Hmm, the last time a similar product got posted it wasn't very well received (someone called it cooking wine)…looks to be marketing trickery and fake RRP / discount. Can anyone else speak as to this?

    • I agree, if it's not widely available the price is usually nonsense. The old high RRP from retailer, low RRP through distributor…

    • someone called it cooking wine

      No they didn't!
      (You'd make a terrible Judge!)

"lmao… $1000… this is cooking wine category" ~30min after Deal posted.

That unfounded opinion was not based on tasting, but most likely the 'very low price' ($15 ea) - making it seem like "cooking wine category".
But, almost any wine could fit that category, no matter it's price!

There's no comment on the actual wine.
      Just the dodgie marketing.

Oh look out, Captain Semantics is in town & he's on a mission.

I don’t know this wine, but Sam Kim is reputable and usually a bit of a harder marker than James Halliday.
I wouldn’t let the RRP be the decider.

      • +3

This definitely isn't the case, Sam Kim is known to have much higher rated scores then any other wine reviewer and I would take his scoring with a grain of salt.

        • Correct.

        • Two first names = can't be trusted

  • It's sold at Dan Murphy's marketplace for $1020 per case of 12 But that's fullfilled from a supplier. My guess it's a price error

    • Who made the price error? Dan murphys or boozebud?

      • -1

Someone's made an error if it's also on GWD for even less than this uLtRa PrEmiUm deal.

    • That's the Cab Sauv.

  • +1

Was cheaper here but now sold out @ $14.99 per bottle

    https://www.getwinesdirect.com/red-wines/98-Point-Rated-Back…

    • Thats the Cab Sauv.

      • Why would there be a huge difference between the two in price? Not like it's a totally different process to make.

  • I used bestbud and got an extra 10% off.
Seems like a decent wine for $15 a bottle delivered

    • Why does it seem like a decent wine?

      • The reviews look ok

  • +6

It's a 2021 wine. Calling it a 96pt wine already sounds like bullshittery.

Coonawarra is CabSav country. Not Shiraz optimal. If it'd been McLaren Vale ir Langhorne Creek maybe, just maybe. But the price tells you it's crap. If it was a 96+ rated shiraz let alone a 96pt rated Shiraz it'd be $50+/bottle.

Just goto BWS/Liquorland and sample a bottle of their $10-$15 bottle shiraz.

Wine Orbit is a scam, they're paid reviews and Sam Kim isn't a wine journalist but runs a consulting business for wineries (presumably step one is get a 96 point review from him). If something has less than a 92 from Wine Orbit assume it's pure rocket fuel.

That said, there are some decent shirazs come out of Coonawarra, the Wynn's black label is always a reliable drop and Bin 128 might be overpriced but it's still an excellent drop. IMO it's an underrated region for shiraz.

      • This is pretty much correct. I don't trust SK's reviews at all really.

      • Wynns black label CabSav yes, shiraz, nope. Overpriced.

      • Thanks for the considered & thoughtful explanation, that's what I was getting at, and like most things - especially wine - if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

    • I wouldn't go off price alone, or region alone. I've had many excellent bottles of wine that cost well under $50, and some mediocre bottles that cost above $50. I've had excellent Barossa cab savs, excellent Coonawarra shiraz's, etc. The are may be famous for certain grapes, but it doesn't mean that the area doesn't make excellent grapes of other types.

That being said, this is a case of inflated RRP to make it look better than it is.

Well I agree price certainly doesn't equal quality. But claiming a wine is 96pt and that its sell for $85/bottle but they're selling it for 12 for $185 is complete and utter BS.

Wine makers are always full of BS. There is no way, absolutely no way they're selling a bottle of wine they think is worth $85 for $15.50. oh unless they can't sell it for $85 a bottle and they're still struggling to sell it for $12 a bottle and they'll put the price up and pretend it's a bargain.

        • I agree, although I do believe that you can get a decent bottle of wine at a good discount.

I often do buy discounted wine through Cellar One, or through Bec Hardy.

$85 discounted to $15.50 is a bit bullshit though. Especially if it's internet only and not found anywhere else.

  • Cheerawarra

  • Anyone actually tried this? Seems like GW and a few others have tried flogging this as bargain. Any true OZB reviews noting the pricepoint?

  • What's the go with the ridiculous RRP on wine deals? If this was actually an $80 wine, you'd expect something pretty damn outstanding. And you wouldn't likely be getting it for such a low price. Can they just make up whatever figure they want and call it their RRP? Seems suss…

    • Plenty of online sellers (including Qantas) do this. Makes the deal look way better than it really is.

Honestly sometimes the wines are pretty damn good, although not worth the inflated RRP, but certainly worth the discounted price and then some. You just need to decide for yourself if it's worth the risk. Alot of the time, a $15 "heavily discounted" wine is much better than a $15 quaffer from Liquorland.

      • True, The trick with LL/1stC is look for their E on the pricing label. That means (E)xclusive or homebrand (inside a black diamond). They have price cycles on them.

The Winton Rd & James Busby labels are really good. Their other brands are ok. With 20% CR/SB you get a better wine to try for $14-$16. You don't need to buy a case.

Use BUD3O4H at checkout for another ~$27 off. $13.16 a bottle. Almost worth the risk…

  • Wine State Mag gave it 94 points but listed the bottle RRP of $50.

Kind of hard to navigate to find the snippet in the magazine. I would post a screenshot if I could.
