I've had this since February - overall a good watch but still expensive for what it is, even at this price.

Unless you are using it for activity tracking multiple times a week, I don't think it offers much benefit over other smartwatches (speaking as someone who has only owned Garmins and never any other smartwatch so take my opinion with a grain of salt).

The main benefit of Garmins outside of activity tracking is generally battery life, but this just gives me 3 days or so (using a 3rd party watch face, and keeping the charge between 15%-85% instead of waiting for it to die before charging).

It can do a few games - the only one I've spent more than 5 minutes playing is 2048.

    • +3

3 days 😱 I get two weeks+ from my 5X plus. I switched to Garmin from a galaxy 3 explorer or whatever it was due to 1 to 3 days battery not being enough, and was hoping an Epix might be a way back into touchscreen with battery longevity. Guess not. Damn.

      • +2

I guess you've already considered the Fenix 7 series as a way back into touchscreen with battery longevity?

        • I thought the Epix was based off the 7's? Are they comparable once the touch screen gets used?

I recall I had a look at them all a while back but pricing may have been too high for serious consideration. I remember one of the side series, like tactix or epix, may have been an option but again, price. My 5X plus has been awesome, bloody unbreakable, but touch screen makes sense with the extra features.

          • +2

@Rogue01: Yeah Epix and Fenix 7 are pretty much identical, they both have the same touchscreen and software (some cosmetic variations on Epix software because of the higher resolution screen). I had the Fenix 7 for a few weeks before returning it to get the Epix, although in retrospect I'm unsure whether that was the best choice or not.

The biggest differences are the screen type (OLED on Epix, normal garmin screen on Fenix), larger/smaller size options for Fenix, and that some Fenix models have solar and/or flashlight. As the below commenter mentioned though, the OLED screen on the Epix makes up for the lack of flashlight.

But sounds like your 5X is still going strong. Also coming from 5X, the Epix might seem small since you can't get it in the larger size like the Fenix 7X.

            • @Tmonine: Thanks for the info and comparison 😊

    • +5

If you turn off continuous SpO2 you should find that battery life will increase by the better part of three-fold. Epix is basically Fenix 7 with OLED. I get 11 days on a full charge with the 7S. OLED will imply some hit to battery life, but not to the tune of 3 days.

      • I have pulse Ox set to manual check only (I think that's the same as SpO2). I'm pretty sure what's making the battery life low is my habit of charging as soon as it gets to 15-20%, and taking off the charger at 80-90%, essentially meaning I only use about 2/3 of the maximum battery, and also that I have it on always-on mode with a third party watchface instead of a built-in one. And I reckon to be honest it's 3-4 days, not just 3 days, I was being a bit harsh earlier.

        • I get like 12 days on my 6x solar..

          Screen is always on

        • The 20% you're leaving off at each end of the battery bar is a day of battery life each. Source: I own an epix and get 6 days with always on screen + activity tracking

      • Could be because always on display?

    • +2

Unless you are using it for activity tracking multiple times a week, I don't think it offers much benefit over other smartwatches (speaking as someone who has only owned Garmins and never any other smartwatch so take my opinion with a grain of salt).

I've had (too) many smartwatches in the past all the way back to the original Pebble and the Epix 2 is definitely my favourite namely because of the battery life. I typically get 5 days with the always-on display activated before it hits 15% when I recharge it.

For many years I've always told myself one day of battery life is fine because I have to charge my phone anyway, so it's not a big deal to charge it at the same time. That worked fine for regular days but it was a pain when on holiday or camping or if I just forget. Having a watch with 5x the battery life (or "10x" if you consider it can also be used for sleep tracking) is a lot more convenient than I used to think.

The activity tracking works great if you're used to Garmin Connect. You can use the same maps and courses as your handheld and cycling GPSes, everything gets pulled into the same dashboard, etc.

    • +4

I've had my Epix2 for almost a year now, and I still get 16 days of battery life with 15-20km of running a week with GPS on.

See my previous comment on Epix2 and Garmin in general. I still love my watch, and this is the best price I've seen since I paid $1199.20 back in May 2022 (using price match).

    • Thanks for sharing, i am surprise that the battery life sucks so bad! I thought it will be on par with 7x which is nearly a month worth of battery life

      • Thanks for sharing, i am surprise that the battery life sucks so bad!

Do note his followup comment. He only charges it to 80-90% and he considers it flat when it reaches 20%.

I thought it will be on par with 7x which is nearly a month worth of battery life

The 7x is a larger watch so would have better battery life. The Epix 2 is the size of a 7.

      • With how customisable the function of this watches are it is not surprising to see big differences. The epix 2 is rated is 6 days with AOD but that can go down quickly with other changes to settings.

With the same token, I get 4-5 days out of my 7x solar. (I have multiband satellites on for running), which is a 1% drain per KM), and use the torch quite a lot. I run 100km week so I do have to charge sometime late in the week.

