this. Can monitor the charge from your phone rather than mucking around the the led display on the CTEK old tech.

    • +1

Once you gone victron you will never go back….
Use to have CTEK, Victron is king…

  • Seeing the pricing on the site saying $178 each. Deal ended/expired?

  • I can't get the $99 in cart. What's the trick?

  • These dont charge lithium batteries. Just had to sell mine.

    • +1

      What car batteries are lithuim?

      • I was wondering the same thing..
        Maybe Teslas lol

      • Performance cars as it saves weight.

      • High end performance cars usually.

My M3 has lithium for example

      • my motorbike battery is, plus my camp battery. my actual smart charger was $15 more and does everything.

      • Not many but a lot of 4x4 drivers now are running auxiliary lithium batteries for camping.

  • These are good chargers for normal car and bike batteries. got one for about 80$ (eBay plus with a voucher), haven't seen that cheap for a while.

  • As above, has this expired? It’s no where near $99 for me. Come up as $178

    • Not sure what's going on with the link.
It's $99 when you search their catalog sale until 2nd May but when you click on the product, it goes back to full price… May be a pricing error as it seems to have disappeared from their site now.

It was $99 in the search here but doesn't appear anymore.

  • Vheapest i could find for this is $105 through ebay plus. Dont know how G-rig paid $80.
I went to repco and they wouldn't price match.

    • That was from sparesbox eBay May 2021.
      AU $91.67
      Free
      -AU $11.00
      AU $80.67

Good charger, obviously if you have a supercar and battery pay a bit more for extra features, but battery world sell the same ones and recommend them.

  • Ohh you got in 2021,fair enough.
    Dont have a supercar haha.
More for the missus car, shes always draining her battery.
    Thx for replying.

    • All good, it's handy for trickle charging when I don't use the car every day, or if get flat batter. Also got a Subaru and they are a bit hard on those Japanese batteries (can only fit a certain size battery in the bay)

Anyway around $100-120 would still be a good price these days, inflation.

      Cheers.

  • Yes I agree mate with inflation its not a bad price between 100-120.

  • Does anyone know what's the smallest size inverter that will run this reliably ?
I have a couple of 300w Jaycar invertors plus batt and solarpanel to charge 2x100ah deep cycle + other stuff around the house , was just wondering if I'm under charging ,
for some new century 2nds that are struggling to hold a charge after recharging .