Doesn't bother me much, I upgraded from a 5x to be able to run multiband GPS without having to catch every 1-2 days and can get me through 24h events on normal GPS mode.

    • Something is wrong with your watch. I get more than 10 days on mine with a few activities

  • +6

I bought this watch when it was released in early 2022 and absolutely love it. I use it constantly for running, cycling, climbing and hiking. It sync's seamlessly with my chest HRM / speed cadence sensors.
The only thing this watch lacks is the LED torch that is on the Fenix 7X, but the amazing OLED screen more than makes up for it.
    Highly recommended.

I get about 10 days battery with the screen in gesture mode, using it for GPS based training a few times a week.

Only thing I recommend getting is the 3rd Party Puck charger, as the terminals on the cable can be a bit temperamental after a while.
I drop it on the charge for 5-10 minutes a day when I'm having a shower and that keeps it topped up.

    • I quite like this charger. I paid $4.64 delivered.

  • Wonder how it compares with Apple Watch ultra for the same price?

    • +3

Apple Watch = better smart watch
      Garmin = better fitness/health watch

      • Agreed.

Garmin is a sports/activities watch with some smarts thrown in.
Apple is a smart watch with sports/activities thrown in.

  • I initially thought.. $119. Holy.. now this is an ozbargain deal for HoF.

    Oh wait.. damn!

  • See if you can price match it with this retailer - https://www.highlytunedathletes.com.au/products/garmin-epix-… and hopefully get the watch for $995 after the $500 discount

    • The coupon deal reduces 500 from the original price only :(

      • That's a shame :(

Did you try calling JB on 13 52 44 and getting an adjusted price link sent to your phone?

        • Got the price match done via live chat

  • I'm still early days in my research between this and the Fenix 7 - Can anyone share an experience? I'll be using to monitor sleep/cycling/weightlifting and (maybe) running

    • It comes down to whether you want a MIP screen or an OLED screen. The latter will give you a nicer looking watch, the former better battery life.

Have you considered the Fenix 7X? I'm getting 25 days battery life pretty regularly with it, plus the flashlight is amazing and I use it every day.

    • +1

My experience is that I bought a Fenix 7 Solar first, because of the longer battery life over the Epix. At the time I was doing GPS activities a few times a week, and found that I was needing to charge it at least once a week (due to GPS battery use), so I decided I may as well return it and get the Epix if I was going to be charging at least once a week anyway, so I did. The solar on the Fenix made no noticeable difference on battery life whatsoever, and this was during the peak of summer (January).
The advertised daily solar lux count is 50,000 and I think I only managed to get this on one day of the 3 weeks I had the watch. Average was like 20,000 I think. Another thing to consider with the solar watch, living in Australia, is for skin health reasons you don't really want to be exposed to so much direct sunlight anyway.

So I swapped it for the Epix, and when I was doing multiple GPS activites a week it was a huge improvement over the Fenix. But now I've gotten lazier, despite not having the battery drain from lots of GPS activities, the Epix still needs to be charged almost as often (anecdotally) whereas I expect the Fenix would experience much more increase in battery life with the drop in activity level. Your mileage will vary from unique combinations of settings and activity level obviously.

I don't do weightlifting but depending on the size of your wrist, the size of the watch may be an issue if your wrist bends when lifting.

    • I get two weeks between charges with the 7x with 7ish hours of GPS runs a week.

    • As above it comes down to screen vs battery life for the most part. Outside that if your going to use alot of the mapping features you may prefer the AMOLED as it will show more detail vs the mip screen.

      I have a f7 and get 14-18 days with 2-3 runs a week for a comparison to the f7x

If you are in the market for the Epix, also have a look at the newly released Garmin 965. The 965 gives you 90% of the functionality of the Epix but is a few hundred dollars cheaper. You also get a larger screen, lighter watch and UI updates with the 965.

For a full list of the differences, see https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2023/03/garmin-epix-vs-forerunne…

For this price, apple watch ultra is better I guess

    • Very different target audience.

  • +1

The Forerunner 965 just came out, it's $200 cheaper than this deal, has a slightly larger screen (also AMOLED) and is lighter. The Gen 2 is considered more premium, but the 965 would suit majority of people.

The Forerunner 265 is also new and costs $769, which also has an AMOLED screen.

I imagine this is why the Gen 2 is on sale, there is no way people would pay $700 - $1000 more now that the 265 & 965 is out.

    • I agree the 965 would potentially be a better option now as it now has a titanium bezel and also bringing it closer to a Fenix feel. Plus AMOLED screen if that's what you want. It has a slightly larger screen then the 7 in a slightly smaller bezel although the screen almost feels exposed vs recessed on the Fenix 7 so I would be a little nervous if I was a tradie or prone to bumping it.

I got the Fenix 6 Sapphire - Soooo disappointed in the washed-out screen. (see Reply below for more deets)

  • Still way too expensive. Have the Fenix 6X Sapphire that I picked up for half that. Great watch.

    • Yes, mines the Sapphire as well - I mistakingly thought it was the Fenix 6 Pro, as stated in the negged (?!) comment above.

Exactly the look, weight and feel I was after in a sports watch.

I got mine as part of the David Jones 1/2 Price sale - $559.20 I think I paid ?

I have to ask, is your screen washed out at all, or are the colors not vibrant?

I've only compared mine to online photos and box shots etc. and it's definitely 'flat' or 'washed out'. Played around with all of the backlight settings etc, no difference.

I've tried contacting Garmin Support several times via different methods, but they're simply not interested.

      • +1

Hmm never thought that it looked wash out or anything like that to be honest. I do use a custom face so maybe that is why? Great watch for when I go trail riding on the MTB!

      • +1

The marketing photos probably have the backlights on.

      • +2

Were you expecting the transflective screen on the Fenix series to look like an AMOLED screen? Did you do much research prior to purchasing it?

        • You're probably very right, I didn't do enough research - And purchased it online!

My previous watch was an Amazfit T-Rex with AMOLED Screen, so I expected similar, if not better, due to the price alone tbh, and that they were released around the same time.

I do love the watch (Garmin Fenix 6 Sapphire) especially the feel of the watch, colors, Orange strap/Titanium grey body, and its so light.

Just not that impressed with the screen.

          • +2

@GC67: It definitely takes a while to get used to the screen. I remember with my 7X SS the feeling of being underwhelmed when I first took it out of the box. But after a while you don't really notice it, especially outdoors.

          • +2

            @GC67:

Just not that impressed with the screen.

I had a Fenix 6 before the Epix 2. I knew what I was getting into so wasn't disappointed with the screen, but when I saw the screen comparisons with the Epix 2, I decided to switch. I had a string of AMOLED watches before the Fenix 6 so I did miss the vibrant colours, although the long battery life of the Fenix made up for it. The Epix 2 was like the best of both worlds for me.

      • +2

the sapphire makes the screen even more washed out than a non-sapphire one.

that's not to say the non-sapphire is going to blow you away but the colours are definitely more muted with sapphire, due to additional internal reflections

  • What is everyones opinion on the best 3 smartwatches?
If money was no object. Money is an object but I've never owned one so feel like I can lash out for top shelf if it's the best of the best available in April 2023.

    • +1

      Garmin Enduro 2
      Apple Watch Ultra

      • I have 0 complains regarding my Enduro 2. Basically a Fenix 7x with a better battery and case. Around a month of battery depending on use. But expensive.

    • +1

I’m currently waiting for Garmin to roll out ECG across their range before upgrading again, but for now 965 is probably the best all round high end Garmin you can get right now.

  • -2

Will have to come down to around $800 mark to consider a good deal.

  • Bupa members have 20% off through Life Rewards which may be cheaper than those discounts.

    • It would be 20% off RRP, which is highly inflated, and won't be cheaper than this deal.

But $1,200 is still pretty steep for this watch, considering it is only incrementally better than Fenix 6 Sapphire that is regularly available for under $600.

Sure this has touch screen and higher resolution, but they are not premium features, probably adds $10 to the manufacturing cost.

  • Picked up the EPIX Gen 2 this afternoon, had been on the lookout for a Garmin over the past month having been very dissapointed with the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro for Fitness/Activity tracking.

First impressions are amazing. Got a bit overwhelmed with so many Garmin options to choose from but I will say the Build Quality/look of the EPIX is great and very 'premium'. The touchscreen addition is very handy, this does still have buttons so gives you the flexibility for both however even in a short space of time using kept pinching my arm hairs.

Battery life may be a concern for some however having used Samsung devices over past 5 years I am very used to charging daily so if I can get 3/4 days with a lot of features ON it will be fine.

As mentioned above the Forerunner 965 is probably a great choice for a lot of people also, either way damn Garmin make some good watches and wish I had changed sooner!

  • Have one, they're awesome. Not sure about JB's RRP though…been as low as $1200 on CCC and that was last year.

    • Not sure about JB's RRP though…been as low as $1200 on CCC and that was last year.

RRP will always be higher than a sale/offer/deal price.

      • true, but its more like $100 off other recent offers, still not behd price though. Must be a new model coming

  • Owned this watch since https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/693276 ~a year and can't fault it. Coming from the Fenix series, the OLED and resolution is SO much better, especially in direct sunlight. I do turn off the SPo2 per above posts, get around 6 days battery with 4 x 1hr gym session tracking + 1 x 35 minute GPS run and constant alerts from whatsapp.

  • Hi, wondering if anyone has a Bupa code they are not using that they can share. 🙏 pretty please. Thanks
